Chapter 5: The File Hidden Under My Name

I didn’t remember dropping the phone.

I only remembered the sound.

A small crack against the wooden floor.

A sound that felt strangely loud in the silence that followed.

For several seconds, neither Daniel nor I moved.

The words from the call stayed inside my head.

*I’m the reason your mother died.*

My mother had been gone for eight years.

A heart attack.

That was what everyone told me.

That was what I believed.

She was tired.

She was stressed.

She had health problems.

Simple explanations.

Safe explanations.

But now a stranger had just torn them apart with one sentence.

Daniel picked up my phone from the floor.

“Rosa.””

I looked at him.

“She knew my name.””

His expression tightened.

“Many people know your name.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“She knew about the box.””

Daniel glanced at the old wooden container sitting on the table.

“She knew what was inside.””

I wrapped my arms around myself.

The apartment suddenly felt exposed.

Like the walls were made of glass.

“How long has someone been watching me?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Because he didn’t know.

And somehow, that scared me more.

A knock suddenly came from the door.

Both of us froze.

My eyes went toward the entrance.

Nobody should have been there.

Not at that hour.

Daniel quietly moved in front of me.

“Stay back.””

The knock came again.

Three times.

Slow.

Deliberate.

My heart started racing.

Daniel reached for the door handle.

“Don’t,” I whispered.

He looked at me.

“What if it’s her?””

“What if it isn’t?””

For a moment, we stood there.

Then a voice came from outside.

“Rosa?””

I recognized it.

Not the woman from the phone.

Someone else.

Daniel opened the door slightly.

A woman stood in the hallway.

She looked to be in her late fifties.

Gray hair.

Tired eyes.

A face that seemed familiar.

Then she looked past Daniel.

And saw me.

Her expression changed.

“Oh my God.””

I stepped closer.

“Do I know you?””

The woman covered her mouth.

“No.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“But I know your mother.””

The room became silent.

Daniel looked at me.

Then back at the woman.

“Who are you?””

The woman hesitated.

“My name is Clara Bennett.””

The name meant nothing to me.

But the way she looked at me did.

Like she wasn’t seeing me.

Like she was seeing someone who was gone.

“I worked with your mother.””

“Where?””

“At Walker Industries.””

Daniel immediately became alert.

“Walker Industries?””

Clara nodded.

“Yes.””

The same company Daniel had mentioned.

The same company Evelyn had stolen from.

I felt my stomach tighten.

“My mother worked for the Walkers?””

Clara looked down.

“She did.””

“Why didn’t she tell me?””

“Because she was trying to protect you.””

The answer came too quickly.

Too confidently.

I stepped back.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

Clara looked confused.

“What?””

“My whole life, people have been protecting me by keeping secrets.””

My voice became sharper.

“My mother. Evelyn. Whoever called me tonight.””

I looked at Daniel.

“I’m tired of being the last person to know what’s happening.””

Clara nodded slowly.

“You have every right to be angry.””

She reached into her bag.

“I brought this because I knew eventually you would find the box.””

She pulled out a folder.

Old.

Brown.

Worn around the edges.

My name was written across the front.

*ROSA MARTINEZ*

I stared at it.

“How do you have that?””

Clara looked away.

“Your mother gave it to me.””

“When?””

“Three days before she died.””

My breathing stopped.

Three days.

Not years.

Not months.

Three days.

“She knew she was going to die?””

Clara didn’t answer immediately.

“She knew someone was trying to silence her.””

The room felt colder.

Daniel opened the folder.

Inside were documents.

Photographs.

Financial records.

And pages of handwritten notes.

I picked one up.

The handwriting was familiar.

My mother’s.

My hands started shaking.

*If Rosa ever finds this, it means I failed to keep her away from the Walkers.*

I stopped reading.

Daniel noticed.

“What does it say?””

I couldn’t speak.

Clara looked down.

“She wanted you to have a normal life.””

I turned the page.

Another sentence.

*Evelyn Walker is not the person she appears to be.*

My chest tightened.

Daniel took the paper.

“She knew.””

Clara nodded.

“She knew Evelyn was dangerous.””

“How?””

Clara sat down.

“Your mother discovered something at Walker Industries.””

“What?””

“She found financial records showing Evelyn had been moving money through fake accounts.””

Daniel looked at me.

“The same thing I discovered.””

Clara nodded.

“But that wasn’t the worst part.””

Nobody spoke.

“What was?””

Clara looked at the basement documents.

“She discovered Evelyn had been doing it for years.””

Daniel frowned.

“That doesn’t explain why she would target my family.””

Clara looked at him.

“Because Evelyn wasn’t working alone.””

The room went still.

“What?””

Clara took a deep breath.

“There was another person involved.””

“Who?””

Clara looked toward the folder.

“There was a name your mother wrote down.””

I turned the pages quickly.

Near the back, there was a handwritten note.

One name.

A name that made Daniel’s face change.

*Thomas Walker.*

I looked at him.

“Who is Thomas Walker?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

His expression had completely changed.

“Daniel?””

He sat down slowly.

“My father.””

The silence that followed felt impossible.

“But your father died years ago.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

Clara looked between us.

“Everyone thought he did.””

Another impossible sentence.

Another dead person.

I laughed quietly.

Not because it was funny.

Because my brain couldn’t handle one more impossible truth.

“So let me understand.””

I looked at Daniel.

“Your father, who everyone believed was dead, was connected to Evelyn.””

Daniel rubbed his face.

“I thought my father died before Evelyn and I married.””

“Did you ever see his body?””

He froze.

“No.””

The answer came quietly.

I looked at Clara.

“You knew?””

She looked ashamed.

“I suspected.””

“Suspected?””

“My mother was trying to find out the truth when she died.””

I stared at the documents.

A family that buried secrets.

A company built on lies.

A woman who had controlled everyone around her.

And somehow, I had been placed in the center of it.

Then I noticed something.

A page tucked behind the others.

Different from the rest.

Newer.

I pulled it out.

It was a report.

A private investigation report.

The first line made my blood turn cold.

*Subject: Rosa Martinez*

I stopped breathing.

Daniel grabbed the page.

“What?””

I scanned the words.

My childhood.

My school.

My mother.

My address.

Everything.

Someone had been tracking me for years.

At the bottom was a handwritten note.

Not my mother’s.

Not Clara’s.

Someone else’s.

*She has no memory of the connection. Keep her close.*

Daniel looked at me.

“Connection to what?””

I kept reading.

Then I saw the final line.

The one that made every piece fall into place.

*Rosa is Elena Cruz’s daughter.*

My hands went numb.

Clara covered her mouth.

Daniel stared at me.

And suddenly, the old photograph made sense.

My mother wasn’t just a former employee.

She wasn’t just someone who knew the Walkers.

She had been part of their story from the beginning.

The woman on the phone had known.

Evelyn had known.

Everyone had known except me.

Then Daniel’s phone rang.

Unknown number.

Again.

This time, he answered immediately.

“Who is this?””

Silence.

Then a man’s voice.

Older.

Calm.

Familiar.

Daniel’s face turned pale.

“Impossible.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He slowly lowered the phone.

The color had drained from his face.

“Rosa…”

“What?””

He looked at the screen.

Then at the folder.

Then at me.

“The person who just called…”

His voice shook.

“It was my father.””

A second later, the lights in my apartment went out.

May you like

And from somewhere inside the darkness…

someone whispered my name.
