Chapter 9: The Person Behind The Lies

Nobody spoke.

Not because we didn’t have questions.

Because we had too many.

The name Claire had whispered stayed in the air between us.

A name that belonged to someone I had trusted.

Someone I had loved.

Someone I never imagined could be connected to any of this.

My mother.

The woman who raised me.

The woman whose voice I remembered from every birthday.

The woman who sat beside me when I had nightmares.

The woman who told me I was her miracle.

My entire life suddenly felt like a photograph someone had torn in half.

“Say it again.””

My voice sounded unfamiliar.

Claire looked at me with sadness.

“Emily…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I need you to say it.””

Ryan tightened his hand around mine.

Not holding me back.

Holding me together.

Claire took a breath.

“The person who changed the records was your adoptive mother.””

The room spun.

“No.””

The word came out automatically.

Because my heart rejected it before my mind could process it.

“No, she wouldn’t.””

Claire looked down.

“I know what she meant to you.””

“She didn’t just mean something to me.””

My voice cracked.

“She was my mother.””

“I know.””

“She loved me.””

Claire’s eyes filled with tears.

“I believe she did.””

That answer hurt more than a denial.

Because it meant there was something complicated.

Something impossible.

Something I didn’t want to understand.

Margaret suddenly stood.

“You see?””

Everyone looked at her.

She pointed toward me.

“This is what I was trying to uncover.””

Ryan stared at her.

“No.””

His voice was cold.

“You don’t get to pretend you were right.””

“But I was.””

“You attacked my wife.””

“I was trying to stop something worse.””

Ryan stepped closer.

“You don’t know anything.””

Margaret laughed bitterly.

“Don’t I?””

She looked at Claire.

“You know what happened.””

Claire didn’t answer.

Margaret’s expression changed.

“You were there.””

My breath caught.

“You know her?””

Claire looked at Margaret.

“Yes.””

“How?””

Nobody answered.

I felt anger rising.

“No more secrets.””

My voice echoed through the room.

“No more protecting me. No more deciding what I can handle.””

I looked at Claire.

“I want the truth.””

Claire nodded slowly.

“You deserve it.””

She sat down.

And for the first time all day, everyone stopped fighting.

Everyone stopped accusing.

Because the truth was finally arriving.

“Your mother,” Claire began, “was named Laura.””

The name felt strange.

A stranger’s name.

But somehow familiar.

“She was young when she had you.””

“How young?””

“Twenty years old.””

I swallowed.

“What happened?””

Claire looked at the photograph in my hand.

“She loved you more than anything.””

“Then why wasn’t she there?””

Claire’s eyes lowered.

“Because someone convinced her she had no choice.””

My chest tightened.

“Who?””

Claire looked at Margaret.

Then away.

“Your grandfather.””

I froze.

“My grandfather?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Claire hesitated.

“Because of a medical condition that ran in your family.””

I remembered the conversations.

The fears.

The warnings.

The hidden records.

“Someone wanted to erase my family history.””

Claire nodded.

“Your grandfather believed the truth would damage the family name.””

Ryan frowned.

“By changing medical records?””

“Yes.””

“That’s insane.””

Claire looked at him.

“People do dangerous things when they’re afraid of losing control.””

I looked down.

“So my mother knew?””

“Yes.””

“She tried to fix it?””

“She tried to expose it.””

“And that’s why she disappeared?””

Claire’s face changed.

“She didn’t disappear.””

I looked up.

“What?””

“She was forced away.””

The room went quiet.

My hands trembled.

“Who forced her?””

Claire looked at me.

“Your adoptive mother.””

I stopped breathing.

“No.””

“Emily…”

“No.””

I stood up.

“You’re saying she stole me?””

Claire shook her head quickly.

“No.””

“Then explain.””

“She took you because Laura asked her to.””

The words stopped me.

“What?””

Claire continued.

“Your mother was afraid.””

“Of my grandfather?””

“Yes.””

“And my adoptive mother helped her?””

“Yes.””

I felt completely lost.

“Then why hide the truth?””

Claire looked down.

“Because years later, everything changed.””

“What changed?””

“She became afraid.””

“Of what?””

Claire looked at the folder.

“Of losing you.””

A painful silence followed.

Ryan finally spoke.

“So Emily’s mother altered records to hide her identity?””

Claire nodded.

“Yes.””

“Then why did she access Emily’s files now?””

Claire’s face hardened.

“Because she found out about the baby.””

I looked at her.

“What does my baby have to do with this?””

Claire took a deep breath.

“Your daughter may carry the same genetic marker your family has spent years hiding.””

My stomach tightened.

“The condition.””

“Yes.””

I looked at my belly.

“But if it’s hereditary…”

“It doesn’t mean she will be sick.””

Claire reached toward me but stopped herself.

“It means someone became afraid.””

Margaret whispered:

“She thought the baby would expose everything.””

Ryan looked at her.

“Who?””

Margaret didn’t answer.

Claire did.

“Your mother.””

The room went silent again.

I closed my eyes.

The pain was overwhelming.

The betrayal.

The confusion.

The impossible truth.

“She tried to change the records because she wanted to hide my baby’s risk?””

Claire shook her head.

“No.””

I opened my eyes.

“Then why?””

“Because someone else had already changed them.””

I froze.

“What?””

Claire looked at Ryan.

“Your mother discovered that the DNA report was fake.””

Ryan stared.

“But she was the one who accessed the records.””

“No.””

Claire shook her head.

“She was trying to find the person who did.””

I looked at Margaret.

Everything shifted.

Margaret had not been the mastermind.

She had been chasing a lie.

But she had still hurt me.

Still crossed the line.

“Then who created the fake report?””

Nobody answered.

Claire reached into her bag.

She pulled out a small envelope.

“I found this hidden with Laura’s documents.””

She handed it to me.

My name was written on the front.

Not Emily Carter.

My full name.

The one I had never used.

The one from my original birth record.

My hands shook as I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

The handwriting was old.

Familiar.

I had seen it before.

On birthday cards.

On notes left in my lunch.

My mother’s handwriting.

I read the first line.

*Emily, if you are reading this, it means I failed to keep you safe.*

My eyes filled with tears.

I kept reading.

*The person you trust most may be the person who hurts you most, but remember this: fear can make good people do terrible things.*

I looked up.

“Why would she write this?””

Claire’s face was pale.

“Because she knew someone was watching.””

“Who?””

Claire pointed at the letter.

My hands trembled as I continued.

The next sentence made my heart stop.

*Your father is not the person you think he is.*

I looked at Ryan.

Then at Claire.

“What does that mean?””

Claire looked terrified.

“Emily…”

“What?””

She whispered:

“Your biological father is alive.””

The room went completely silent.

And then my phone buzzed.

Everyone looked down.

A message.

From an unknown number.

One sentence.

*Stop looking for the truth, Emily. Your father already found you.*

My blood ran cold.

Because beneath the message was a photograph.

A recent photograph.

Of my house.

Taken from across the street.

And standing in the picture…

May you like

was a man watching my front door.

A man who looked exactly like me.
