Chapter 8: The Missing Birth Record
For twenty-eight years, I had known exactly who I was.
At least, I thought I did.
I had a childhood bedroom filled with old photographs.
A mother who packed my lunches every morning.
A father who taught me how to ride a bike.
A family tree hanging in our hallway with names written carefully in black ink.
Everything had a place.
Everything had an explanation.
Until that moment.
Until a doctor stood in my living room and told me the woman I called my mother might not be the woman who gave birth to me.
My hand moved instinctively to my stomach.
My daughter was still inside me.
The one person in my life who had never lied to me.
At least not yet.
“Emily.””
Ryan’s voice pulled me back.
I looked at him.
His face was filled with worry.
Not suspicion.
Not doubt.
Worry.
“I’m okay.””
But I wasn’t.
I wasn’t even close.
Dr. Whitmore lowered her phone.
“The hospital records department said someone requested your original birth file.””
My throat tightened.
“Using my mother’s name?””
She nodded.
“Yes.””
“Which means?””
Nobody answered.
I already knew.
It meant someone was trying to uncover the same thing I was.
The truth.
Margaret stood near the window, silent.
For the first time since she entered my home, she looked less like someone searching for answers and more like someone afraid of them.
Ryan noticed.
“Mom.””
She didn’t look at him.
“Tell me you didn’t do this.””
Margaret swallowed.
“I didn’t.””
“You accessed her fertility records.””
“I was trying to understand.””
“You hired someone.””
“I was desperate.””
“You tried to get information about her birth records?””
Margaret turned.
“No.””
Her answer came too quickly.
Ryan stared.
“Why did you say no so fast?””
She looked away.
That was enough.
“Mom.””
Margaret sat down slowly.
“I didn’t request the birth records.””
“Then who did?””
She pressed her lips together.
“I don’t know.””
Nobody believed her.
Not because she was always lying.
Because she had spent the entire day proving she was willing to hide things.
Dr. Whitmore looked at me.
“Emily, we need to understand something.””
“What?””
“The request for your birth records came from someone who knew exactly what to ask for.””
“What does that mean?””
“It means they didn’t request a regular copy.””
She opened her notes.
“They requested sealed information.””
My stomach turned.
“Sealed?””
“Yes.””
“Why would my records be sealed?””
Dr. Whitmore hesitated.
“That’s what we need to find out.””
I looked at Daniel.
“You knew about this?””
He shook his head.
“No.””
“But you knew my family history was complicated.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
“Because your biological father asked me to keep certain information private.””
I froze.
“My biological father?””
Daniel nodded.
“You were never supposed to know this way.””
Ryan looked at him.
“Then how was she supposed to know?””
Daniel looked down.
“When she was ready.””
I almost laughed.
Ready.
Everyone kept deciding what I could handle.
My mother.
Margaret.
Doctors.
Everyone.
Except me.
“I’m tired,” I whispered.
Ryan immediately looked at me.
“I know.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I’m tired of people protecting me by lying to me.””
Nobody spoke.
Because they knew I was right.
Ryan stepped closer.
“I’m sorry.””
I looked at him.
“I know you are.””
“I should have listened to you earlier.””
I shook my head.
“This isn’t just about today.””
His expression softened.
“I know.””
Because it wasn’t.
It was about every time I had felt like I needed to hide my fears.
Every time I had convinced myself silence was safer.
A knock interrupted us.
Everyone froze.
Another person at the door.
Ryan immediately moved in front of me.
“Stay here.””
I grabbed his arm.
“Don’t.””
He looked back.
“I need to know who it is.””
He walked to the door.
This time, he didn’t open it immediately.
He checked the window first.
Then unlocked it.
A woman stood outside.
She looked around sixty.
Her face was pale.
Her hands were shaking.
And when she saw me, tears filled her eyes.
“Emily?””
I froze.
Because I knew her.
Not personally.
But I had seen her before.
In photographs.
Old photographs.
My mother’s photo albums.
Ryan looked at me.
“Who is she?””
I couldn’t answer.
The woman stepped inside slowly.
“I’m sorry.””
Her voice broke.
“I should have come years ago.””
My chest tightened.
“Who are you?””
She looked at me.
And whispered:
“My name is Claire.””
The name meant nothing.
Until she added:
“I knew your mother.””
My breathing stopped.
“My mother?””
The woman nodded.
“Your real mother.””
The room went silent.
Nobody moved.
Ryan looked at me.
I felt like I was watching my own life from outside my body.
“No.””
My voice shook.
“No, that’s not possible.””
Claire’s eyes filled with tears.
“I know how it sounds.””
“Who are you?””
She reached into her bag.
Slowly.
Carefully.
She pulled out a photograph.
Then handed it to me.
My fingers trembled as I took it.
The picture was old.
Faded.
A young woman stood in front of a hospital.
She was holding a baby.
A newborn.
Me.
I stared at the image.
My heart pounded.
Because the woman holding me…
was not the woman I grew up calling Mom.
“Why?””
The word came out broken.
“Why would everyone lie?””
Claire wiped her eyes.
“Because they thought they were protecting you.””
I looked at her.
“From what?””
She hesitated.
Then said:
“From what happened to your mother.””
A chill moved through me.
“What happened?””
Claire looked at Margaret.
And Margaret looked away.
That was when I realized.
She knew.
Maybe not everything.
But enough.
Ryan stepped forward.
“Everyone in this room needs to start telling the truth.””
Claire nodded.
“You’re right.””
She looked at me.
“Your birth records were sealed because your mother requested it.””
“Why?””
“Because she was afraid.””
“Of what?””
Claire took a shaky breath.
“Of the people who wanted to find you.””
My heart stopped.
“What people?””
Claire looked at my stomach.
Then back at me.
“Emily, the reason your mother gave you away…”
I felt tears forming.
“Gave me away?””
The words hurt.
Even though I had never known.
Claire nodded sadly.
“She didn’t abandon you.””
“Then what happened?””
“She was trying to save you.””
The room became silent.
Ryan moved closer.
“Save her from who?””
Claire looked at the folder in Dr. Whitmore’s hand.
Then at Margaret.
Then finally at me.
“From a family secret that someone has spent twenty-eight years trying to bury.””
I swallowed.
“What secret?””
Claire’s eyes filled with fear.
“Your mother discovered that someone in your family was changing medical records.””
Everyone went still.
My mind immediately went back to the fake DNA report.
The forged signature.
The missing files.
The altered records.
Claire continued:
“She found out the same person who changed your birth records…”
She paused.
“And who?””
Her voice dropped.
“…was also connected to the false DNA report about your baby.””
The room froze.
Ryan grabbed my hand.
“Who?””
Claire looked toward Margaret.
And Margaret’s face turned completely white.
Because she already knew the answer.
Claire whispered:
“The person who has been controlling this entire situation…”
She looked at Margaret.
“…is not a stranger.””
A terrible silence followed.
Then Claire said the name.
May you like
And my heart stopped.
Because it was someone I had trusted my entire life.
