Chapter 6: The Man At The Door

The voice outside the door changed everything.

Not because it was loud.

Not because it sounded threatening.

Because Margaret knew exactly who it belonged to.

I saw it in her face.

The confidence she had carried all day disappeared.

The woman who had stood in my living room accusing me of secrets was suddenly the one who looked afraid.

Ryan noticed.

He stopped halfway to the door.

“Mom?””

Margaret didn’t answer.

“Who is outside?””

Her lips parted.

Nothing came out.

That was enough.

Ryan’s expression hardened.

“You know him.””

Margaret looked away.

“I can explain.””

The words made my stomach twist.

Because everyone who had lied to me that day had used the same phrase.

I can explain.

Ryan stepped closer.

“No.””

His voice was cold.

“You don’t get to say that anymore.””

The doorbell rang again.

This time, harder.

The man outside didn’t sound patient.

“Margaret, open the door.””

I moved closer to Ryan.

“Who is he?””

“I don’t know,” Ryan said.

But his eyes were still on his mother.

And I knew he was lying.

Not because he knew the man.

Because he knew there was something he didn’t know.

Margaret finally spoke.

“He’s someone from my past.””

Ryan let out a humorless laugh.

“Your past?””

He pointed toward the door.

“Someone from your past is standing outside our house talking about my baby?””

Margaret’s face tightened.

“He shouldn’t be here.””

“Then why is he?””

She looked at the floor.

No answer.

Ryan reached for the door handle.

“Don’t,” Margaret said quickly.

He stopped.

The urgency in her voice was impossible to miss.

Everyone froze.

Ryan slowly turned around.

“Why?””

Margaret swallowed.

“Because you don’t know what you’re opening.””

His eyes narrowed.

“Mom.””

“I’m serious.””

“So am I.””

He opened the door.

A man stood on the porch.

He looked to be in his late fifties.

Gray hair.

Dark jacket.

A folder tucked beneath one arm.

He looked calm.

Too calm.

His eyes moved past Ryan and landed on Margaret.

“You shouldn’t have done this.””

Margaret stepped back.

“You need to leave.””

The man shook his head.

“No.””

Ryan moved into the doorway.

“You need to tell me who you are.””

The man looked at him.

Then at me.

Then at my stomach.

His expression changed slightly.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

And that terrified me.

“Are you Emily Carter?””

My hand instinctively moved over my belly.

“Yes.””

He nodded.

“I’m Daniel Hayes.””

The name meant nothing to me.

But Margaret reacted.

She whispered:

“Daniel.””

Ryan heard.

“You know him.””

Margaret didn’t respond.

Daniel looked at her.

“You told me you could handle this.””

“Not here.””

“Where else?””

Ryan stepped outside slightly.

“Start talking.””

Daniel looked at him.

“I think your mother owes you the truth.””

A bitter smile crossed Ryan’s face.

“Apparently everyone does.””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

Then he handed Ryan the folder.

“I came because I found out what she was planning.””

Margaret’s eyes widened.

“You had no right.””

Ryan opened the folder.

“What is this?””

“Proof.””

“Of what?””

Daniel looked directly at Margaret.

“Of how she got those records.””

My heart started racing.

Ryan flipped through the pages.

The first few were printed emails.

The second was a payment receipt.

Then he stopped.

“What am I looking at?””

Daniel answered.

“Your mother paid someone to access private medical information.””

Margaret immediately shook her head.

“That’s a lie.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You told me you wanted answers.””

“I never told you to do this.””

“You gave me her information.””

The room went silent.

Ryan looked up.

“Her information?””

Daniel nodded.

“Your mother gave me Emily’s full name, birth date, and clinic information.””

My stomach dropped.

Margaret stared at him.

“You’re twisting this.””

“No.””

Daniel’s voice became firm.

“You asked me to find out whether Emily had used donor material.””

Ryan’s face went pale.

The words hit the room like a weapon.

I looked at Margaret.

“You did all this because you thought I cheated?””

She looked at me.

“I thought I was protecting my son.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“You were trying to destroy my marriage.””

“I was trying to find the truth.””

“You keep saying that.””

I stepped forward.

“But you don’t want the truth. You want the version where you’re right.””

Margaret’s face hardened.

“You have no idea what I know.””

Ryan looked at her.

“Then tell me.””

She looked at him.

And for a moment, I saw something like regret.

Then it disappeared.

“I saw the appointment.””

“What appointment?””

“The one at the clinic.””

Ryan looked confused.

“What clinic?””

“The fertility clinic.””

I closed my eyes.

Not again.

Margaret continued.

“I saw Emily meeting with a doctor.””

Ryan looked at me.

“And?””

Margaret looked at him.

“She was discussing another man.””

The words felt like a slap.

Ryan immediately looked at me.

“Emily?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Daniel interrupted.

“That’s not what happened.””

Everyone turned toward him.

Margaret’s face changed.

“Don’t.””

Daniel ignored her.

“I was there.””

My heart raced.

“What?””

Ryan looked at him.

“You were there?””

Daniel nodded.

“I was the person she met.””

The room went silent.

I felt Ryan’s hand move away from mine.

Not completely.

Just slightly.

But I noticed.

Daniel looked at me.

“Emily, I’m sorry.””

I stared at him.

“I don’t understand.””

He took a breath.

“The appointment was about genetic testing.””

“Yes.””

“I was there because…”

He stopped.

Margaret looked terrified.

“Don’t say it.””

Ryan turned sharply.

“Say what?””

Daniel looked at him.

“Because I’m the reason your mother became suspicious.””

My heart pounded.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel opened his folder again.

He pulled out a document.

“I was your wife’s biological father’s doctor.””

The words didn’t make sense.

“What?””

Ryan stared.

“My wife’s biological father?””

Daniel nodded.

“Emily was investigating her family medical history.””

I looked at him.

“That’s impossible.””

“No.””

His voice softened.

“Your parents never told you everything.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

I thought about all the unanswered questions.

All the strange comments from relatives.

All the times my mother changed the subject when I asked about my father.

But this?

This was impossible.

Ryan looked at me.

“You didn’t know?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Daniel continued.

“Emily discovered a possible genetic risk in her family history. She came to the clinic to understand it before having children.””

I looked at Margaret.

“And you turned that into an affair?””

Margaret looked away.

Her silence was an admission.

Ryan’s face hardened.

“You lied.””

“I misunderstood.””

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“You accused my wife of cheating because she was trying to protect our baby’s health.””

Margaret’s eyes filled with tears.

“I was afraid.””

“So you attacked her?””

“I made a mistake.””

I almost laughed.

A mistake.

That was what she called it.

Not assault.

Not betrayal.

A mistake.

Daniel looked at Ryan.

“There’s something else you need to know.””

Ryan looked exhausted.

“What now?””

Daniel hesitated.

“The black liquid your mother brought.””

Everyone became still.

“What about it?”” Ryan asked.

Daniel looked at Margaret.

“Ask her where she got it.””

Ryan turned.

“Mom.””

Margaret didn’t answer.

“Where did you get it?””

Her face went pale.

And for the first time all day…

she looked completely trapped.

“I…”

Ryan stepped closer.

“Where?””

Margaret whispered:

“From someone who told me it would reveal the truth.””

My skin went cold.

“What truth?””

Margaret looked directly at me.

Then at Ryan.

And said:

“The truth about whether Emily’s baby belongs to this family.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Daniel looked down at the folder in his hands.

His expression changed.

Like he had just realized something.

“What?””

Ryan noticed.

“What is it?””

Daniel slowly pulled out one final page.

A laboratory report.

His hands trembled.

“This isn’t about proving who the father is.””

Ryan stared.

“Then what is it about?””

Daniel looked at me.

May you like

And his voice dropped.

“It’s about proving who tried to change your baby’s DNA results before she was even born.””
