Chapter 3: The Call I Never Expected

The phone kept ringing.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Nobody moved.

The sound filled the living room, cutting through the silence like an alarm.

My eyes stayed locked on the screen.

The fertility clinic’s name glowed beneath the incoming call.

A place I hadn’t heard from in months.

A place I never expected to see again.

Ryan noticed.

His face changed.

“Emily.””

I swallowed.

“Don’t.””

His eyebrows pulled together.

“Don’t what?””

“Don’t assume you know what this is.””

Margaret gave a quiet laugh.

“There it is.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“The panic.””

My hands tightened around my phone.

“You don’t know anything.””

“Oh, I know enough.””

Ryan’s voice cut through the room.

“Mom, stop talking.””

For once, Margaret listened.

But the satisfaction on her face remained.

She had already done what she came to do.

She had planted a question.

And now she was waiting for it to grow.

The phone stopped ringing.

The room became quiet again.

Then it started ringing a second time.

Ryan looked at the screen.

“Answer it.””

I stared at him.

“Ryan…”

“Answer it.””

His voice wasn’t angry.

That almost made it worse.

It was hurt.

Like he was afraid of what he might hear.

I pressed the button.

“Hello?””

A woman’s voice came through.

“Hi, is this Emily Carter?””

“Yes.””

“Emily, this is Rachel from North Atlanta Fertility Center.””

I looked at Ryan.

His eyes didn’t leave my face.

“Okay,” I said.

Rachel paused.

“Are you in a place where you can talk privately?””

My heart sank.

Why would she ask that?

I glanced at Margaret.

Then at Ryan.

“No. I’m with my husband.””

There was another pause.

“Oh.””

That single word made my stomach twist.

“What?””

“Emily, I’m calling because we received a request regarding your old patient file.””

My fingers went cold.

“What request?””

“A request for additional information.””

“From who?””

The woman hesitated.

“I’m not sure I’m authorized to discuss that over the phone.””

My eyes immediately moved to Margaret.

She looked away.

Ryan noticed.

“Emily?””

I covered the phone slightly.

“Someone requested information from my file.””

Ryan looked at Margaret.

“Did you?””

Margaret didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

My voice rose.

“Did you contact my fertility clinic?””

Margaret folded her arms.

“I was trying to understand what was happening.””

“You had no right.””

“I had every right to protect my family.””

Ryan stepped forward.

“You don’t get to decide that.””

Margaret looked at him.

“You’re defending her without even knowing the truth.””

Ryan’s expression tightened.

“I’m defending my wife from someone who forced something into her mouth.””

The room went silent.

For a second, Margaret looked smaller.

Then Rachel spoke again through the phone.

“Emily?””

I turned away from them.

“Yes, I’m here.””

“There’s something you should know.””

My chest tightened.

“What?””

“We received a request to release documents connected to your previous treatment.””

“Who requested them?””

“We can’t disclose that without proper authorization.””

“Rachel, please.””

My voice cracked.

“I need to know.””

Another pause.

Then she lowered her voice.

“Emily, the request was unusual.””

My heartbeat quickened.

“Why?””

“Because it referenced information that wasn’t supposed to be shared.””

I looked at Ryan.

“What information?””

Rachel hesitated.

Then said:

“Your donor records.””

The room stopped.

I felt like someone had pulled the floor out from beneath me.

Ryan stared.

“What did she say?””

I ended the call slowly.

I couldn’t breathe.

Ryan stepped closer.

“Emily.””

I looked at him.

“I can explain.””

That was the wrong thing to say.

I knew it the moment the words left my mouth.

Because explanations were what people gave when something was hidden.

Ryan’s face fell.

“You can explain?””

“Ryan, please.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“No, I need you to tell me what’s happening.””

Margaret watched us.

Waiting.

I hated that she was there.

I hated that she was seeing this.

I hated that she had managed to create a moment between me and my husband where I felt like a stranger.

“Before we got married,” I said quietly, “I went to a fertility clinic.””

Ryan stared.

“Why?””

I looked down.

“Because I was scared.””

“Scared of what?””

I took a shaky breath.

“When I was younger, a doctor told me I might have trouble getting pregnant.””

Ryan’s expression changed slightly.

“Emily…”

“I didn’t tell you because I didn’t want our relationship to start with fear.””

He looked hurt.

“You thought I wouldn’t love you if you couldn’t have children?””

“No.””

“Then why hide it?””

“Because I wanted you to choose me.””

The words came out before I could stop them.

Ryan looked away.

And that hurt.

Because I knew that sentence revealed more than I wanted.

Margaret immediately stepped in.

“So you admit you kept secrets.””

I turned toward her.

“Not the way you’re making it sound.””

“Really?””

“Yes.””

“Then explain the donor records.””

Ryan looked at me.

My silence answered before I could.

His face changed.

“Emily.””

I closed my eyes.

There was no way around it anymore.

“I went through treatment.””

“What kind of treatment?””

I swallowed.

“Egg preservation.””

Ryan blinked.

“What?””

“I froze my eggs.””

The room stayed quiet.

For a moment, relief touched me.

Because that was the truth.

The whole truth.

Or almost.

Ryan rubbed his forehead.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I never needed to use them.””

“That’s not the point.””

“I know.””

“No, I don’t think you do.””

His voice cracked slightly.

“You made a decision about something this important without me.””

“I made it before I met you.””

“But you kept it after.””

I had no answer.

Because he was right.

And I hated admitting that.

Margaret suddenly spoke.

“But that’s not all.””

I looked at her.

“Stop.””

She ignored me.

“The clinic records showed something else.””

Ryan turned.

“What else?””

Margaret slowly smiled.

“The pregnancy.””

My blood ran cold.

“What are you talking about?””

She looked at Ryan.

“You should ask your wife why the clinic contacted her months before she got pregnant.””

Ryan turned back to me.

“Emily?””

I felt dizzy.

Because I knew exactly what she was doing.

She was taking pieces of the truth.

Mixing them with lies.

Creating a story where I looked guilty.

“Ryan, listen to me.””

“Was the pregnancy planned?””

My throat tightened.

“Yes.””

“Was there something about it you didn’t tell me?””

I hesitated.

Only for a second.

But it was enough.

Ryan noticed.

And Margaret noticed too.

The front door suddenly opened.

All three of us turned.

A woman stood there.

Older.

Wearing a dark coat.

Holding a folder against her chest.

She looked directly at me.

Then at Ryan.

“I’m sorry,” she said.

“But I had to come in person.””

My heart stopped.

Because I recognized her.

She was the doctor from the fertility clinic.

The doctor who had handled my private records.

The doctor who had promised nobody would ever know.

Ryan looked at me.

“Who is that?””

The woman stepped inside.

Her expression was serious.

“Ryan Carter?””

“Yes.””

She held out the folder.

“My name is Dr. Sarah Whitmore.””

She looked at me.

“Emily never told you the full story because she was protecting you.””

Ryan’s face hardened.

“Protecting me from what?””

Dr. Whitmore opened the folder.

And the first page inside made Margaret step backward.

Because whatever was written there…

was something even she didn’t know.

Dr. Whitmore looked at Ryan and said:

“Your mother was not the only person who accessed Emily’s medical records.””

May you like

She placed the document in his hands.

“The person who requested those files was someone much closer to you.””
