Chapter 4: The Name In The File

The document shook slightly in Ryan’s hand.

Not because he was weak.

Because something inside him had changed.

A few minutes earlier, he had been looking at me like I was the person hiding something.

Now he was looking at that paper like it held the answer to a question he didn’t even know he needed to ask.

Dr. Sarah Whitmore stood near the doorway, her expression careful.

Professional.

But there was something else there too.

Concern.

“Who accessed my wife’s records?”” Ryan asked.

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

The kind of calm that comes right before someone breaks.

Dr. Whitmore looked at Margaret.

Then at Ryan.

“We need to discuss this privately.””

Margaret immediately stepped forward.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

She tightened her grip on her purse.

“I deserve to hear this.””

Ryan turned toward her.

“You lost the right to decide what happens in this house when you held my wife down.””

Margaret flinched.

It was the first time all day she looked like she understood the seriousness of what she had done.

But only for a moment.

Then her expression hardened.

“You’re choosing her over your own mother.””

Ryan stared at her.

“I’m choosing the woman you attacked.””

The silence afterward was painful.

Margaret looked away.

Dr. Whitmore gently cleared her throat.

“Ryan, the information in that file is sensitive.””

He looked down at the folder.

“Then tell me.””

I stepped closer.

“Ryan…”

He looked at me.

The hurt in his eyes almost made me stop.

But I couldn’t let fear control the truth anymore.

“I wanted to tell you.””

“When?””

I froze.

The question wasn’t cruel.

That made it worse.

“When were you going to tell me?””

I swallowed.

“I don’t know.””

His jaw tightened.

“That’s the problem.””

I looked down.

Because he was right.

Not about what Margaret was implying.

Not about some secret betrayal.

But about the fact that I had carried fear alone for too long.

Dr. Whitmore stepped between us slightly.

“Ryan, Emily’s situation is complicated.””

“Complicated?””

“Yes.””

“What does that mean?””

“It means your wife was dealing with information that involved both of you.””

Both of us.

Those words caught my attention.

Ryan noticed too.

“What does that mean?””

Dr. Whitmore opened the folder.

“Before Emily became pregnant, she visited our clinic because she had concerns about her fertility.””

Ryan nodded slowly.

“I know that now.””

“She also asked questions about genetic screening.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“That’s not…”

I stopped.

Because I remembered.

The appointment.

The conversation I had tried to forget.

The one I never expected to matter.

Ryan looked at me.

“What?””

I took a breath.

“Before we got married, I found out my family had a history of a genetic condition.””

Ryan’s expression changed.

“What condition?””

“It wasn’t confirmed. It was only a possibility.””

“And you didn’t tell me?””

“I was going to.””

“When?””

Again, that word.

I hated it because I didn’t have an answer.

Dr. Whitmore looked between us.

“Emily was afraid.””

Ryan laughed softly.

Not because anything was funny.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

His eyes met mine.

“Everyone keeps explaining why things were hidden from me.””

I felt tears burning behind my eyes.

“I didn’t hide it because I didn’t trust you.””

“Then why?””

“Because I loved you.””

The words came out quietly.

“And I was terrified that if I told you something could be wrong with me, you’d start seeing me differently.””

Ryan looked away.

For a second, I thought I saw the pain soften.

Then Dr. Whitmore spoke.

“But that is not why I came here.””

The room became quiet again.

Ryan looked at her.

“Then why are you here?””

She turned the folder around.

“There is a record request attached to Emily’s file.””

She pulled out a page.

“Someone requested access to her fertility records.””

Ryan looked at the page.

“Who?””

Dr. Whitmore pointed to the bottom.

“The authorization information.””

His eyes moved.

Then stopped.

I watched his face.

The color drained from it.

“What?””

He didn’t answer.

“Ryan?””

He looked up slowly.

The paper trembled in his hand.

“No.””

My stomach tightened.

“What does it say?””

He didn’t move.

Dr. Whitmore spoke softly.

“The request was submitted under a family member’s authorization.””

Margaret suddenly looked nervous.

“Wait.””

Everyone turned toward her.

She shook her head.

“I didn’t request anything.””

Ryan looked at her.

“You knew about the records.””

“I found them.””

“How?””

“I told you.””

“No.””

His voice became sharp.

“How did you know where to look?””

Margaret opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

And that was when I realized something.

She wasn’t prepared for this.

She had expected the attention to stay on me.

She had expected Ryan to question me.

Not her.

Dr. Whitmore pointed to the signature.

“Someone used a copy of an old authorization form.””

Ryan stared at the name.

Then whispered:

“No.””

My heart raced.

“What?””

He looked at me.

“I know this signature.””

I felt cold.

“Whose is it?””

Ryan didn’t answer.

He looked at his mother.

“Mom.””

Margaret’s face changed.

Not anger.

Fear.

“Ryan…”

“You signed this?””

The room exploded.

“What?”” I whispered.

Margaret immediately shook her head.

“No.””

“You did.””

“I was trying to help.””

“You accessed my wife’s private medical information.””

“I was protecting you.””

Ryan stepped closer.

“From what?””

Margaret’s voice became desperate.

“From being lied to.””

I stared at her.

“You are unbelievable.””

She turned toward me.

“You think I wanted to hurt you?””

“You attacked me.””

“I was trying to stop you from making a mistake.””

“What mistake?””

Margaret looked at Ryan.

And then she said something that made my entire body freeze.

“She knows the baby isn’t yours.””

Nobody spoke.

Not even Margaret.

Because even she seemed shocked by how far she had gone.

Ryan stared at her.

“What did you just say?””

Margaret’s eyes widened slightly.

Like she realized she had revealed too much.

“I…”

“No.””

Ryan’s voice was quiet.

“Say it again.””

Margaret looked away.

Dr. Whitmore immediately stepped forward.

“That claim is not supported by anything in these records.””

Ryan turned.

“What?””

She looked at him.

“There is no evidence that Emily’s pregnancy is not yours.””

Relief washed through me.

But it didn’t last.

Because Ryan looked back at Margaret.

And now there was something different in his eyes.

Not confusion.

Not doubt.

Betrayal.

“Why would you say that?””

Margaret’s lips trembled.

“I know what I saw.””

“What did you see?””

She stayed silent.

“Mom.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I saw the appointment.””

“What appointment?””

“The one before your wedding.””

My breath caught.

Ryan looked at me.

Then back at her.

“What appointment?””

Margaret looked directly at me.

And whispered:

“The appointment where Emily met the man who donated the genetic material used to create your daughter.””

The room went completely still.

My heart stopped.

Because I knew exactly what she was trying to suggest.

But Ryan didn’t.

And he looked at me like the world had shifted beneath his feet.

“Emily?””

I opened my mouth.

But before I could speak, Dr. Whitmore suddenly looked alarmed.

She grabbed the file from Ryan’s hand.

“No.””

Everyone turned.

“What?”” Ryan asked.

Her eyes scanned the page again.

Then she looked at Margaret.

“You weren’t supposed to have this page.””

Margaret went pale.

“What?””

Dr. Whitmore flipped through the folder quickly.

Then she whispered:

“This isn’t the original file.””

My skin went cold.

“What do you mean?””

She looked at me.

“Someone replaced part of Emily’s medical records.””

Ryan stepped forward.

“Who?””

Dr. Whitmore looked down at the page.

Then at the signature.

And her face changed.

“It wasn’t Margaret.””

A terrible silence filled the room.

“Then who was it?”” Ryan asked.

Dr. Whitmore slowly lifted her eyes.

And said:

“The person who changed these records…”

May you like

She looked directly at Ryan.

“…used your name.””
