Chapter 5: The Forged Signature

“Used your name.””

Dr. Whitmore’s words echoed through the room.

I watched Ryan’s face change.

Confusion first.

Then disbelief.

Then something much darker.

Fear.

“What does that mean?”” he asked.

Dr. Whitmore held the file tightly against her chest.

“It means someone accessed the records using your personal information.””

Ryan shook his head.

“That’s impossible.””

“Why?””

“Because I never requested anything.””

“I believe you.””

His eyes narrowed.

“Then why say my name was used?””

“Because the authorization was connected to your identity.””

I looked at the paper in her hand.

“Can you explain what happened?””

Dr. Whitmore hesitated.

That hesitation scared me.

Doctors were supposed to have answers.

They were supposed to make things feel less terrifying.

But right now, she looked like someone who had just discovered a door was unlocked in a house she thought was secure.

“Someone submitted a request for Emily’s records three months ago,” she said.

Ryan frowned.

“Three months ago?””

“Yes.””

“That’s when Emily was already pregnant.””

I looked at him.

“I didn’t know.””

“I know.””

His response was quiet.

And for some reason, that hurt more.

Because he wasn’t accusing me anymore.

He was realizing I had been carrying something alone.

Dr. Whitmore continued.

“The request was approved because the information matched.””

“What information?””

“Name. Address. Relationship status.””

She looked at Ryan.

“And the authorization signature.””

Ryan ran a hand through his hair.

“But I didn’t sign anything.””

“I know.””

“Then why approve it?””

“Because the signature looked legitimate.””

The room went silent.

Margaret suddenly spoke.

“So someone forged it.””

Everyone looked at her.

For the first time, she wasn’t acting confident.

She looked genuinely afraid.

Ryan stared at his mother.

“You sound surprised.””

“I am.””

“You knew someone accessed the records.””

“I found out about the records.””

“You knew enough to bring them here.””

Margaret’s expression hardened.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“No.””

Ryan shook his head.

“You were trying to control the situation.””

Her face tightened.

“You think she’s innocent?””

Ryan looked at me.

Then back at his mother.

“I think my wife was attacked in my house.””

Margaret’s eyes flashed.

“You don’t understand what she’s done.””

“And you do?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

She opened her mouth.

Then closed it.

That silence told me more than any answer could have.

Ryan noticed too.

“Mom.””

His voice was quieter now.

“What aren’t you telling me?””

Margaret looked away.

“I found the file.””

“No.””

Ryan stepped closer.

“How did you find it?””

“I told you.””

“No, you didn’t.””

His eyes hardened.

“You keep saying you found things. You found the jar. You found the records. You found information you weren’t supposed to have.””

He pointed toward the folder.

“But every time I ask how, you avoid the question.””

Margaret’s face became defensive.

“I was worried about you.””

“Worried enough to break into our home?””

“I had the key.””

“That’s not an excuse.””

She looked at me.

“She has manipulated you.””

I felt my anger rise.

“You are the one who forced me down.””

“I was desperate.””

“Desperate for what?””

Margaret looked at my stomach.

Her voice dropped.

“For the truth.””

Nobody answered.

Because everyone was tired of hearing that word from her.

Truth.

She kept using it like a weapon.

Ryan looked at Dr. Whitmore.

“Can we prove who changed the records?””

Dr. Whitmore nodded slowly.

“Possibly.””

“Possibly?””

“We keep digital access logs.””

My heart started beating faster.

“Can you check?””

“Yes.””

Margaret suddenly stepped forward.

“No.””

Everyone turned.

She froze.

“I mean…”

Ryan stared at her.

“Why not?””

“I just don’t think this needs to become bigger.””

A bitter laugh escaped him.

“Bigger?””

His voice cracked.

“My mother attacked my pregnant wife, brought unknown substances into my home, and accessed private medical records.””

He shook his head.

“I think it’s already bigger.””

Margaret looked at him.

“You would really involve the police?””

Ryan didn’t answer.

But he didn’t have to.

The fear on her face told me she already knew.

Dr. Whitmore took out her phone.

“I’ll contact our records department.””

She stepped into the hallway.

For a few minutes, nobody spoke.

The silence between Ryan and me felt unbearable.

Finally, he said my name.

“Emily.””

I looked at him.

“I’m sorry.””

The words surprised me.

“For what?””

“For believing for even a second that you were hiding something terrible from me.””

Tears filled my eyes.

“I did hide things.””

He looked down.

“I know.””

“I should have told you about the fertility clinic.””

“Yes.””

I swallowed.

“But I never lied about our baby.””

His face softened.

“I know.””

The two words broke something inside me.

Because they were the words I had needed all day.

Not from my doctor.

Not from anyone else.

From him.

Ryan stepped closer.

“I should have protected you.””

I shook my head.

“You came home.””

“I almost didn’t.””

My heart tightened.

“What do you mean?””

He looked away.

“My flight was delayed.””

I frowned.

“Your flight?””

“I was supposed to come home tomorrow.””

“I know.””

“But something felt wrong.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

He hesitated.

“I got a message.””

My stomach tightened.

“From who?””

Ryan reached into his pocket.

He pulled out his phone.

“I thought it was spam.””

He opened the screen.

There was a text message.

No name.

No number saved.

Just a random phone number.

The message was simple.

*Your wife is in danger. Come home now. Don’t tell anyone.*

I looked at Ryan.

“When did you get this?””

“This morning.””

My skin turned cold.

“The same morning Margaret came here?””

He nodded.

“I thought it was a prank.””

“Then why did you come home?””

He looked at me.

“Because they mentioned you.””

A chill moved through me.

“Who sent it?””

“We don’t know.””

Before we could say anything else, Dr. Whitmore returned.

Her expression had changed.

She looked pale.

Ryan immediately noticed.

“What happened?””

She looked at me.

Then at him.

“We checked the access logs.””

“And?””

She swallowed.

“The person who requested the records…”

She paused.

My heart pounded.

“Who?””

Dr. Whitmore looked at Ryan.

“It came from an account connected to your home.””

Ryan frowned.

“My home?””

“Yes.””

“That’s impossible.””

She shook her head.

“No.””

Her voice became softer.

“It’s possible.””

She handed him her phone.

On the screen was a login record.

A username.

A timestamp.

And an email address.

Ryan stared at it.

Then slowly looked up.

Because the email address belonged to someone he knew.

Someone who had been inside our house.

Someone who had been at our wedding.

Someone who had smiled in our family photos.

Ryan whispered:

“This wasn’t my signature.””

He looked at me.

“It was hers.””

I followed his gaze.

Straight to Margaret.

But Margaret wasn’t looking at us.

She was looking at the front door.

Like she was waiting for someone to arrive.

And then the doorbell rang.

Once.

Twice.

Margaret closed her eyes.

Because she knew who was standing outside.

Ryan walked toward the door.

“Who is it?””

Nobody answered.

Then a man’s voice came from the other side.

A voice I had never heard before.

But Margaret clearly recognized.

“Margaret.””

Her face went completely white.

“Open the door.””

May you like

And the stranger added:

“We need to talk about the baby before it’s too late.””
