Chapter 2: The Secret She Was Afraid Of

“You have no idea what your wife has been hiding from you.””

Margaret’s words hung in the room like smoke.

For a moment, I forgot about the bitter taste still coating my tongue.

I forgot the fear.

I forgot the way my body had been shaking.

All I could see was Ryan staring at me.

Not with anger.

Not yet.

But with confusion.

A tiny crack of uncertainty appeared in his eyes.

And that hurt more than anything Margaret had done.

“Emily?”” Ryan said quietly.

I opened my mouth, but no words came out.

Because I knew exactly what Margaret was trying to do.

She wasn’t explaining.

She was redirecting.

She had just forced something into my mouth, and somehow she had found a way to make me the person standing on trial.

“That’s not true,” I finally said.

Margaret crossed her arms.

“Isn’t it?””

“Stop.””

“No, Emily. You should tell him.””

Ryan looked between us.

“Tell me what?””

I pushed myself off the couch carefully.

My legs felt weak.

“Ryan, she’s trying to distract you.””

Margaret gave a small laugh.

“Of course you’d say that.””

Ryan stepped closer to me.

“Emily, what is she talking about?””

I stared at him.

The man who had flown across the country a day early because he wanted to be home before our daughter arrived.

The man who had promised me honesty.

I hated that, even for one second, Margaret had managed to put doubt between us.

“There is nothing,” I said.

“She came here with that jar and tried to make me drink it.””

Margaret shook her head.

“I came here because I know something you don’t.””

Ryan’s jaw tightened.

“Mom, enough.””

“No.””

Her voice sharpened.

“You deserve to know the truth.””

I looked at her.

“The truth about what?””

Margaret smiled faintly.

“The baby.””

My stomach dropped.

Ryan immediately stepped in front of me.

“Watch what you say.””

But Margaret didn’t stop.

“You think everything about this pregnancy has been normal?””

The room became silent.

I felt my heartbeat in my ears.

Ryan looked back at me.

“What is she talking about?””

I shook my head.

“I don’t know.””

And I meant it.

I truly didn’t.

Margaret walked toward the kitchen counter and picked up the jar again.

“You think I brought this because I wanted to hurt her?””

Ryan’s eyes moved to the jar.

“Put it down.””

“I was trying to protect this family.””

“Protect us from what?””

Margaret hesitated.

Just for a second.

But I noticed.

And so did Ryan.

“What?”” he asked.

Her confidence slipped.

“I found something.””

Ryan frowned.

“Found what?””

Margaret looked directly at me.

“A document.””

My chest tightened.

“What document?””

She didn’t answer me.

She answered Ryan.

“Something your wife didn’t want you to see.””

The room felt smaller.

I looked at Ryan.

“Ryan, I have no idea what she’s talking about.””

He studied my face.

I wanted him to know I was telling the truth.

I wanted him to remember every night I had cried because I was scared of becoming a mother.

Every appointment he came to.

Every ultrasound picture we hung on the refrigerator.

But Margaret had planted a seed.

And seeds of doubt grew quickly.

Especially when they came from family.

“Mom,” Ryan said, his voice low, “what document?””

Margaret walked to her purse.

She slowly opened it.

Every movement felt intentional.

Like she was performing.

Then she pulled out a folded piece of paper.

“I found this in the guest room last week.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“What?””

“The guest room?””

“Yes.””

“That’s impossible.””

Margaret looked pleased.

“Why?””

“Because you haven’t been in our house alone.””

A strange expression crossed her face.

“I was.””

My skin turned cold.

“When?””

She didn’t answer.

Ryan looked at her.

“Mom.””

Margaret sighed.

“You gave me the spare key.””

My stomach twisted.

Ryan’s face changed.

“What spare key?””

I looked at him.

“You didn’t give her a key?””

He froze.

A second passed.

Then another.

“I…”

That was all he said.

I felt something inside me break.

Not because of the key.

Because of the silence.

“You knew?””

Ryan immediately shook his head.

“No. Emily, I swear, I didn’t know she still had it.””

Margaret interrupted.

“This isn’t about the key.””

“Yes, it is,” I said.

My voice was shaking.

“You came into our house without telling us.””

“I was checking on things.””

“You were searching through our things.””

Margaret ignored me.

She unfolded the paper.

“Read this.””

Ryan didn’t move.

“Mom.””

“Read it.””

I stared at the paper.

I couldn’t see what was written.

But I already knew.

Whatever it was, Margaret believed it was powerful enough to change everything.

Ryan took it from her hand.

His eyes moved across the page.

At first, nothing happened.

Then his expression changed.

“Where did you get this?””

Margaret smiled.

“I told you.””

“Where?””

“I found it.””

Ryan looked up.

“Answer me.””

For the first time, Margaret looked uncomfortable.

“I told you.””

“No.””

His voice became colder.

“You’re lying.””

I had never heard Ryan speak to his mother like that.

Not once.

Margaret looked away.

And that scared me more than anything.

Ryan looked back at the paper.

“What is this?””

I stepped closer.

“Ryan?””

He didn’t answer.

My heart started racing.

“What does it say?””

He folded the paper slightly.

“Emily…”

The way he said my name made my stomach drop.

“What?””

He looked at me.

Then at my pregnant belly.

Then back at me.

“Is there something you need to tell me?””

I felt like the air had disappeared.

“No.””

“Emily.””

“No.””

Margaret watched us silently.

Enjoying every second.

Ryan ran a hand through his hair.

“I need you to be honest with me.””

“I am being honest.””

“Then explain this.””

He held up the paper.

I finally reached for it.

Ryan hesitated before giving it to me.

I looked down.

And my blood turned cold.

It was a medical document.

My name was printed at the top.

The date was from six months earlier.

And beneath it was a section I had never seen before.

A section that should not have existed.

Because it contained information about my pregnancy that even I didn’t know.

I looked at Margaret.

“What did you do?””

She smiled.

“I didn’t do anything.””

“Then why do you have my medical records?””

Ryan looked at his mother.

His expression hardened.

“Mom.””

Margaret’s face changed.

Not guilt.

Fear.

“You need to understand something.””

“What?””

She pointed at the paper.

“That baby isn’t the only thing your wife has been keeping from you.””

I stared at her.

The contractions that morning suddenly felt like a distant memory.

Because now I wasn’t just afraid of what was inside that jar.

I was afraid of what Margaret had discovered.

Ryan stepped closer.

“Tell me what you’re talking about.””

Margaret looked at me.

Then whispered:

“Ask your wife why she went to a fertility clinic before you two got married.””

The room went completely silent.

Ryan slowly turned toward me.

And for the first time since he walked through the door…

I saw something I had never seen before.

Doubt.

But before I could explain, my phone began ringing.

I looked down.

The caller ID made my entire body freeze.

May you like

It was the fertility clinic.

And they weren’t supposed to call me anymore.
