Chapter 9: The Woman Who Started It All
The woman outside the window didn’t move.
Rain poured over her hair.
Her coat was soaked.
Her face was older than I remembered.
But I knew those eyes.
I knew that voice.
A voice I had spent twelve years trying to forget.
“Mom…”
The word escaped before I could stop it.
Everyone turned toward the window.
Elena covered her mouth.
Marcus whispered:
“No…”
Thomas Whitmore’s expression changed for the first time.
Not anger.
Not confidence.
Fear.
Real fear.
I noticed.
And so did Adrian.
“Father,” Adrian said quietly.
Thomas didn’t answer.
His eyes stayed locked on the woman outside.
Sarah Carter.
My mother.
The woman who was supposed to be dead.
The woman whose name was written at the bottom of my father’s confession.
The woman everyone blamed.
The woman who had been hiding from us for twelve years.
I ran toward the door.
“Ethan, wait!””
Elena grabbed my arm.
But I pulled away.
“I need to know.””
I opened the door.
The cold rain hit my face instantly.
The woman stood only a few feet away.
For a moment, neither of us moved.
I wanted to run to her.
I wanted to scream at her.
I wanted to ask a thousand questions.
Why did you leave me?
Why did you let me believe you were dead?
Why did everyone lie?
But when she looked at me…
I saw something I never expected.
Shame.
“Ethan.””
Her voice broke.
I stepped back.
“How?””
Tears filled her eyes.
“I can explain.””
“No.””
My voice shook.
“No, you don’t get to say that.””
She flinched.
“You disappeared.””
“I know.””
“You let me bury you.””
“I know.””
“You let me believe my parents were gone.””
Her face collapsed.
“I know.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Everyone knows.””
Behind me, the others watched.
Even Thomas.
Even Adrian.
Everyone waiting for answers.
I pointed toward the house.
“Did you know?””
Sarah looked inside.
At Thomas.
Then at me.
“Yes.””
My heart sank.
“You knew he was alive?””
“Yes.””
“You knew Adrian was my brother?””
“Yes.””
“You knew Elena was trapped?””
Her eyes filled with pain.
“No.””
That answer stopped me.
“You didn’t?””
“No.””
She stepped closer.
“I knew Adrian was dangerous. I knew Thomas was alive. But I didn’t know what he did to Elena.””
I searched her face.
Trying to find the lie.
But I couldn’t.
Because she looked broken.
Not powerful.
Not manipulative.
Broken.
“Then tell me the truth.””
She nodded.
“I will.””
Thomas finally spoke.
“Sarah.””
His voice was cold.
“You should have stayed hidden.””
She looked at him.
“I spent twelve years hiding because of you.””
The rain fell harder.
“You took my son.””
I froze.
Sarah looked at me.
“I didn’t abandon you.””
Her voice cracked.
“I saved you.””
Thomas laughed.
“That’s what you tell yourself?””
Sarah ignored him.
“Your father’s confession wasn’t what you think.””
I turned.
“The letter?””
She nodded.
“Daniel wrote it, but Thomas forced him to.””
Everyone froze.
Marcus stepped forward.
“What?””
Sarah looked at him.
“You never knew?””
Marcus shook his head.
“No.””
Thomas’s face hardened.
Sarah continued.
“Daniel was investigating Thomas. He found out about Adrian. He found out about Ethan.””
She looked at me.
“And he found out Thomas planned to use you.””
I remembered Thomas’s words.
I needed an heir.
“You knew I was his son.””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because Thomas would have taken you.””
I looked at Thomas.
“Is that true?””
He didn’t answer.
Sarah continued.
“He believed you were his second chance.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Second chance?””
She nodded.
“Thomas had spent his entire life building an empire. But he knew Adrian was unstable.””
Adrian looked away.
Sarah continued.
“He wanted someone else to inherit everything.””
Me.
I felt sick.
“I wasn’t a person to him.””
“No.””
She looked at Thomas.
“You were a replacement.””
Thomas smiled.
“And yet you stole him from me.””
Sarah’s face hardened.
“Yes.””
The room went silent.
Finally, someone admitted it.
My mother had taken me.
Not abandoned me.
Taken me.
I looked at her.
“Why?””
She stepped closer.
“Because Thomas had already destroyed one family.””
She pointed at Adrian.
“He turned him into something terrible.””
Adrian looked down.
“And I knew if I left you with him, you would become another version of him.””
I shook my head.
“So you let Daniel raise me?””
“Yes.””
“Without telling him the truth?””
Sarah closed her eyes.
“That was my mistake.””
The admission surprised me.
She continued.
“Daniel found out later.””
Marcus looked at her.
“How?””
“Thomas told him.””
I looked at Thomas.
“Why?””
A smile appeared on his face.
“Because Daniel was getting too comfortable.””
Sarah continued.
“Thomas wanted Daniel afraid.””
She looked at me.
“He wanted him to know that if he exposed the truth, Ethan would lose everything.””
Marcus shook his head.
“So Daniel wrote the confession.””
“Yes.””
“But why blame Sarah?””
Sarah looked down.
“Because Thomas needed Ethan to hate the right person.””
I felt the weight of those words.
For twelve years, I had mourned my parents.
Then hated the wrong person.
Then trusted the wrong people.
Everything had been carefully arranged.
But one question remained.
I looked at Sarah.
“Where were you?””
Her face changed.
The question hurt her.
“I was running.””
“From Thomas?””
“Yes.””
“Why not come back?””
She looked at me.
“Because every time I tried, someone disappeared.””
A silence followed.
She looked at Marcus.
“The doctor.””
Marcus froze.
“What?””
“Dr. Samuel Reed.””
The man who tried to save Elena.
Sarah continued.
“He found me.””
“What happened?””
“He told me he had proof against Thomas.””
Marcus whispered:
“And then he died.””
Sarah nodded.
“He wasn’t the first.””
My stomach turned.
“How many?””
She looked at Thomas.
“Too many.””
Thomas stepped forward.
“Enough.””
For the first time, his voice sounded desperate.
Not powerful.
Desperate.
“You always loved making yourself the victim.””
Sarah looked at him.
“You murdered Daniel.””
Thomas said nothing.
“You destroyed Elena.””
Nothing.
“You manipulated Adrian.””
Adrian looked at him.
“You used me.””
Thomas stared at him.
“Yes.””
The honesty shocked everyone.
Adrian’s face changed.
Thomas looked at me.
“And I used you too.””
The words were almost peaceful.
Like he was finally admitting something obvious.
I stepped forward.
“Why?””
Thomas looked at me.
“Because you were the only person who could open the vault.””
Marcus frowned.
“The vault?””
Thomas smiled.
“The Whitmore family vault.””
Everything clicked.
The blood requirement.
The evidence.
The key.
It wasn’t about inheritance.
It was about access.
“What’s inside?””
Thomas smiled.
“The truth.””
Adrian suddenly moved.
Everyone turned.
He walked toward Thomas.
“You never intended to give me anything.””
Thomas looked at him.
“No.””
Adrian laughed quietly.
“All these years…”
His voice cracked.
“You really saw me as nothing.””
Thomas didn’t respond.
Then Adrian did something nobody expected.
He grabbed Thomas’s folder.
Thomas reacted immediately.
They struggled.
The folder fell.
Papers scattered across the floor.
One document landed near my feet.
I picked it up.
And froze.
It was a transfer agreement.
A legal document.
Dated twelve years ago.
The day my parents died.
At the bottom was a signature.
Not Thomas.
Not Adrian.
Not my father.
Sarah.
My mother.
The title read:
*Guardianship Transfer Agreement.*
My hands shook.
Because I saw the name of the person who signed it.
Not Daniel.
Not Thomas.
Me.
Or rather…
A child’s fingerprint.
My fingerprint.
Sarah stepped closer.
“Ethan…”
I looked up.
“What did you do?””
Her face went pale.
“I was trying to protect you.””
The document revealed the truth.
My mother hadn’t just hidden me from Thomas.
She had legally erased my identity.
Changed my name.
Changed my history.
Changed my entire life.
And at the bottom of the page was one final sentence.
A sentence that made my blood run cold.
*“In the event of my death, the child will inherit control of the Whitmore empire.””*
I stared.
I wasn’t just Thomas’s son.
I wasn’t just Adrian’s brother.
I was the legal owner of everything they had spent their lives fighting over.
Then my phone rang.
The same unknown number.
I answered.
A man’s voice came through.
Calm.
Familiar.
“Ethan Carter?””
I looked around.
Everyone was watching me.
“Who is this?””
The voice replied:
“The person who has the final piece of evidence.””
A pause.
“And the person who knows who really killed your parents.””
My heart stopped.
“Who?””
The answer came quietly.
“Your sister.””
I looked at Elena.
She went completely pale.
And for the first time since she came back from the dead…
She looked afraid of me.
May you like
