Chapter 5: The Son They Tried To Erase
Darkness swallowed the hallway.
For a moment, nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Then Elena whispered the only word that mattered.
“No…”
The fear in her voice was different this time.
Not the fear of Adrian.
Not the fear of being trapped.
This was something deeper.
A memory coming back to life.
The emergency lights flickered once.
Then again.
And when the hallway finally glowed red, Thomas Whitmore was still standing there.
Alive.
Older than the photographs.
But unmistakably the same man.
The man who was supposed to have been buried twelve years ago.
I stared at him.
My mind refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.
“You died.””
Thomas smiled.
A slow, cold smile.
“That’s what everyone was told.””
My fists clenched.
“You faked your death?””
“Not exactly.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“Then explain.””
Thomas looked at him with amusement.
“Still asking questions, Marcus?””
The lawyer’s face hardened.
“You knew.””
“Of course I knew.””
Thomas walked closer.
“You always knew there was more to this family.””
Marcus shook his head.
“No. I knew you were dangerous.””
Thomas laughed softly.
“And yet you still worked for us.””
The words hit Marcus.
Because they were true.
For years, Marcus had been part of the Whitmore machine.
A lawyer protecting their empire.
A man who only discovered the truth when it was too late.
I stepped between them.
“Enough.””
Thomas looked at me.
For the first time, his expression changed.
Not fear.
Not anger.
Recognition.
Like he was looking at something he had been waiting years to see.
“Ethan Carter.””
The way he said my name made my skin crawl.
“You have your father’s eyes.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“My father hated you.””
Thomas smiled.
“Your father misunderstood me.””
“He died because of you.””
A quiet pause.
Then Thomas sighed.
“Your father was a brilliant man.””
The fake sympathy made my blood boil.
“Don’t talk about him.””
“He was loyal.””
“He was murdered.””
Thomas looked away.
“And that was unfortunate.””
I took a step forward.
“Unfortunate?””
Elena grabbed my arm.
“Ethan.””
But I couldn’t stop.
“You destroyed my family.””
Thomas looked back at me.
“No.””
His voice became colder.
“I protected my family.””
The hallway fell silent.
I stared at him.
“What does that mean?””
Thomas didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, he looked at Elena.
“You told him everything?””
She shook her head.
“Not enough.””
Thomas smiled.
“Of course not.””
He looked back at me.
“Because she doesn’t know everything either.””
Elena’s face changed.
“What are you talking about?””
Thomas ignored her.
“Your father discovered something twelve years ago.””
Marcus spoke quietly.
“The foundation accounts.””
Thomas nodded.
“Yes.””
“The stolen money.””
“Yes.””
“The blackmail files.””
“Yes.””
I looked between them.
“What does any of this have to do with me?””
Thomas stepped closer.
“Everything.””
He pointed at the photograph on the wall.
The one showing him with my father and young Adrian.
“You were never supposed to find this.””
I looked at the picture again.
The little boy beside my father.
Adrian.
Not a Whitmore.
Not by blood.
Then what was he?
Thomas followed my eyes.
“Adrian was abandoned.””
Elena stared at him.
“What?””
“He was six years old when I found him.””
Thomas’s expression became unreadable.
“His real parents were involved with people who wanted my company destroyed.””
Marcus frowned.
“You adopted him?””
Thomas smiled.
“I saved him.””
I shook my head.
“You raised a monster.””
Thomas looked at me.
“Monsters are created.””
He paused.
“They are not born.””
The words hung in the air.
For a moment, I almost felt something.
Almost.
Then I remembered Elena inside a coffin.
I remembered prison.
I remembered three years stolen from my life.
“Where is Adrian?””
Thomas’s eyes darkened.
“That depends.””
“On what?””
“On whether you want the truth.””
I laughed.
“I’ve spent three years chasing the truth.””
Thomas nodded.
“And look where it brought you.””
He reached into his coat.
Marcus immediately moved.
“Don’t.””
Thomas ignored him.
He pulled out a small metal key.
Old.
Rusty.
Then he placed it on the table beside us.
“This belonged to your father.””
My breath caught.
“No.””
Thomas watched me carefully.
“Daniel Carter left something behind.””
“What?””
“A message.””
“For who?””
Thomas looked directly at me.
“For his son.””
The hallway felt colder.
“My father never mentioned anything.””
“Because he didn’t know if you were ready.””
I shook my head.
“You’re lying.””
Thomas smiled.
“That’s what Adrian said about me.””
Elena stepped forward.
“Why are you doing this?””
Thomas looked at her.
“Because I’m tired.””
She froze.
“Tired of cleaning up Adrian’s mistakes.””
My eyes narrowed.
“You and Adrian aren’t working together?””
Thomas laughed.
“Adrian thinks he controls me.””
Marcus looked shocked.
“But he’s your son.””
Thomas’s expression turned empty.
“No.””
The word was quiet.
But powerful.
“He is my creation.””
Nobody spoke.
Thomas continued.
“I gave him power. I gave him a name. I gave him everything.””
His eyes hardened.
“And he became arrogant enough to think he could take my empire from me.””
Elena whispered:
“So the funeral…”
“Was his plan.””
Thomas looked at her.
“He wanted to erase you.””
My hands tightened.
“Why?””
“Because Elena discovered the same thing your father discovered.””
I looked at my sister.
“What?””
Thomas answered.
“She found proof that Adrian was planning to destroy the Whitmore company and blame it on me.””
Elena looked stunned.
“That’s why he locked me away?””
“Yes.””
Thomas nodded.
“He needed time.””
Marcus looked confused.
“Then why bury her?””
Thomas’s face became serious.
“Because Adrian needed everyone to believe Elena was dead.””
“Why?””
Thomas looked at me.
“Because Elena wasn’t his only problem.””
A silence followed.
Then he said:
“You were.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
Thomas walked closer.
“Adrian knew your father left something behind.””
“What?””
“A final piece of evidence.””
“Where?””
Thomas pointed at me.
“Inside you.””
I stared at him.
“What does that mean?””
Thomas’s voice lowered.
“Your father didn’t trust anyone.””
He looked toward Marcus.
“Not lawyers.””
Then toward Elena.
“Not even family.””
Then back at me.
“But he trusted his son.””
I shook my head.
“My father died when I was sixteen.””
“Yes.””
“He didn’t leave me anything.””
Thomas smiled.
“You think you would remember everything that happened to you?””
A strange feeling moved through me.
A memory.
A forgotten moment.
My father sitting beside my bed.
The night before the accident.
He had given me a small wooden box.
I was young.
Scared.
He told me:
“Ethan, if anything happens to me, promise me you won’t open this until someone tries to take it from you.””
I had forgotten.
Completely.
Because after he died, the box disappeared.
I looked at Thomas.
“You have it.””
“No.””
“Then who does?””
Thomas didn’t answer.
Because before he could…
A gunshot exploded through the hallway.
Everyone dropped.
The bullet struck the wall inches from Thomas’s head.
Chaos erupted.
Elena screamed.
Marcus pulled her down.
I turned toward the sound.
At the end of the hallway stood Adrian.
Alive.
Holding a gun.
His face was no longer calm.
No more fake tears.
No more billionaire smile.
Only rage.
“You always were good at ruining my plans, Father.””
Thomas looked at him.
“You were never my son.””
Adrian smiled.
“Neither was Ethan.””
The entire world stopped.
I looked at him.
“What did you say?””
Adrian stepped forward.
The gun remained pointed at Thomas.
Then at me.
“You really want to know why Thomas kept you alive?””
My heart pounded.
“Because you’re not Daniel Carter’s son.””
Elena went pale.
“Adrian, stop.””
But he continued.
“You’re mine.””
Nobody moved.
The words didn’t make sense.
They couldn’t.
I stared at him.
“No.””
Adrian smiled.
“The blood test is in the box your father hid.””
He lowered the gun slightly.
“And when you find it, Ethan…”
A pause.
“You’ll finally understand why your own father tried to erase you from history.””
The lights flickered.
Then the hallway doors burst open.
Police rushed inside.
And in the confusion, Adrian disappeared again.
Leaving behind only one thing.
The old metal key.
And the impossible question that destroyed everything I believed.
May you like
Was Adrian Whitmore lying?
Or was I really the son of the man who ruined my family?
