Chapter 3: The Night Everything Changed

The sound of the chapel doors locking echoed louder than any scream.

Click.

Click.

Click.

One by one, every exit sealed shut.

The guests who remained inside turned toward the doors in panic.

“What’s happening?””

“Open the doors!””

“Who locked us in?””

Nobody answered.

Nobody had to.

Everyone’s eyes moved toward Adrian Whitmore.

He stood near the broken coffin, calm and composed.

Almost relieved.

That was the moment I understood something.

He wasn’t trapped with us.

He had planned this.

My hand tightened around the photographs.

“You did this.””

Adrian tilted his head.

“Did what?””

“Locked everyone inside.””

A faint smile appeared on his face.

“Ethan, after everything you’ve done today, are you really going to accuse me of creating chaos?””

“You’re scared.””

His smile disappeared.

“No.””

He looked at Elena.

“I’m finally in control.””

My sister flinched.

That one reaction told me everything.

She wasn’t just afraid of him.

She knew him.

She knew exactly what he was capable of.

I stepped closer to her.

“Elena.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Ethan…”

“Tell me the truth.””

She looked away.

“Please.””

My voice cracked.

“I spent three years thinking I failed you.””

She closed her eyes.

“I know.””

“I thought you were dead.””

“I know.””

“I went to prison because I tried to save you.””

Her face twisted with pain.

“I know.””

I stared at her.

“Then why are you protecting him?””

She looked back at me.

And the answer broke my heart.

“Because I’m the reason you went to prison.””

The room went silent.

Even Adrian looked satisfied.

The words didn’t make sense.

Not at first.

My brain rejected them.

“No.””

Elena started crying.

“Ethan…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You were the person I was trying to protect.””

She reached toward me.

I stepped back.

That hurt her.

I saw it.

But I couldn’t stop.

“Tell me you didn’t mean that.””

She whispered:

“I did.””

The chapel felt colder.

Three years disappeared in one second.

I remembered the night everything fell apart.

The night the police came to the Whitmore mansion.

The night they found Adrian injured.

The night I was arrested.

I remembered Elena standing there.

Silent.

Terrified.

And when the police asked what happened…

She said nothing.

Nothing.

Her silence destroyed me.

“I don’t understand,” I said.

Elena wiped her tears.

“Because I was trying to save your life.””

I laughed.

A broken laugh.

“You had a strange way of showing it.””

She looked at Adrian.

Then back at me.

“The night you were arrested, Adrian wasn’t the victim.””

My eyes narrowed.

“What?””

“He wasn’t attacked.””

Everyone listened.

Adrian’s expression changed.

Only slightly.

But Marcus noticed.

“So you’re finally telling him.””

Adrian glared at him.

“Stay out of this.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“No. You stayed quiet for three years. Now everyone hears the truth.””

Elena took a deep breath.

“The night Ethan came to the mansion, he wasn’t there to hurt Adrian.””

She looked at me.

“He came because I called him.””

My heart stopped.

“You called me?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I found out what Adrian was doing.””

The room became completely still.

Elena looked at her husband.

“Adrian had been moving money through fake charities. Millions of dollars.””

Adrian laughed.

“That’s your explanation?””

“No.””

Elena’s voice became stronger.

“It’s only the beginning.””

She looked at the crowd.

“Adrian wasn’t just stealing money.””

A pause.

“He was collecting secrets.””

Nobody moved.

“He used his company to gather information on politicians, businessmen, and powerful people. He threatened anyone who tried to expose him.””

Marcus nodded.

“I found evidence.””

Adrian looked at him.

“And you buried it.””

Marcus looked down.

“Yes.””

My anger shifted.

“What?””

Marcus swallowed.

“I found the documents before Ethan was arrested.””

I stared at him.

“Then why didn’t you use them?””

“Because Adrian threatened my family.””

A cold silence followed.

Marcus’s voice became quieter.

“He sent me pictures of my daughter leaving school. Pictures of my wife walking home. He told me he could reach anyone.””

He looked at me.

“I was afraid.””

I wanted to be angry.

I was angry.

But I also saw the shame on his face.

The same shame I had carried for three years.

Elena continued.

“I discovered everything by accident.””

She looked toward the coffin.

“I was going to leave him.””

Adrian smiled.

“You were going to leave me?””

“Yes.””

“And you thought your brother could save you?””

Elena’s face hardened.

“I knew he would try.””

I looked at her.

“Then why did you let them arrest me?””

Her eyes filled with tears again.

“Because Adrian gave me a choice.””

My stomach dropped.

“What choice?””

She looked at the floor.

“He told me if I protected him, he would let you live.””

A painful silence followed.

“He said if I exposed him, you would disappear.””

I stared at her.

“He threatened me because of you?””

“Yes.””

“And you believed him?””

She looked devastated.

“He had already proven he could destroy people.””

Marcus nodded.

“He had connections everywhere.””

I looked at Adrian.

“So you framed me.””

Adrian didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

I stepped closer.

“You staged the entire thing.””

Adrian smiled.

“You were angry. You had a history of confronting me. Everyone believed it.””

My fists clenched.

“You made me look insane.””

“You helped.””

The words hit harder than I expected.

Adrian walked around the coffin slowly.

“You were emotional. Reckless. Loud.””

He looked at the guests.

“People don’t believe angry men.””

My jaw tightened.

“But they believe rich men.””

His smile faded.

“Yes.””

The honesty was worse.

Before I could respond, Elena suddenly grabbed my arm.

“Ethan.””

I looked at her.

“There’s something else.””

Her voice trembled.

“What?””

She looked terrified.

“The reason Adrian announced my death.””

I waited.

“Because he realized I escaped.””

I frowned.

“Escaped?””

She nodded.

“I wasn’t unconscious for three years.””

A chill moved through me.

“What do you mean?””

“I was awake.””

The entire room went silent.

Elena looked at the coffin.

“They kept me hidden.””

My breathing stopped.

“Where?””

Her eyes moved toward Adrian.

“In the basement of the Whitmore estate.””

A wave of horror moved through the chapel.

Someone gasped.

Adrian’s face finally cracked.

“You should have stayed quiet.””

Elena looked at him.

“I did for three years.””

Her voice shook.

“But then you made one mistake.””

Adrian stared at her.

“What mistake?””

She looked at me.

“You buried me before checking if I was still alive.””

The room erupted.

People shouted.

The locked doors rattled.

Then suddenly—

The lights went out.

Complete darkness.

Someone screamed.

A second later, emergency lights flickered on.

But Adrian was no longer standing near the coffin.

He was gone.

And on the floor beside where he had been standing was a single piece of paper.

Marcus picked it up.

His face changed as he read it.

“What does it say?”” I asked.

He looked at me.

Then slowly handed it over.

Three words were written in black ink.

*“Ask your father.””*

My blood ran cold.

Because my father had been dead for twelve years.

And beneath those words was a signature.

May you like

A name I never expected to see again.

*Thomas Whitmore.*
