Chapter 4: The Man Who Was Supposed To Be Dead
The name on the paper burned into my mind.
*Thomas Whitmore.*
My fingers tightened around the note.
No.
That wasn’t possible.
Thomas Whitmore had been dead for twelve years.
He was Adrian’s father.
The founder of the Whitmore empire.
The man whose face appeared on buildings, charity plaques, and business magazines.
The man who supposedly died peacefully in his sleep.
The man who attended my parents’ funeral and shook my hand when I was sixteen.
The man who told me, “A family protects its own.””
Now his name was written on a piece of paper inside a locked chapel.
And somehow, it was connected to everything.
Marcus watched my face carefully.
“You know that name.””
I looked up.
“Everyone knows that name.””
“No.””
His voice was quiet.
“You know something you haven’t told us.””
I stared at him.
“I met him.””
Elena’s expression changed.
“You did?””
I nodded slowly.
“Years ago.””
The memory came back like a photograph I didn’t want to see.
My parents had died in a car accident when I was young. After that, Elena and I had no one except each other.
Thomas Whitmore had been one of the people who helped with the funeral arrangements.
At least, that’s what everyone believed.
I remembered him standing outside the church in a black suit.
A powerful man surrounded by assistants.
He looked at me and Elena like we were broken things he could buy.
“You children don’t have to worry anymore,” he told us.
Elena had cried.
I hadn’t.
Even back then, something about him felt wrong.
Not cruel.
Not obviously.
Just empty.
Like he was pretending to be human.
I looked at the note again.
“Why would Adrian write this?””
Marcus shook his head.
“He didn’t.””
“What?””
Marcus pointed at the handwriting.
“Look closer.””
I studied the ink.
The letters were old-fashioned.
Careful.
Almost elegant.
“This isn’t Adrian’s handwriting.””
Elena looked toward the chapel entrance.
“Then who wrote it?””
Nobody answered.
Because everyone already knew the terrifying possibility.
The person who wrote it might still be alive.
A loud pounding came from the locked doors.
“Open this door!””
Security.
The guests began shouting again.
Marcus walked toward the doors.
“They’re coming.””
I stopped him.
“No.””
He turned.
“What?””
“If Adrian escaped, he wanted us distracted.””
Marcus looked at me.
I continued.
“He left this message because he wants us to chase something.””
Elena nodded weakly.
“Adrian always planned three steps ahead.””
I looked at her.
“You know him too well.””
She lowered her eyes.
“I had to.””
That answer hurt.
But before I could say anything, Elena suddenly grabbed the edge of the coffin.
Her body shook.
I caught her.
“Easy.””
She looked at me.
“There’s another thing you need to know.””
My heart sank.
“Every time someone says that, my life gets worse.””
A small, sad smile appeared on her face.
“I know.””
She looked at Marcus.
“Tell him.””
Marcus hesitated.
“Are you sure?””
“Yes.””
“What is it?”” I asked.
Marcus took a breath.
“Thomas Whitmore wasn’t just Adrian’s father.””
I waited.
“He was your father’s business partner.””
The room became silent.
I stared at him.
“My father?””
Marcus nodded.
“Your father worked with Thomas before he died.””
“That’s impossible.””
“No.””
Marcus looked at the documents from the envelope.
“It’s the reason your parents died.””
The words hit me like a physical blow.
I stepped back.
“What did you say?””
Elena reached for me.
“Ethan…”
“No.””
I looked at Marcus.
“Don’t.””
His face showed regret.
“Your father discovered something.””
“What?””
“A hidden account.””
I laughed bitterly.
“This is insane.””
“It’s the truth.””
“My father was an accountant.””
“Yes.””
“And Thomas Whitmore was a billionaire.””
“Yes.””
“So why would they work together?””
Marcus looked at Elena.
“Because your father wasn’t just an accountant.””
I felt the room spinning.
“What was he?””
Marcus opened another document.
A photocopy of an old contract.
At the bottom were two signatures.
One belonged to Thomas Whitmore.
The other belonged to my father.
*Daniel Carter.*
My father.
Dead for twelve years.
The document title was visible.
*WHITMORE FOUNDATION INTERNAL INVESTIGATION.*
I read the first line.
Then the second.
Then I stopped.
Because I understood.
My father had been investigating Thomas Whitmore.
And someone wanted him gone.
I looked at Elena.
“Did you know?””
She cried silently.
“Yes.””
The answer destroyed something inside me.
“You knew?””
“I found out after I started investigating Adrian.””
“And you never told me?””
“I tried.””
“When?””
“The night you were arrested.””
I froze.
“What?””
Elena looked at the floor.
“Before the police arrived, I tried to explain everything.””
My memory flashed back.
The mansion.
The broken glass.
Adrian bleeding on the floor.
Elena standing in the hallway.
I remembered yelling.
I remembered asking her what happened.
I remembered her opening her mouth.
Then stopping.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Her voice cracked.
“Because Adrian was listening.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“He had cameras everywhere.””
Marcus nodded.
“He controlled every room in that house.””
Elena looked at me.
“When you arrived, Adrian already knew.””
My stomach turned.
“He wanted me there.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because he knew you would fight.””
The anger returned.
“He used me.””
Elena nodded.
“Yes.””
The pounding on the doors grew louder.
“We need to leave,” Marcus said.
I looked at him.
“How?””
Marcus looked toward the side hallway.
“There’s another exit.””
“You knew?””
He hesitated.
“Yes.””
I stared at him.
“You knew this chapel had a hidden exit?””
Marcus looked away.
“I designed Adrian’s legal documents for years. I know the Whitmore estate better than most people.””
The three of us moved through the side passage behind the chapel wall.
The hallway smelled like dust and old wood.
As we walked, I noticed something strange.
Pictures lined the walls.
Generations of Whitmores.
Business victories.
Family celebrations.
Then I saw one photograph.
I stopped.
“Elena.””
She turned.
I pointed.
The picture showed Thomas Whitmore standing beside Adrian.
And beside them…
My father.
Daniel Carter.
But there was something else.
Something that made my blood freeze.
A little boy stood beside my father.
A child around six years old.
The caption underneath read:
*“Thomas and Daniel with their sons.””*
I stared.
My voice barely worked.
“My father had another son?””
Marcus went pale.
“No.””
Elena looked at the picture.
Then at me.
“Ethan…”
The hallway suddenly felt too small.
The little boy in the picture wasn’t standing beside my father.
He was standing beside Thomas.
And I recognized his face.
Older.
Changed.
But unmistakable.
Because I had seen him every day in newspapers.
On television.
At the center of the Whitmore empire.
Adrian Whitmore.
I stepped away from the photograph.
“That’s not possible.””
Marcus whispered:
“It is.””
My hands shook.
“Adrian isn’t Thomas’s biological son?””
Marcus looked at me.
“No.””
The hidden hallway lights flickered.
A cold breeze moved through the corridor.
Then a voice came from the darkness behind us.
“You’re finally figuring it out.””
We turned.
A man stood at the end of the hallway.
Older.
Gray hair.
A scar across his face.
But alive.
Very alive.
Elena covered her mouth.
Marcus stopped breathing.
I stared.
Because I knew that face.
I had seen it in old photographs.
I had seen it on the news twelve years ago.
The man everyone said was dead.
Thomas Whitmore smiled.
“Hello, Ethan.””
My entire body went cold.
“Your father had a lot of secrets.””
He took one step closer.
“But he never discovered my biggest one.””
The hallway went silent.
Thomas looked at Elena.
Then at Marcus.
Then back at me.
“The truth about who you really are.””
And before I could answer, the lights went out again.
