Chapter 8: The Heir Nobody Wanted
The birth certificate shook in Thomas Whitmore’s hand.
Not because he was afraid.
Because he enjoyed watching me break.
That was the thing I finally understood about him.
Thomas didn’t just hide secrets.
He collected them.
He kept people trapped inside the truth while he stood outside, deciding when they were allowed to know.
And now he had decided it was my turn.
I stepped toward the doorway.
“Give me that.””
Thomas smiled.
“Still giving orders.””
“You don’t get to walk into my childhood home and rewrite my life.””
He looked around the old house.
“This house was built on a lie.””
My jaw tightened.
“No.””
He looked at the walls.
“Your father knew.””
“Daniel was my father.””
Thomas’s expression hardened.
“Daniel was a good man.””
The answer surprised me.
Almost.
“But he was weak.””
I felt anger rise in my chest.
“Don’t talk about him.””
Thomas ignored me.
“He loved your mother enough to raise another man’s child.””
Elena stepped beside me.
“Stop.””
Thomas looked at her.
“You have no right to defend him.””
“No.””
Her voice shook.
“But I have every right to hate you.””
For the first time, Thomas looked annoyed.
Not angry.
Not hurt.
Annoyed.
Like Elena was a problem he hadn’t expected.
“You should have died quietly.””
The words froze the room.
I stared at him.
“You really said that.””
Thomas didn’t deny it.
“She was a complication.””
Elena’s face went pale.
“A complication?””
“Yes.””
His voice was cold.
“Adrian was becoming impatient. You knew too much. Ethan was getting too close.””
I stepped forward.
“You used your own son to bury your daughter-in-law alive.””
Thomas looked at me.
“No.””
A pause.
“I used my son because he was predictable.””
The words were worse than any confession.
Adrian.
The billionaire.
The perfect husband.
The man everyone admired.
He wasn’t Thomas’s partner.
He was his weapon.
But then something else clicked.
“Wait.””
Everyone looked at me.
I stared at Thomas.
“You said Adrian was becoming impatient.””
Thomas said nothing.
“You weren’t working together.””
“No.””
“You were fighting.””
A faint smile appeared.
“Finally.””
I felt the pieces moving.
Adrian didn’t fake his fear in the chapel.
He was afraid.
Not of the police.
Not of me.
Of Thomas.
“He was trying to take your empire.””
Thomas’s expression changed.
“Yes.””
“And Elena found out.””
“Yes.””
“And she knew enough to destroy both of you.””
“Yes.””
I looked at Elena.
She nodded slowly.
“I found documents showing Adrian planned to expose Thomas.””
Marcus frowned.
“But why would Adrian expose him?””
Thomas answered.
“Because he believed the company belonged to him.””
He laughed quietly.
“Adrian always thought being my son meant inheriting everything.””
I looked at him.
“But he isn’t.””
Thomas’s eyes moved to me.
“No.””
The silence that followed was heavy.
Because everyone understood.
The truth Adrian revealed wasn’t just a weapon.
It was a threat.
I was the person Thomas had been hiding.
The real heir.
The person who could destroy everything.
“Why?””
The question came out quietly.
Thomas looked at me.
“Why what?””
“Why keep me alive?””
For the first time, he didn’t answer immediately.
That scared me more.
Finally, he said:
“Because you were valuable.””
I felt disgust.
“I’m your son.””
“Yes.””
“And that’s all I was?””
Thomas’s face remained emotionless.
“Blood creates responsibility.””
“That’s not an answer.””
“It is.””
He stepped closer.
“I needed an heir.””
I laughed.
A painful laugh.
“You needed a replacement.””
“Yes.””
The honesty was almost unbelievable.
Thomas continued.
“Adrian was intelligent. Ambitious. Capable.””
A pause.
“But he was damaged.””
He looked at me.
“You were different.””
I shook my head.
“You don’t know me.””
“I know more than you think.””
He pointed toward the house.
“Daniel kept records.””
My expression changed.
“The box.””
Thomas nodded.
“Your father spent years documenting everything.””
Marcus looked at the folder.
“The evidence.””
“Yes.””
Thomas smiled.
“He believed the truth would save Ethan.””
He looked at me.
“He was wrong.””
I stepped forward.
“Why?””
“Because truth destroys people before it frees them.””
Before I could answer, a car engine sounded outside.
Everyone turned.
Another vehicle stopped in front of the house.
A door opened.
Then footsteps.
Slow.
Controlled.
Adrian walked into the yard.
Alive.
Again.
But this time he wasn’t holding a weapon.
He looked exhausted.
Like a man who had finally lost everything.
Thomas stared at him.
“You came.””
Adrian looked at me.
Not Thomas.
Me.
“I knew you would tell him eventually.””
Thomas smiled.
“You’re disappointed?””
“No.””
Adrian’s voice was quiet.
“I’m relieved.””
Nobody expected that.
Especially me.
I stared at him.
“You tried to kill my sister.””
Adrian looked down.
“I know.””
The answer was so simple that it shocked me.
No excuse.
No lie.
Just guilt.
Elena stepped forward.
“Why?””
Adrian looked at her.
His face broke slightly.
“Because I thought if you were gone, everything would stop.””
“Everything?””
“My father.””
Thomas’s expression changed.
Adrian laughed bitterly.
“You really think I wanted to become you?””
Thomas said nothing.
“I spent my whole life trying to prove I was worthy.””
Adrian looked at me.
“And then I found out you existed.””
I felt anger.
“So you decided to destroy me.””
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“I decided to destroy the person who had the one thing I never had.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Adrian looked at Thomas.
“His approval.””
The room went silent.
Even Thomas looked uncomfortable.
Adrian continued.
“He never saw me as his son.””
He looked at me.
“He saw me as a project.””
I remembered Thomas saying the same thing.
Adrian was his creation.
Not his child.
“I thought if I took the company, if I became powerful enough, he would finally respect me.””
A sad smile appeared.
“But then he told me the truth.””
I waited.
“He told me about you.””
Thomas watched silently.
“He told me Daniel Carter raised his real son.””
Adrian looked at me.
“And I realized I spent my entire life fighting for something that was never mine.””
Elena’s expression softened.
But mine didn’t.
Because pain didn’t erase what he did.
“You still hurt people.””
Adrian nodded.
“I know.””
“You trapped Elena.””
“Yes.””
“You let me go to prison.””
“Yes.””
“You almost killed her.””
His eyes closed.
“Yes.””
Silence.
Then Adrian said something I never expected.
“I’m sorry.””
The words meant nothing.
Not yet.
Maybe not ever.
But they were the first honest words I had heard from him.
Thomas suddenly laughed.
A quiet, cruel laugh.
“This is pathetic.””
Everyone turned.
“You two are exactly alike.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“You both think guilt makes you different from me.””
He looked at Adrian.
“You failed because you cared.””
Then at me.
“And you failed because you loved people who weren’t your blood.””
His eyes moved to the metal box.
“But neither of you understand the final secret.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“What final secret?””
Thomas smiled.
“The evidence Daniel hid.””
My stomach tightened.
“What about it?””
“It doesn’t just expose me.””
A pause.
“It exposes Ethan.””
I froze.
“What?””
Thomas reached into his folder.
Pulled out another document.
And threw it toward me.
I caught it.
The page was old.
The handwriting was Daniel’s.
My father.
At the top were words that made my heart stop.
*CONFESSION OF DANIEL CARTER*
I read the first line.
*I have lied to Ethan his entire life.*
My hands trembled.
I looked at Thomas.
“What is this?””
Thomas smiled.
“The truth.””
I looked back at the paper.
The next sentence was worse.
*Ethan was never abandoned by Thomas Whitmore.*
My breath caught.
*I was the one who took him.*
The room went silent.
I couldn’t move.
Daniel.
My father.
The man who protected me.
The man I loved.
The man I trusted.
The letter continued.
*I stole Thomas’s son because I knew what he would become.*
I looked up slowly.
Thomas was watching me.
Not with anger.
With satisfaction.
Because this was the secret he had protected all these years.
Not that I was his son.
Something much worse.
I looked at Daniel’s handwriting.
The final line on the page was visible.
*If Ethan ever learns the truth, he must know one thing…*
My fingers went numb.
I read the words.
*Thomas Whitmore was not the person who destroyed our family.*
A cold feeling moved through me.
Then I turned the page.
And saw the name written at the bottom.
The person my father blamed.
The person who started everything.
The person none of us had suspected.
*Sarah Carter.*
My mother.
Alive or dead, she had been hiding something.
And Daniel had spent twelve years making sure I never found out.
I looked at Elena.
At Marcus.
At Adrian.
Nobody had an answer.
Then my phone vibrated.
A number I didn’t recognize.
I answered.
A woman’s voice whispered through the speaker.
A voice I had not heard since childhood.
“Ethan…”
My entire body froze.
Because I knew that voice.
It was impossible.
“Mom?””
A long silence.
Then:
“Don’t trust anyone in that house.””
The call ended.
And outside the window…
A woman was standing in the rain.
Watching us.
Alive.
