Chapter 6: The Box Beneath The House
The police arrived too late.
Of course they did.
That was how the Whitmore family survived.
They were never early enough to stop the crime.
Only early enough to clean up the evidence.
Within minutes, the chapel was filled with officers, medical workers, and investigators asking questions nobody could answer.
A billionaire’s funeral had turned into a crime scene.
A supposedly dead woman had been found alive.
A dead man had walked out of history.
And the man everyone believed was responsible had escaped.
Again.
But I barely heard any of it.
I stood in the middle of the chaos, staring at the metal key in my hand.
The same key Thomas Whitmore claimed belonged to my father.
The same key Adrian said would reveal the truth about me.
My entire life had just become a lie.
I looked at Elena.
She was sitting on a chair while paramedics checked her condition.
She looked exhausted.
Broken.
But alive.
That was the only thing keeping me from falling apart.
I walked toward her.
She looked up.
“Ethan…”
I held up the key.
“Did you know?””
Her eyes moved to it.
Then away.
That was enough.
My chest tightened.
“You knew something.””
“No.””
“Elena.””
She closed her eyes.
“I knew your father left something behind.””
I froze.
“You knew?””
“I didn’t know what.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
She swallowed.
“Because I promised him.””
The words hit harder than I expected.
“My father?””
She nodded.
“The night before he died.””
The room around us disappeared.
“What did he say?””
Elena looked down at her hands.
“He came to my room.””
A tear rolled down her cheek.
“He was scared.””
My father.
The man who always seemed impossible to break.
Scared.
“He told me that if anything happened to him, I needed to protect you.””
I stared at her.
“Protect me from what?””
She whispered:
“The Whitmores.””
My jaw tightened.
“And you still married Adrian.””
Pain crossed her face.
“I didn’t know who he really was.””
“You knew enough.””
“Yes.””
Her voice broke.
“I knew enough to be afraid.””
Before I could respond, Marcus approached us.
“We need to leave.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
He glanced around the chapel.
“Because this place isn’t safe anymore.””
I almost laughed.
“Safe?””
I looked at the broken coffin.
“My sister was buried alive.””
Marcus nodded.
“I know.””
“And Adrian escaped.””
“I know.””
“Thomas Whitmore appeared from nowhere.””
“I know.””
I stepped closer.
“Then tell me one thing.””
Marcus waited.
“Is Adrian telling the truth?””
Silence.
That silence hurt more than any answer.
Finally, Marcus spoke.
“I don’t know.””
My stomach dropped.
“You’re my lawyer.””
“I was.””
The honesty surprised me.
“I failed you once because I thought I could control the situation.””
He looked at Elena.
“I won’t make that mistake again.””
A police officer approached us.
“Mr. Carter.””
I turned.
“Yes?””
“You need to come with us and give a statement.””
I looked around.
At the officers.
At the cameras.
At the reporters gathering outside.
Everyone wanted answers.
But I had none.
Only questions.
“I need one hour.””
The officer frowned.
“You escaped prison today.””
“I know.””
“You’re technically a fugitive.””
“I know.””
He studied me.
Then looked at Elena.
At the woman who had just come back from the dead.
Finally, he sighed.
“One hour.””
I nodded.
Then I turned to Marcus.
“Where does this key go?””
His face changed.
Because he knew.
“The Carter house.””
I stopped.
“My old house?””
Marcus nodded.
“Your father’s house.””
I hadn’t been there in twelve years.
Not since the night after the funeral.
The place had been sold shortly afterward.
Or so I thought.
“You’re saying something is still there?””
Marcus looked at the key.
“Yes.””
“How do you know?””
He hesitated.
“Because I helped hide it.””
The drive to my childhood home was almost silent.
Elena sat beside me in the back seat.
Marcus sat in front.
Nobody spoke.
Because everyone was afraid of what we might find.
The Carter house was located outside the city.
A small place.
Nothing like the Whitmore mansion.
No marble floors.
No security gates.
No servants.
Just old wooden walls and memories.
When we arrived, the house looked abandoned.
The grass was overgrown.
The windows were covered with dust.
I stepped out of the car.
For a moment, I was sixteen again.
Standing outside after my parents’ funeral.
Believing life couldn’t get worse.
I was wrong.
Marcus unlocked the front door.
The smell hit me immediately.
Old wood.
Dust.
And something else.
A memory.
I walked inside.
Everything looked smaller.
The living room where my father used to read.
The kitchen where Elena burned pancakes every Sunday.
The hallway where my mother hung family pictures.
I touched the wall.
Then I saw it.
A small mark near the floor.
Three scratches.
My father’s symbol.
I remembered.
He used to mark hiding places with three lines.
My heart started racing.
“The key,” Marcus said.
I looked at him.
“You knew?””
He nodded.
“Your father told me.””
I knelt down.
Behind the wooden panel was a small lock.
My hands shook as I inserted the key.
It turned easily.
The panel opened.
Inside was a small metal box.
Exactly like the one I remembered.
I stared at it.
Twelve years.
Twelve years hidden beneath my childhood home.
Elena covered her mouth.
“Ethan…”
I picked it up.
It was heavier than expected.
Inside, there was a letter.
A photograph.
And a small envelope marked:
*DNA RESULTS.*
My entire body froze.
Adrian’s words came back.
“You’re mine.””
“No,” I whispered.
Marcus looked at the envelope.
“Open it.””
I couldn’t.
Not yet.
Because once I did…
There was no going back.
Elena reached for my hand.
“Whatever it says…”
She looked into my eyes.
“You’re still my brother.””
I looked at her.
“You don’t know that.””
Her face fell.
“What?””
“What if everything is a lie?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
“How do you know?””
“Because family isn’t just blood.””
The words reminded me of my father.
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a document.
A DNA test.
Two names.
*Ethan Carter.*
And…
*Adrian Whitmore.*
The result was printed clearly.
*Probability of biological relationship: 99.98%.*
The room went silent.
I couldn’t breathe.
Marcus looked away.
Elena started crying.
“No…”
I stared at the paper.
Adrian wasn’t lying.
He was my father.
My enemy.
My brother-in-law.
The man who destroyed my life.
The man who trapped my sister.
The man who had spent years hiding the truth.
My own blood.
Then I noticed something.
A second page.
A handwritten note from my father.
I unfolded it.
The handwriting was unmistakable.
My father’s final words.
*Ethan,*
*If you are reading this, then Adrian has found you.*
My hands shook.
I kept reading.
*I’m sorry. I wanted to protect you. I wanted you to grow up never knowing what I discovered.*
A tear fell onto the page.
*Adrian is your brother. But he is not the only person who lied to you.*
I stopped.
Slowly, I looked up.
Elena’s face had gone pale.
Marcus looked terrified.
The next sentence was written darker.
Like my father had pressed the pen into the paper with all his strength.
*Your mother knew the truth before I did.*
My blood went cold.
My mother?
The woman who died twelve years ago?
The woman I believed was innocent?
The note continued.
*And she made a choice that changed all our lives.*
Suddenly, the old house creaked.
A floorboard moved upstairs.
Someone was inside.
Marcus immediately stood.
“Don’t move.””
I grabbed the metal box.
“Who’s there?””
No answer.
Then footsteps.
Slow.
Deliberate.
Coming down the stairs.
Elena grabbed my arm.
“Ethan…”
The figure appeared at the top of the staircase.
An elderly woman.
Holding a photograph.
I recognized her immediately.
Not because I had seen her recently.
Because I had seen her in my childhood memories.
My mother’s closest friend.
The woman everyone believed left the city years ago.
She looked at me with tears in her eyes.
“Ethan.””
Her voice trembled.
“You finally know.””
I stepped forward.
“Know what?””
She looked at the DNA report in my hand.
Then whispered:
“The truth about your mother.””
She lifted the photograph.
And when I saw who was standing beside my mother in it…
My entire world collapsed.
Because the man in the picture was not my father.
It was Thomas Whitmore.
