The Woman My Husband Chose / Chapter 9 / 10

Chapter 9: The Night Everything Changed

Richard held the phone away from his ear.

He didn't hang up.

He didn't speak.

He just stared at Daniel.

The room had become unbearably quiet.

Everyone was watching everyone else.

Like the truth had become a weapon, and nobody wanted to be the first person hit by it.

Finally, Richard lifted the phone again.

“Victoria.””

A pause.

“Yes?””

“Why should I believe you?””

The silence on the other end was long.

Long enough that Richard almost thought she had disconnected.

Then she answered.

“You shouldn't.””

Richard frowned.

“What?””

“You shouldn't believe me.””

Her voice was strangely calm.

“Not after everything.””

He looked at Daniel.

“Then why are you calling?””

“Because I know what Daniel does.””

Daniel's expression changed.

Richard noticed.

Victoria continued.

“He gives people half the truth.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Richard, don't listen to her.””

Richard raised his hand.

The gesture stopped him.

For the first time, Richard didn't want anyone interrupting.

Not Victoria.

Not Daniel.

Not his mother.

Nobody.

“Tell me about the night my father died.””

Victoria went silent.

Then:

“Ask Daniel where he was.””

Richard looked at Daniel.

Daniel said nothing.

That silence was louder than any confession.

Richard's voice lowered.

“Where were you?””

Daniel looked away.

“Richard.””

“Where were you?””

A long pause.

Then Daniel answered.

“At the hospital.””

Richard's stomach tightened.

“Why?””

“Because Thomas called me.””

“Before the accident?””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

Richard stared.

“What did he say?””

Daniel didn't answer.

Richard stepped closer.

“What did he say?””

Daniel looked exhausted.

“He said he found something.””

“What?””

Daniel looked at Eleanor.

Then at Richard.

“About Samuel.””

The room went cold.

Richard remembered.

His biological father.

The name everyone avoided.

“The night he died,” Daniel continued, “Thomas was planning to meet Samuel.””

Richard frowned.

“Why?””

“To confront him.””

“About what?””

Daniel hesitated.

“About you.””

Richard felt his chest tighten.

Daniel continued.

“Thomas believed Samuel had returned.””

Eleanor whispered:

“He was afraid.””

Richard looked at her.

“You knew?””

She nodded.

“Thomas told me.””

“And you did nothing?””

Her eyes filled.

“What could I do?””

Richard had no answer.

Because for the first time, he understood something.

Everyone in his life had been trapped by fear.

But he was the one who paid the price.

Richard looked at Daniel.

“What happened at the hospital?””

Daniel took a slow breath.

“I arrived too late.””

Victoria's voice came through the phone.

“That's not true.””

Daniel looked toward the phone.

Richard held it up.

Victoria continued.

“Daniel arrived before the ambulance.””

Richard's eyes moved back to him.

“Is that true?””

Daniel didn't answer.

“Daniel.””

Finally, he nodded.

“Yes.””

The room froze.

Richard felt something inside him break again.

“You lied.””

“I was trying to protect—”

Richard laughed bitterly.

“Don't.””

The word stopped him.

“Don't say that.””

Daniel looked down.

Richard shook his head.

“Everyone says that.””

He looked around.

“My entire life has been people protecting me from the truth.””

He turned back to Daniel.

“Why were you there?””

Daniel's face tightened.

“Because Thomas called me.””

“Why?””

“He needed help.””

“With what?””

Daniel was silent.

Richard waited.

Finally:

“He had proof.””

“Proof of what?””

Daniel looked at Victoria's phone call still active.

Then he said:

“Proof that Samuel and Victoria had been working together.””

Richard closed his eyes.

Another connection.

Another betrayal.

Victoria immediately responded.

“I told you.””

Richard ignored her.

Daniel continued.

“Thomas discovered they were planning to take control of everything.””

“Everything?””

“The company.””

“The money?””

“Yes.””

“The trust?””

“Yes.””

Richard looked down.

“And me?””

Daniel's silence answered.

“They were planning to use me.””

“Yes.””

A cold anger replaced the pain.

Not because people wanted money.

Money was simple.

It was numbers.

Documents.

Accounts.

But he was a person.

A child.

A husband.

A son.

And everyone had treated him like a piece on a board.

Richard looked at Eleanor.

“Did Dad know?””

She nodded.

“He knew.””

“And he still loved me.””

“Yes.””

Richard swallowed.

The truth hurt.

But somehow, it also healed something.

Then Victoria spoke.

“Richard.””

He looked at the phone.

“I need you to hear this.””

He almost laughed.

“Why?””

“Because Daniel was the last person to see Thomas alive.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

Richard turned.

“Is that true?””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

“What happened?””

Daniel looked at the floor.

“I found Thomas in his office.””

“Alive?””

“Yes.””

Richard waited.

“What did he say?””

Daniel's voice became quiet.

“He said he had made a mistake.””

Richard frowned.

“What mistake?””

Daniel looked at Eleanor.

Then Richard.

“He said he trusted the wrong people.””

A chill moved through the room.

Richard whispered:

“Who?””

Daniel didn't answer.

Richard stepped forward.

“Who did he say?””

Daniel's eyes filled with regret.

“He said…”

A pause.

“He said he should have protected you from your grandfather.””

Richard froze.

“Arthur?””

Daniel nodded.

Richard looked at the photograph.

His grandfather.

The man who supposedly protected the family.

The man who knew everything.

“What did Arthur do?””

Daniel opened his mouth.

But before he could answer, the lights in the house went out.

Darkness swallowed the room.

Eleanor gasped.

Emily immediately moved toward her.

“What happened?””

Nobody answered.

Then came a sound.

A door opening downstairs.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Someone entering the house.

Richard's body tensed.

“Who is there?””

No answer.

The footsteps continued.

One step.

Then another.

Daniel reached into his coat.

Richard noticed.

“What are you doing?””

Daniel pulled out his phone.

“Calling the police.””

The footsteps stopped.

Everyone froze.

Then a voice came from the hallway.

An older man's voice.

Calm.

Familiar.

“Richard.””

His blood turned cold.

Because he knew that voice.

He had heard it his entire life.

“Grandfather?””

Arthur Coleman stepped into the dim light.

His expression was unreadable.

But his eyes were fixed on the papers scattered across the bed.

Then on Daniel.

“You weren't supposed to tell him.””

Richard stared.

“You knew.””

Arthur looked at him.

“Yes.””

The answer was immediate.

No denial.

No excuse.

Richard felt his anger rise.

“You knew who my father was.””

“Yes.””

“You knew Thomas wasn't my biological father.””

“Yes.””

“You knew Victoria was lying.””

Arthur remained silent.

Richard stepped closer.

“And you let me marry her.””

Arthur's face changed slightly.

“I tried to stop it.””

Richard laughed.

“When?””

“Before the wedding.””

Richard froze.

“What?””

Arthur looked at him.

“I told you she was dangerous.””

Richard remembered.

A distant conversation.

Years ago.

His grandfather sitting across from him.

Saying:

“Some people love what you have, not who you are.””

Richard had ignored him.

Because Victoria had cried.

Because she had convinced him Arthur was old-fashioned.

Because he loved her.

Arthur continued:

“But you wouldn't listen.””

Richard looked away.

Because that was true.

Then Arthur looked at Daniel.

“You still don't know everything.””

Daniel frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

Arthur walked toward the bed.

Picked up the letter from Thomas.

And said:

“The night Thomas died…”

Everyone waited.

Arthur looked directly at Richard.

“The person who caused the accident wasn't Samuel.””

A pause.

“It wasn't Victoria.””

Another pause.

Richard felt his heart stop.

“Then who?””

Arthur placed the letter down.

And whispered:

“The person who killed Thomas…”

May you like

He looked at Eleanor.

“…was the person Thomas loved most.””
