The Woman My Husband Chose / Chapter 10 / 10

Chapter 10: The Truth That Stayed

Nobody moved.

Arthur Coleman's words remained in the darkness.

The person who killed Thomas…

Was the person Thomas loved most.

Richard looked at his grandfather.

Then at his mother.

Then at the doorway where Victoria's voice was still connected through the phone.

“No.””

The word came out before he even knew he was speaking.

“No.””

Arthur didn't look away.

Richard shook his head.

“You're talking about my mother.””

Eleanor covered her mouth.

Tears filled her eyes.

“Arthur…”

But Arthur continued.

“She knows.””

Richard turned.

“Mom?””

Eleanor couldn't look at him.

That hurt more than any confession.

Because after everything.

After every secret.

After every lie.

There was still one thing Richard had hoped for.

That his mother would finally say no.

That she would finally say someone was wrong.

But she didn't.

Richard stepped back.

“Tell me.””

Eleanor cried silently.

“Richard…”

“Tell me.””

His voice broke.

“Please.””

The room became unbearable.

Finally, Eleanor whispered:

“It was an accident.””

Richard stared.

“What?””

“It wasn't planned.””

Arthur's expression remained heavy.

“But it happened because of her.””

Richard looked at his mother.

“Explain.””

Eleanor closed her eyes.

And for the first time that night, she stopped protecting everyone else.

“I went to meet Thomas.””

Richard frowned.

“Why?””

“Because I knew everything.””

The words came slowly.

“I knew about Victoria.””

Richard looked at Daniel.

Then at Arthur.

Then back at Eleanor.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“You knew she was using me?””

“Yes.””

“And you did nothing?””

Eleanor cried harder.

“I tried.””

Richard waited.

“She found out I was going to tell Thomas.””

The room went quiet.

“Who?””

Eleanor looked toward the phone.

Toward Victoria.

But Victoria wasn't there.

Only her voice.

“I was trying to stop everything from falling apart.””

Richard stared.

“Stop what?””

Eleanor swallowed.

“The divorce.””

The word shocked him.

“Divorce?””

“Yes.””

“Thomas was going to divorce you?””

She nodded.

“He knew about James.””

Richard closed his eyes.

The truth kept cutting deeper.

“He knew everything.””

“Yes.””

“And he still stayed.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Eleanor's voice became small.

“Because of you.””

The answer hurt.

Because Thomas's love had always been there.

Even when Richard couldn't see it.

Eleanor continued.

“He told me he would never take you away from me.””

Richard looked down.

“He said you deserved a family, not a war.””

A tear moved down Richard's face.

He wiped it quickly.

Not wanting anyone to see.

But everyone did.

Eleanor continued.

“That night, I went to Thomas's office.””

“Why?””

“To beg him.””

Richard frowned.

“Beg him for what?””

“To forgive me.””

Silence.

“I wanted to tell him everything.””

Her voice shook.

“But when I arrived…”

She stopped.

Richard waited.

“When I arrived, Victoria was already there.””

Daniel looked surprised.

“She was there?””

Eleanor nodded.

“She was arguing with Thomas.””

Richard looked toward the phone.

Victoria said nothing.

“What were they arguing about?””

Eleanor closed her eyes.

“The trust.””

Richard felt cold.

“She knew?””

“Yes.””

“She knew about the protections.””

“Yes.””

“What happened?””

Eleanor's hands trembled.

“Thomas told her she would never control Richard.””

The sentence hit him.

Because it was the exact thing Victoria had spent years trying to do.

“He told her he would expose everything.””

Daniel whispered:

“And then?””

Eleanor looked at him.

“I walked in.””

Richard waited.

“And Victoria left.””

His heart stopped.

“Then why didn't you tell anyone?””

Eleanor looked broken.

“Because Thomas was still alive.””

Richard frowned.

“What?””

“He was alive when I left.””

The room went silent.

Richard looked at Daniel.

“You said you found him.””

Daniel nodded.

“I did.””

“After my mother left?””

Daniel didn't answer.

Arthur stepped forward.

“Yes.””

Richard looked at him.

“What happened after she left?””

Arthur looked at Eleanor.

“Your mother called me.””

Richard froze.

“You called him?””

Eleanor nodded.

“I was terrified.””

“Why?””

“Because Thomas was hurt.””

Richard's eyes widened.

“You found him injured?””

“Yes.””

“And?””

Eleanor started crying.

“I didn't know what to do.””

Richard stared.

“You left him?””

“No.””

Her voice broke.

“I called Arthur.””

Arthur nodded.

“She asked me to come.””

Richard looked confused.

“Why not call an ambulance?””

Eleanor went silent.

And Richard understood.

The silence.

The fear.

The reason.

She had been afraid.

Afraid of what people would discover.

Afraid of losing everything.

Afraid of the truth.

Arthur said:

“By the time I arrived, Thomas was unconscious.””

Daniel looked at him.

“You told me he was already dead.””

Arthur looked at him.

“I was protecting Eleanor.””

Daniel's face hardened.

“Again.””

Arthur looked away.

Richard felt exhausted.

Everyone had been protecting someone.

Except him.

“What happened next?””

Arthur took a breath.

“I called for help.””

Richard stared.

“And Thomas?””

“He survived for six hours.””

The room went silent.

“Six hours?””

“Yes.””

Richard's voice shook.

“Did he say anything?””

Arthur looked at him.

“He asked for you.””

Richard closed his eyes.

A broken breath escaped.

“He asked for me?””

“Yes.””

Arthur's voice softened.

“He told me to make sure you knew one thing.””

Richard looked up.

“What?””

Arthur reached into his coat.

He pulled out a small envelope.

Old.

Worn.

Richard recognized the handwriting immediately.

Thomas.

“Why didn't you give me this?””

Arthur looked ashamed.

“Because I failed him.””

Richard took the envelope.

His hands trembled.

Inside was a single page.

He unfolded it.

Richard,

If you are reading this, then the world has probably told you many things about me.

Some will be true.

Some will not.

But I need you to know this.

I never stayed because I had to.

I stayed because I chose you.

Richard stopped.

His vision blurred.

He continued.

Blood creates life.

But love creates family.

You are my son.

Not because I signed papers.

Not because I raised you.

Because every day I looked at you and chose you.

Richard pressed the letter against his chest.

For the first time that night, he allowed himself to cry.

Not for the father he lost.

For the father he never knew he had.

A few minutes passed.

Nobody spoke.

Then Richard looked at Victoria's phone.

She was still there.

Still listening.

“Victoria.””

A long pause.

“Yes.””

Her voice sounded different.

Smaller.

“Did you know?””

Silence.

Then:

“Yes.””

Richard closed his eyes.

“About Thomas?””

“Yes.””

“About my father?””

“Yes.””

“About everything?””

Another pause.

“Yes.””

Richard nodded slowly.

The pain was almost calm now.

“Why?””

Victoria answered quietly.

“Because I loved you.””

Richard looked down.

“No.””

A pause.

“You loved what I represented.””

Victoria didn't argue.

That was the first honest thing she had done.

“I thought if I had you…”

Her voice cracked.

“I would finally matter.””

Richard looked away.

“You mattered.””

A long silence.

“But you destroyed everyone who loved you.””

Victoria whispered:

“I know.””

Richard was surprised.

No defense.

No excuse.

Just acceptance.

He looked at the phone.

“I can't forgive you.””

“I know.””

“But I hope one day you understand why.””

“I do.””

The call ended.

And for the first time in twenty years, the house became quiet.

Months later, Richard stood outside the old family home.

The legal battles had ended.

The truth had come out.

Victoria faced the consequences of her actions.

Daniel rebuilt his life with the weight of his secrets finally gone.

Arthur spent his remaining years trying to repair the damage caused by his silence.

And Eleanor?

She and Richard had a long road ahead.

Not forgiveness.

Not yet.

But honesty.

A beginning.

Emily stood beside Richard in the garden.

“You okay?””

Richard looked at the house.

The place where every lie had started.

And where every truth had finally surfaced.

“I think so.””

Emily smiled softly.

“That sounds uncertain.””

“It is.””

He looked at her.

“But for the first time, uncertainty feels better than a lie.””

She nodded.

After a moment, Richard said:

“You know, my father always said family wasn't about blood.””

Emily smiled.

“Thomas?””

Richard nodded.

“Yes.””

A quiet breeze moved through the trees.

Richard looked toward the sky.

For years, he had searched for the person who gave him life.

But in the end, he found something more important.

The person who chose to stay.

The person who loved him without needing a reason.

And the truth he carried forward was simple.

A family could be built by blood.

But it could also be built by choice.

May you like

And sometimes…

the person who chooses you is the one who was your father all along.
