The Woman My Husband Chose / Chapter 6 / 10

Chapter 6: The Name Buried for Twenty Years

Nobody spoke.

Not immediately.

Because sometimes a truth was so impossible that the mind needed time to reject it before it could understand it.

Richard stood in the center of the bedroom, holding a letter from a father who wasn't his father.

A photograph of a man who had helped destroy his family.

And a lifetime of memories that suddenly belonged to someone else's story.

His eyes stayed on Eleanor.

“Say his name.””

His mother closed her eyes.

A tear slipped down her cheek.

“Richard…”

“Say his name.””

The room felt smaller.

Victoria looked away.

For the first time, she wasn't controlling the moment.

She was waiting for it to end.

Eleanor whispered:

“James Whitmore.””

The name landed like a physical blow.

Richard looked toward the photograph again.

James.

The man who had brought him birthday gifts.

The man who had taught him how to throw a baseball.

The man who had once told him, “A real father is the person who stays.””

Richard's face went pale.

“He knew?””

Eleanor didn't answer.

“Did he know?””

Her silence was enough.

Richard stepped back.

“You all knew.””

“No.””

Eleanor reached for him.

“I knew the truth.””

He pulled away.

“And you let me spend my whole life believing the wrong man abandoned me.””

“I was trying to protect you.””

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

His voice cracked.

“Everyone keeps saying they protected me.””

Richard looked around the room.

“But nobody protected me from the lies.””

Emily watched him carefully.

She saw something change.

The anger was still there.

The betrayal.

The confusion.

But beneath it was something worse.

A child realizing the adults around him had rewritten his childhood.

Richard turned toward Daniel.

“How did you know?””

Daniel looked at the floor.

“Your father told me.””

“My real father?””

Daniel hesitated.

“Thomas.””

Richard froze.

Daniel continued.

“Thomas knew before he died.””

Victoria immediately looked at him.

“Don't.””

Daniel ignored her.

“He discovered the affair.””

Eleanor lowered her head.

“He discovered James was your biological father.””

Richard looked at his mother.

“And he stayed?””

Eleanor nodded slowly.

“He stayed.””

The answer hurt.

Because it destroyed the last piece of anger Richard had held onto.

“He knew?””

“Yes.””

“And he still raised me?””

“Yes.””

Richard covered his mouth.

His eyes filled.

Not with tears.

Not yet.

He wasn't ready to cry for a man he spent years hating.

Daniel spoke softly.

“Thomas wrote that letter because he wanted you to know one thing.””

Richard looked down at the paper.

“He loved me.””

“Yes.””

Richard laughed quietly.

A broken sound.

“My whole life I thought he left because I wasn't enough.””

Eleanor started crying.

“No.””

“I thought he chose not to fight for me.””

“No.””

“I hated him.””

His voice became smaller.

“I hated him for something he never did.””

Nobody responded.

Because there was nothing to say.

Some apologies arrived too late.

Some truths came after the damage was already done.

Then Richard looked at Victoria.

“And you knew.””

She didn't deny it.

That hurt more.

“How long?””

Victoria stayed silent.

“How long did you know?””

Her expression hardened.

“Since before we married.””

The room went completely still.

Richard stared.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“And you married me anyway?””

Victoria's eyes flashed.

“Because I loved you.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

Victoria turned.

“You don't get to decide that.””

“I watched you.””

His voice was calm.

“That was the difference between me and everyone else.””

Richard looked at Daniel.

“What are you saying?””

Daniel looked at Victoria.

“She didn't choose you because of who you were.””

Victoria laughed.

“You're unbelievable.””

“She chose you because of what you represented.””

Richard's face changed.

“What?””

Daniel placed another document on the bed.

“Thomas changed his will after discovering the truth.””

Richard looked down.

“About me?””

“Yes.””

“What did he do?””

Daniel looked directly at him.

“He protected you.””

Richard read the document.

His eyes moved over the words.

A trust.

Inheritance protection.

A condition.

He looked confused.

“What does this mean?””

Daniel answered.

“Thomas knew Victoria and James might try to control your inheritance.””

Victoria's voice sharpened.

“Stop.””

“So he created safeguards.””

Richard looked at her.

“You couldn't access my money?””

Her silence answered.

Daniel continued.

“Not directly.””

Richard felt sick.

“So she married me because…”

“Because if she became your wife, she could influence you.””

Victoria's face changed.

“That is not true.””

Daniel looked at Richard.

“Ask yourself something.””

Richard said nothing.

“Why did she always handle your accounts?””

Silence.

“Why did she insist on managing your investments?””

Silence.

“Why did she convince you that you weren't good with money?””

Richard remembered.

Small comments.

Tiny moments.

“You're better with ideas, Richard.””

“Leave finances to me.””

“You don't need that stress.””

He remembered laughing.

He remembered trusting her.

He remembered feeling grateful.

Now every memory had a shadow.

Victoria stepped forward.

“You're letting them poison you against me.””

Richard looked at her.

“I don't know what's real anymore.””

For a second, something almost human crossed her face.

Pain.

Maybe.

But then it vanished.

“You think you're finally seeing the truth.””

She looked at Daniel.

“You're not.””

Daniel frowned.

Victoria continued.

“Ask him why he disappeared for ten years.””

Richard looked at Daniel.

“What?””

Daniel became quiet.

Victoria smiled.

“There are always missing pieces.””

Richard turned.

“Daniel?””

The lawyer looked uncomfortable.

“I left because I was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

Daniel looked at Victoria.

“Of her.””

Victoria laughed.

“Me?””

“Yes.””

The word was immediate.

Certain.

Daniel took a breath.

“After Thomas died, I tried to expose what happened.””

Richard listened.

“I had evidence.””

“Then what?””

“Someone threatened my daughter.””

The room went silent.

Richard stared.

“Your daughter?””

Daniel nodded.

“They told me if I went to the police, she would lose everything.””

Victoria shook her head.

“Lies.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Your exact words were, ‘People disappear every day. Don't make your daughter one of them.’”

Richard looked at Victoria.

“No.””

She didn't answer.

That was enough.

Richard stepped away.

“You threatened his daughter?””

Victoria's voice became cold.

“You don't understand the situation.””

“No.””

Richard shook his head.

“I understand enough.””

Victoria's eyes narrowed.

“You think you're better than me?””

“No.””

He looked exhausted.

“I think I never knew you.””

The sentence hit harder than anger.

Because anger meant there was still something left.

Victoria looked at him for a long moment.

Then she picked up her purse.

“Fine.””

Everyone watched.

She walked toward the door.

Richard didn't stop her.

Before leaving, she paused.

“There's one thing nobody told you.””

Richard looked up.

“What?””

Victoria smiled.

Not kindly.

Not sadly.

Like someone who still believed she had the final move.

“James Whitmore isn't your biological father.””

Richard froze.

Eleanor looked shocked.

Daniel's face changed.

Victoria opened the bedroom door.

“You've spent all night searching for the truth.””

She looked back.

“But you haven't asked the most important question.””

Richard stared.

“What question?””

Her smile disappeared.

“Who is your real father?””

Then she walked away.

The sound of her footsteps echoed down the hallway.

Richard stood frozen.

May you like

Because for the first time all night…

Victoria sounded like she knew something nobody else did.
