The Woman My Husband Chose / Chapter 1 / 10

Chapter 1: The Lie in the Bedroom

The words tore through the bedroom like broken glass.

“Your wife tried to kill me.””

Richard Coleman stopped breathing.

His mother's trembling finger remained pointed directly at Victoria.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Emily Carter was still on the floor beside the bed. Blood from the small cut on her lower lip touched her fingertips as she covered her mouth, more from shock than pain.

Victoria stood near the armchair, one hand pressed against her chest.

Her face was colorless.

Then the mask returned.

“Richard…”

Her voice was soft.

Controlled.

Almost wounded.

“Your mother is confused.””

Richard didn't answer.

Victoria slowly approached him, her heels clicking against the hardwood floor.

“You know how sick she is.””

Eleanor's eyes widened.

“No…”

Victoria turned slightly.

“What?””

Eleanor's voice trembled.

“No. Don't listen to her.””

Richard looked between them.

His wife.

His mother.

The woman he had promised to protect.

The woman who raised him after his father walked away.

He wanted the room to make sense.

But nothing did.

Victoria gave a sad little smile.

“She barely knows what she's saying.””

Eleanor shook her head violently.

“Her!””

Her finger moved toward Victoria again.

“Her!””

Victoria sighed.

“Richard, this is exactly what I mean.””

Emily pushed herself up from the floor, ignoring the pain in her shoulder.

“She isn't confused.””

Richard looked at her.

Emily swallowed.

“She knows exactly who hurt her.””

The silence that followed was heavier than shouting.

Richard's eyes moved to the broken ceramic pieces scattered across the floor.

The vase.

His mother's favorite vase.

Then his gaze moved to Emily's face.

The red mark from his hand was already appearing across her cheek.

His expression changed.

Because he remembered.

He had struck her.

He had walked into the room, heard Victoria scream, and reacted.

He had never asked what happened.

Never asked Emily why she was on the floor.

Never asked why his mother looked terrified.

Emily saw the realization in his eyes.

But she looked away.

That hurt more than if she had screamed at him.

Richard turned toward Victoria.

“What happened before I came in?””

“I told you.””

“Tell me again.””

Victoria hesitated.

Only for a second.

But Richard noticed.

“Emily became aggressive.””

“Why?””

“She was arguing with your mother.””

“About what?””

Victoria's eyes flickered toward Eleanor.

“Medication.””

Emily let out a bitter laugh.

“That is a lie.””

Richard's jaw tightened.

Victoria immediately pointed at her.

“See? She's angry. She's trying to manipulate you.””

Emily stared at him.

“I don't care about this job.””

Her voice shook.

“I don't care if you fire me.””

She looked at Eleanor.

“I care that your mother is afraid of your wife.””

Richard looked toward his mother.

Eleanor's eyes filled with tears.

Not angry tears.

Not confused tears.

Fear.

Real fear.

Victoria stepped closer to the bed.

“Eleanor, sweetheart—”

Eleanor recoiled.

It was tiny.

A movement most people might have missed.

But Richard saw it.

And Victoria saw that he saw it.

Her expression hardened for the briefest moment before becoming gentle again.

“Richard, please.””

She reached for his arm.

He stepped away.

The movement surprised both of them.

Victoria lowered her hand.

“Are you seriously believing them over me?””

Richard looked uncomfortable.

“I’m trying to understand.””

“No.””

Victoria's voice became sharper.

“You’re trying to find someone to blame.””

Emily stared at her.

“There it is.””

Victoria turned.

“What?””

“The real you.””

Victoria laughed quietly.

“Careful.””

Emily froze.

The way Victoria said it wasn't a warning.

It was a threat.

Richard noticed.

“What did you mean by that?””

Victoria looked at him innocently.

“Nothing.””

But Emily knew.

She had seen that look before.

Two weeks ago.

In the kitchen.

When Eleanor had quietly asked for help.

Emily had been hired as Eleanor's private caregiver after a fall left the older woman unable to move around easily. At first, Victoria had seemed grateful.

Too grateful.

She brought Emily coffee.

She thanked her constantly.

She called her “a blessing.””

But slowly, the kindness disappeared.

The locked medicine cabinet appeared.

The private conversations stopped.

The excuses began.

Eleanor started missing appointments.

Her favorite meals stopped appearing.

And every time Emily tried to ask Richard if something was wrong, Victoria somehow appeared first.

Always smiling.

Always explaining.

Always controlling the story.

Richard rubbed his forehead.

“I need everyone to calm down.””

Emily almost laughed.

Calm down.

That was what people said when they didn't know who was telling the truth.

Eleanor reached for Richard's hand.

“Son…”

He looked at her.

“Tell him.””

Victoria immediately stepped forward.

“Mom, you need to rest.””

Eleanor flinched again.

Richard noticed.

“Victoria.””

She stopped.

“What?””

“Let her talk.””

For the first time that night, Victoria looked afraid.

Just for a moment.

Then it disappeared.

Eleanor gripped Richard's hand.

“She wanted me gone.””

Richard frowned.

“What?””

“She said this house would be hers if I wasn't here.””

Victoria's face changed.

“That is insane.””

“She said I was ruining your life.””

“Mom, stop.””

“She said Emily would leave because she knew too much.””

Richard looked at Victoria.

“Did you say that?””

Victoria opened her mouth.

Closed it.

Then smiled sadly.

“You really want to believe this?””

Richard didn't answer.

That was the problem.

Victoria had always known exactly how to control a room.

But tonight, something was different.

Tonight, he was watching.

Emily walked toward the door.

Richard looked at her.

“Where are you going?””

She stopped.

“Home.””

“You can't just leave.””

Emily looked back at him.

“Why?””

He didn't have an answer.

Because ten minutes ago, he had treated her like a criminal.

Now he wanted her to stay and explain.

“I need time,” he said.

Emily nodded slowly.

“You needed time before you hit me.””

The words landed harder than anything else.

Richard looked away.

Victoria folded her arms.

“She attacked your mother.””

Emily turned toward her.

“No.””

Her voice was quiet.

“She protected her.””

Then Emily reached for the doorknob.

Before she opened it, Eleanor whispered:

“Emily.””

Emily turned.

The older woman's face was pale.

Her lips trembled.

“Don't let him read the papers.””

Richard frowned.

“What papers?””

Eleanor looked directly at Victoria.

And Victoria's entire expression changed.

Not much.

Just enough.

Enough for Emily to notice.

Enough for Richard to notice.

“What papers, Mom?””

Eleanor's hand shook as she pointed toward the locked drawer beside the bed.

“The ones she made me sign.””

Richard walked toward the drawer.

Victoria moved instantly.

“Richard, don't.””

He stopped.

The room went silent.

Because Victoria had never sounded afraid before.

Richard slowly turned around.

“Why?””

Victoria stared at the drawer.

Then at him.

And whispered:

“Because those papers will destroy this family.””

Richard reached for the key sitting on Eleanor's nightstand.

But before his fingers touched it, Victoria said one sentence that froze everyone in the room.

“Richard…”

Her voice cracked.

“You should ask Emily why she was really hired.””

Emily's face changed.

Because she knew.

The secret she had spent months protecting was about to come out.

And Richard had no idea that the woman he trusted most had been lying to him from the beginning.
