Chapter 5: The Father I Never Knew

Richard stared at the photograph.

His mind refused to accept what his eyes were seeing.

The picture was old.

The edges were worn.

The colors had faded into soft shades of gray.

But the faces were clear.

Victoria.

And a man standing beside her.

A man Richard knew.

A man who had attended family dinners.

A man who had held his shoulder when Richard graduated.

A man who had told him, “Your father would be proud.””

Richard's lips parted.

“No.””

Nobody moved.

Because everyone knew.

The moment before the truth was spoken.

The moment when a life could still pretend to be normal.

Daniel watched him carefully.

“Say his name.””

Richard looked up.

His voice was barely there.

“James Whitmore.””

Victoria closed her eyes.

And that was all the confirmation Richard needed.

He looked at her.

“You knew.””

Victoria didn't answer.

“You knew him.””

“Richard—”

“You knew him.””

His voice grew louder.

The anger finally breaking through the confusion.

“You brought him into my life?””

Victoria took a step forward.

“You don't understand.””

“No.””

Richard shook his head.

“I don't understand anything anymore.””

Emily stood quietly near the wall.

She wanted to comfort him.

But she knew better.

Some pain was too deep for another person to touch.

Daniel picked up the photograph.

“James Whitmore was your father's closest business partner.””

Richard laughed bitterly.

“My father trusted him.””

“Yes.””

“And my father trusted Victoria.””

Daniel nodded.

“That was the problem.””

Victoria's expression hardened.

“Stop pretending Thomas was innocent.””

Richard turned toward her.

“What did you do?””

She looked at him.

Not the way a wife looked at her husband.

Not the way someone looked at the person they loved.

She looked at him like he was a problem she needed to solve.

“I did what I had to do.””

Richard felt his stomach drop.

“You just admitted it.””

“I admitted nothing.””

“You said you did what you had to do.””

Victoria stepped closer.

“Because nobody else was going to protect me.””

Daniel gave a quiet, angry laugh.

“Protect you?””

Victoria ignored him.

“You have no idea what it was like.””

Richard stared.

“What what was like?””

“Being judged by your father.””

“My father?””

“Yes.””

She pointed toward the photograph.

“Thomas Coleman treated everyone around him like they were replaceable.””

Eleanor whispered:

“That is not true.””

Victoria looked at her.

“You were afraid of him too.””

Eleanor went silent.

Richard noticed.

Again.

Another silence.

Another secret.

He looked at his mother.

“Was she right?””

Eleanor looked heartbroken.

“Your father made mistakes.””

Richard waited.

“But he loved you.””

The words hit him harder.

Because he wanted to believe them.

He needed to.

Daniel opened another folder.

“James and Victoria were not just having an affair.””

Richard looked at him.

“What?””

Victoria's face changed.

“Daniel.””

“They were working together.””

Richard felt cold.

“To do what?””

Daniel placed documents on the bed.

“To transfer control of Thomas Coleman's company.””

Richard looked down.

Names.

Dates.

Signatures.

His father's company.

His family's legacy.

All connected to Victoria.

“This doesn't prove anything.””

Daniel looked at him.

“No?””

He pointed to a line.

“That's Victoria's signature.””

Richard stared.

Then another.

“That's James.””

Another.

“That's an account created three months before your father died.””

Richard looked up.

“Whose account?””

Daniel was quiet.

Then:

“Yours.””

Richard frowned.

“My account?””

“Yes.””

The room became still.

Daniel continued.

“Victoria created a trust under your name.””

Richard looked confused.

“Why?””

“Because after Thomas died, you inherited everything.””

Victoria interrupted.

“And I protected it.””

Richard turned.

“By stealing from it?””

Her face tightened.

“I invested it.””

“You moved it.””

“I managed it.””

“Without telling me.””

“Because you weren't ready.””

Richard stared at her.

The sentence sounded familiar.

Because it was the same excuse she used for everything.

You weren't ready.

You weren't prepared.

You wouldn't understand.

Always making him smaller.

Always making herself necessary.

Emily finally spoke.

“She needed you dependent on her.””

Victoria looked at her.

“You really think you understand my marriage?””

Emily shook her head.

“No.””

She looked at Richard.

“But I understand control.””

Victoria's eyes narrowed.

“You're just a caregiver.””

Emily didn't react.

“I spent six months watching Eleanor lose confidence because every decision was made for her.””

Richard looked at his mother.

Eleanor looked away.

Victoria pointed at Emily.

“She manipulated you.””

“No.””

Richard's answer came immediately.

Everyone looked at him.

Even Richard seemed surprised.

Because it was the first time he defended Emily.

Not because she was right.

But because he was finally seeing.

Victoria noticed.

And she hated it.

“You're choosing her?””

Richard shook his head.

“I don't even know what I'm choosing anymore.””

A tear moved down Victoria's face.

But Richard couldn't tell if it was real.

That realization hurt most.

He used to know.

He used to believe he knew every expression on her face.

Every change in her voice.

Every hidden emotion.

Now everything felt like a performance.

Victoria whispered:

“After everything I've done for you?””

Richard looked at her.

“What have you done?””

The question broke something.

Her expression changed.

“I stayed.””

Richard frowned.

“What?””

“I stayed when nobody else did.””

She stepped closer.

“When your father disappeared.””

Eleanor looked away.

“When your family fell apart.””

Another step.

“When you needed someone.””

Richard's voice softened slightly.

“Victoria…”

“No.””

She shook her head.

“You don't get to judge me now.””

Daniel interrupted.

“Richard.””

He looked at him.

“There is something else.””

Richard closed his eyes.

Of course there was.

Another secret.

Another piece of a life he thought he knew.

“What?””

Daniel pulled out a final document.

“This is from your father.””

Richard stared.

“What is it?””

“A letter.””

“To me?””

“No.””

Daniel looked toward Eleanor.

“To your mother.””

Eleanor immediately stood.

“No.””

The sudden movement surprised everyone.

She looked terrified.

Not afraid of Victoria.

Afraid of the letter.

Richard noticed.

“Mom.””

She shook her head.

“Please.””

“Why?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because your father wrote the truth.””

Richard took the letter from Daniel.

The paper felt heavier than it should.

He opened it.

The handwriting was the same.

His father's handwriting.

The man he thought abandoned him.

The man he hated.

The man he missed.

The first line made Richard stop.

Eleanor, if Richard ever learns who his real father is, tell him one thing.

His breathing stopped.

He kept reading.

I loved him anyway.

Richard closed his eyes.

A pain he couldn't explain moved through him.

But beneath that pain was another question.

One that had been waiting.

One that nobody wanted answered.

He looked at his mother.

“Who is my biological father?””

Nobody spoke.

Then Victoria whispered:

“You really want to know?””

Richard looked at her.

“Yes.””

She smiled sadly.

A smile that felt like a warning.

“Then ask Eleanor why she never wanted you to meet him.””

Richard turned back to his mother.

“Mom?””

Eleanor began crying.

“I was protecting you.””

“From who?””

She looked toward the door.

Toward the life outside the bedroom.

Toward a secret she had buried for decades.

And then she said a name.

A name Richard never expected.

A name that made Victoria go completely still.

“Your biological father…”

May you like

Eleanor whispered.

“…is the man who became your father's greatest enemy.””
