Chapter 4: The Man Who Knew Everything
Richard couldn't move.
The stranger's words hung in the doorway like a threat.
“She was after yours.””
Victoria immediately stepped forward.
“Daniel, leave.””
The man didn't look at her.
That was the first thing Richard noticed.
Daniel Hayes wasn't afraid of Victoria.
Everyone else in the room had reacted to her at some point.
Eleanor with fear.
Emily with caution.
Richard with confusion.
But Daniel?
He looked tired.
Like he had spent years carrying something he wanted to put down.
Richard stepped closer.
“You know my name.””
Daniel looked at him.
“I know a lot more than your name.””
Victoria's voice became sharp.
“This is my house.””
“No.””
Daniel finally looked at her.
“This was never your house.””
The room went silent.
Victoria's face changed.
Only slightly.
But Richard saw it.
The calm disappeared.
“Richard,” Victoria said quietly, “don't listen to him.””
Daniel gave a humorless smile.
“That sentence should sound familiar.””
Richard looked between them.
“What is going on?””
Daniel picked up his briefcase.
“I came here because I knew this day would happen.””
Victoria laughed.
“You're dramatic.””
“No.””
Daniel opened the briefcase.
“I'm late.””
Inside were folders.
Old documents.
Photographs.
Bank records.
Richard stared at them.
“What are those?””
“Proof.””
Victoria immediately moved toward him.
“Don't.””
Richard looked at her.
One word.
A single word.
But it stopped her.
Daniel noticed.
“She always did that.””
Richard frowned.
“What?””
“Made people feel guilty for asking questions.””
Victoria glared.
“You don't know him.””
Daniel looked at Richard.
“I knew your father for twenty-five years.””
He placed a folder on the bed.
“And I watched Victoria convince him he was losing everything.””
Eleanor closed her eyes.
“I knew.””
Richard looked at his mother.
“You knew?””
Her face broke.
“I knew something was wrong.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because you were happy.””
Richard looked away.
“Happy?””
“Yes.””
Eleanor's voice trembled.
“You loved her.””
The sentence hurt.
Because it was true.
Richard had loved Victoria completely.
He had defended her.
Chosen her.
Built his entire adult life around her.
Daniel opened the folder.
“Your father discovered Victoria had been moving money through accounts connected to her name.””
Richard looked at Victoria.
“You said you borrowed money.””
“I did.””
“How much?””
Daniel answered.
“Three hundred thousand dollars.””
Richard froze.
Victoria looked at Daniel.
“Don't.””
Daniel continued.
“And that was only the beginning.””
Richard's eyes moved back to his wife.
“Is that true?””
Victoria crossed her arms.
“You really think a stranger knows more about me than you?””
Daniel shook his head.
“That's exactly how she survives.””
Richard looked at him.
“Explain.””
Daniel took out several pages.
“Your father started investigating after he noticed missing funds.””
He placed the papers down.
“But before he could confront her, she changed the situation.””
“How?””
“She convinced everyone around him that he was becoming unstable.””
Richard's face tightened.
“My father wasn't unstable.””
“No.””
Daniel looked at Eleanor.
“He was being isolated.””
Eleanor nodded slowly.
“She made people question him.””
Victoria laughed.
“This is ridiculous.””
Daniel ignored her.
“She told employees he was confused.””
He placed another document down.
“She told friends he was paranoid.””
Another page.
“She told Richard—”
Daniel stopped.
Richard stared.
“What?””
Daniel looked at him.
“She told you your father left because he didn't care enough to stay.””
Richard felt something inside him break.
Because that was the story he had carried.
His father's abandonment.
His father's failure.
His father's rejection.
A lie.
A lie repeated so many times it became a memory.
Richard whispered:
“She said he didn't even say goodbye.””
Eleanor covered her mouth.
Daniel looked down.
“Because he couldn't.””
Richard turned.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel reached into the folder.
He pulled out a photograph.
A hospital room.
An older man lying in a bed.
Richard took it.
His hands started shaking.
“That’s…”
“Your father.””
Richard stared.
“When was this taken?””
“Three days before the accident.””
The room became completely silent.
Richard looked at Victoria.
“You told me he died instantly.””
Victoria didn't answer.
His voice became louder.
“You told me he never thought about us.””
Still nothing.
“Victoria.””
Her eyes hardened.
“You want the truth?””
Richard stared.
“Yes.””
She took a breath.
“Your father was weak.””
Eleanor gasped.
Richard stepped back.
“What?””
“He couldn't handle losing control.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No. He couldn't handle someone stealing from him.””
Victoria turned toward him.
“You don't get to act innocent.””
Daniel's expression changed.
“I was your father's lawyer.””
“You were his employee.””
“I was the man who found your offshore accounts.””
Richard looked at Victoria.
“Offshore?””
She looked at him.
And for the first time, she looked angry.
Not hurt.
Not afraid.
Angry.
“You have no idea what your father was like.””
Richard said nothing.
“You think he was some perfect man because he died?””
“No.””
His answer surprised her.
Richard looked at the papers.
“I think I was lied to.””
Victoria stared at him.
Then she said something quietly.
“By everyone.””
Richard frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Victoria looked at Eleanor.
“She never told you the truth either.””
Eleanor's face went pale.
Richard noticed.
“Mom?””
Eleanor looked away.
“Richard…”
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“Not again.””
Daniel looked at Eleanor.
“Tell him.””
Victoria smiled.
A small, cold smile.
“Yes.””
She stepped back.
“Tell him why your father was really leaving.””
Richard looked at his mother.
“What is she talking about?””
Eleanor's hands trembled.
“I wanted to protect you.””
“From what?””
The older woman couldn't answer.
Richard looked around the room.
Everyone knew something.
Everyone except him.
The realization was painful.
“What happened?””
Eleanor finally whispered:
“Your father didn't leave because of Victoria.””
Richard's stomach dropped.
“Then why?””
She looked at the photograph.
“He left because he found out you weren't his son.””
The words didn't make sense.
Not at first.
Richard stared.
“What?””
Victoria's expression softened.
Almost sadly.
Richard looked at Eleanor.
“Mom?””
She started crying.
“I was going to tell you.””
“When?””
“I don't know.””
Richard stepped back.
“You let me believe he abandoned me.””
“I was scared.””
“Scared of what?””
Eleanor couldn't speak.
Daniel answered.
“Because Thomas Coleman found out the truth before he died.””
Richard looked at him.
“What truth?””
Daniel picked up another document.
“A DNA test.””
Victoria watched him carefully.
Richard felt the room spinning.
“No.””
Daniel handed him the paper.
Richard didn't want to take it.
But his hand moved anyway.
The page was old.
The ink faded.
The result was clear.
*Probability of paternity: 0%.*
He couldn't breathe.
Twenty years of memories.
His father's voice.
His father's hands.
His father's anger.
His father's absence.
Everything shifted.
Victoria whispered:
“Now you understand.””
Richard looked up.
“What?””
“Why your father left.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
He looked directly at Richard.
“That isn't why he left.””
Richard stared.
“Then why?””
Daniel's face became serious.
“Because after Thomas discovered the truth…”
He paused.
“And learned who your biological father was…”
The room went silent.
Daniel looked toward Victoria.
“Your father realized she had been planning this for years.””
Richard's fingers tightened around the paper.
“Planning what?””
Daniel slowly opened the final folder.
Inside was one last photograph.
A picture of Victoria standing beside a man.
A man Richard recognized.
His blood turned cold.
Because the man in the photograph was someone he had seen before.
Someone who had been in his life for years.
Daniel whispered:
“The person who helped Victoria destroy your family…”
May you like
He placed the photograph on the bed.
“…was the man who raised you.””
