Chapter 7: The Person Who Never Left
For twenty years, I believed my life was built on love.
I never questioned the pictures on the walls.
I never questioned the birthday cards signed with my father’s name.
I never questioned the way Richard Richardson looked at me like I was the most important person in the room.
But now, every memory felt like it had a shadow behind it.
Someone had been watching my family.
Someone had known the truth.
And someone had stayed silent.
“Who?”” I asked.
My voice sounded different.
Older.
Like something inside me had changed overnight.
Laura looked down at the letter.
“I don’t know.””
I stared at her.
“You came here with answers.””
“I came here with pieces.””
She looked at my father.
“Daniel spent the last weeks of his life trying to put everything together.””
My father frowned.
“Why?””
“Because he realized someone had been manipulating all of you.””
My mother suddenly stood.
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
She shook her head.
“You don’t understand.””
I watched her carefully.
For the first time, she didn’t look like someone hiding a mistake.
She looked terrified.
“Mom,” I said.
She looked at me.
“Who is it?””
Her lips trembled.
“I don’t know.””
My father laughed once.
A painful sound.
“Nicole, we are far past believing you don’t know.””
She looked at him.
“I’m telling the truth.””
“Then tell us everything.””
My mother sat back down.
Her hands shook.
“There was someone who knew about Michael.””
My heart raced.
“Who?””
She looked at the table.
“My father.””
I blinked.
“Grandpa?””
She nodded.
I had barely known my grandfather.
He died when I was young.
I remembered his deep voice.
His old leather chair.
The way he always smelled like peppermint.
But I never knew he was connected to this.
“My father hated Michael,” Nicole said.
“Why?””
“Because he thought Michael ruined my life.””
My father crossed his arms.
“And what does that have to do with Maya?””
Nicole swallowed.
“Everything.””
The room went silent.
She continued.
“When I found out I was pregnant, my father wanted me to give Maya up.””
My stomach dropped.
“Give me up?””
She nodded.
“He said a child born from a mistake would destroy my future.””
I stared at her.
“But you kept me.””
“Yes.””
Her voice cracked.
“Because I loved you.””
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then my father asked:
“What did your father do?””
Nicole looked away.
“He tried to make sure Michael disappeared from our lives.””
My chest tightened.
“Disappeared?””
She nodded slowly.
“Michael died because of him.””
The words felt impossible.
My father immediately shook his head.
“Nicole.””
“I know what it sounds like.””
“Because it sounds like you’re saying your father killed someone.””
She looked at him.
“I’m saying he caused the situation.””
Nobody moved.
“What situation?”” I asked.
Nicole took a deep breath.
“Michael found out my father was trying to force me to leave him.””
“And?””
“He confronted him.””
My mother’s eyes filled.
“They fought.””
I looked at Laura.
She looked down.
Like she already knew.
“My father threatened Michael,” Nicole said.
“And Michael was scared.””
“What happened after?”” my father asked.
Nicole whispered:
“He disappeared for three days.””
My heart pounded.
“Then?””
“Then they found his car.””
Nobody spoke.
I felt sick.
“And you never told anyone?””
My mother looked at me.
“I was twenty-two.””
“That doesn’t explain it.””
“No.””
She cried quietly.
“It doesn’t.””
My father walked away.
He put his hands on his head.
“This family…”
His voice broke.
“This family has been built on people protecting secrets.””
He looked at me.
“And somehow, the children were always the ones who paid.””
The words stayed with me.
Because they were true.
Ethan lost the truth about his father.
I lost the truth about mine.
And my father lost twenty years of knowing the family he thought he had.
That night, I couldn’t sleep.
Around midnight, I heard footsteps outside my bedroom.
I opened the door.
My father was sitting on the floor in the hallway.
Like he had been there for a while.
“Dad?””
He looked up.
“I didn’t want to wake you.””
I sat beside him.
For a while, we said nothing.
Then he asked:
“Do you hate me?””
My heart broke.
“What?””
“For not knowing.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
He looked at me.
“I should have protected you.””
“You did.””
“But I didn’t know what I was protecting you from.””
I leaned against his shoulder.
“You’re still my dad.””
His eyes filled.
“Thank you.””
The next morning, Laura arrived with something new.
A small box.
“I found this in Daniel’s apartment.””
My father looked suspicious.
“What is it?””
She handed it to me.
“For Maya.””
I stared.
“Why me?””
“Because Daniel wrote your name on it.””
I opened the box.
Inside was an old photograph.
A young woman.
A man.
And a little girl.
My breath stopped.
The girl was me.
I was about three years old.
But I had never seen the photo before.
I turned it over.
There was writing on the back.
A date.
And one sentence.
“She needs to know the truth before she trusts the wrong person.””
My father looked at the picture.
“Who took this?””
I turned it around.
The name was written underneath.
My hands went cold.
Because the person who took the photo…
was still alive.
May you like
And it was someone I saw every week.
Someone who had been close to my family for years.
