The Test That Wasn’t Mine / Chapter 3 / 10

Chapter 3: The Secret Behind The Secret

I didn’t sleep that night.

Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the pregnancy test on the table.

I saw my father’s face.

I saw my mother standing there, choosing silence over the truth.

The next morning, everything looked normal.

That was the worst part.

The sunlight came through the kitchen window.

The coffee machine still beeped.

The toast still popped up.

But our family was gone.

My father sat at the table holding a mug he wasn’t drinking from.

My mother stood by the counter.

They looked like strangers sharing a house.

I walked in.

Nobody spoke.

Finally, Dad said:

“Maya, I owe you an apology.””

I looked at him.

“For what?””

“For believing something before listening to you.””

My eyes burned.

“You did listen.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“I heard you. But I didn’t trust you enough.””

I sat down.

“You’re my dad. I know you.””

He looked away.

“I should have known you.””

The room became quiet.

Then my mother placed a plate on the table.

“I made breakfast.””

I stared at her.

“Seriously?””

She stopped.

“I don’t know what else to do.””

“Tell the truth.””

Her face fell.

“Maya…”

“No. You keep saying you’re protecting people. But every time you do, someone else gets hurt.””

My father looked at her.

“Who is Daniel?””

Nicole sat down slowly.

“He was someone I knew before you were born.””

Dad’s jaw tightened.

“Before me?””

She nodded.

“We dated.””

“Then why did Ethan call him Uncle Daniel?””

She looked down.

“Because he was around.””

That answer felt wrong.

“Around how?””

No response.

Then Ethan entered the kitchen.

He was holding a drawing.

“Mommy?””

Everyone looked at him.

He smiled weakly.

“I finished my picture.””

Nobody moved.

He placed it on the table.

It was a family drawing.

Four people.

My dad.

My mom.

Me.

Ethan.

And another person standing beside my mother.

A man.

I picked up the paper.

“Who is this?””

Ethan looked confused.

“That’s Uncle Daniel.””

My father stared at the drawing.

“Why is he in your family picture?””

Ethan shrugged.

“Because Mommy said he was family.””

My mother immediately stood.

“Ethan, go play.””

But my father stopped her.

“No.””

His voice was different.

“Let him answer.””

Ethan looked nervous.

“Mommy said Daniel was important.””

“Important how?”” Dad asked.

Ethan looked at my mother.

Then whispered:

“He said he was my real dad.””

Nobody breathed.

My father looked at Nicole.

“What?””

Ethan’s eyes filled with tears.

“I thought you knew.””

My mother covered her face.

And in that moment, I understood.

The pregnancy test wasn’t the only thing she had hidden.

Daniel wasn’t just some old boyfriend.

He was connected to Ethan.

My little brother.

My father stood slowly.

“Nicole.””

She couldn’t look at him.

“Richard…”

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“You let me raise a child without telling me?””

Ethan started crying.

“I’m sorry.””

My heart broke.

Because he thought this was his fault.

I immediately hugged him.

“Ethan, no. None of this is your fault.””

My father walked out of the kitchen.

Again.

But this time, he didn’t look angry.

He looked destroyed.

My mother reached for me.

I stepped away.

“Don’t.””

She froze.

“I need you to understand something, Maya.””

“What?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“The pregnancy appointment wasn’t for me.””

I frowned.

“What?””

She looked toward the hallway.

Then whispered:

“The baby isn’t mine.””

The room went cold.

I stared at her.

“What are you saying?””

She swallowed.

“The test you found…”

She looked terrified.

“It belonged to Daniel’s wife.””

My heartbeat stopped.

“What?””

My mother grabbed the edge of the counter.

“Daniel came to me because he needed help.””

“Help with what?””

She looked at me.

And then she said the one thing I never expected.

“He’s not Ethan’s biological father.””

I stared at her.

“Then who is?””

My mother’s face turned pale.

Before she could answer, the front door opened.

My father stepped back inside.

But he wasn’t alone.

A woman stood behind him.

A woman I had never seen before.

She held a folder in her hands.

And when she looked at my mother, her eyes filled with anger.

“Nicole.””

My mother stopped breathing.

The woman held up the folder.

“I think it’s time you finally told them what happened the night Ethan was born.””

May you like

And then she said a name that changed everything.

“Because Richard deserves to know who his son really is.””
