Chapter 6: The Daughter Nobody Claimed
I spent my entire life believing I knew exactly who I was.
I was Maya Richardson.
Daughter of Richard and Nicole Richardson.
Older sister to Ethan.
A normal family.
A normal life.
But in one week, my entire identity became a question mark.
My father sat at the kitchen table staring at the message.
My mother looked like she couldn’t breathe.
“Mom.””
She didn’t answer.
“Who is my father?””
Her eyes filled instantly.
That was the answer before she even spoke.
My father stood.
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“No more secrets.””
Nicole covered her face.
“I was going to tell you.””
“When?””
She looked at him.
“I don’t know.””
“That’s the problem.””
He pointed toward me.
“She deserved the truth years ago.””
I couldn’t move.
I couldn’t cry.
I couldn’t even feel angry anymore.
I just felt empty.
“Mom.””
She finally looked at me.
“I love you.””
I shook my head.
“That’s not what I asked.””
She started crying.
“I was young.””
“How young?””
“Twenty-two.””
“And Dad?””
She looked at Richard.
“He wasn’t there yet.””
My father froze.
“What does that mean?””
Nicole sat down.
“The truth is…”
She stopped.
Like saying the words would make them real.
“The truth is Daniel wasn’t the only person from my past.””
My stomach turned.
“Who?””
She whispered a name.
“Michael Carter.””
My father frowned.
“Carter?””
My mother nodded.
“Daniel’s older brother.””
The room went silent.
I looked at her.
“You’re saying my father is Daniel’s brother?””
She nodded.
And suddenly everything felt even more impossible.
My father grabbed the counter.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because when I met you, I was pregnant.””
I stared.
“What?””
She looked at me.
“I found out after we started dating.””
My father looked hurt.
“You knew?””
“Yes.””
“And you still married me?””
“I loved you.””
“Then why hide it?””
Her tears fell.
“Because Michael died.””
I blinked.
“What?””
“He died before you were born.””
My mother took a breath.
“And Daniel was the only person who knew.””
The room became silent again.
Daniel.
Always Daniel.
Every road led back to him.
My father whispered:
“So Daniel knew.””
“Yes.””
“And he let me raise another man’s daughter without telling me?””
Nicole looked down.
“He said he was protecting me.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Everyone keeps using that word.””
Nobody spoke.
Because everyone knew.
It had lost its meaning.
My father looked devastated.
But then something unexpected happened.
He walked toward me.
Not away.
Not with anger.
He took my hand.
“Maya.””
I looked at him.
“You are my daughter.””
My eyes filled.
“But I’m not…”
He interrupted.
“No.””
His voice was firm.
“Listen to me.””
He squeezed my hand.
“DNA doesn’t erase twenty years.””
I finally cried.
Because that was the one thing I needed to hear.
Not from my mother.
Not from a test.
From him.
But there was still one question.
“Who knew?””
My mother looked confused.
“What?””
“Who knew about me?””
She hesitated.
And that hesitation terrified me.
“Mom.””
She whispered:
“Daniel.””
I froze.
“What?””
“He knew from the beginning.””
My father’s face hardened.
“Then why did he come back?””
Nobody answered.
Until Laura, who had been standing silently near the door, spoke.
“Because Daniel wasn’t trying to protect anyone.””
Everyone looked at her.
“What do you mean?”” I asked.
Laura opened her purse.
She pulled out another document.
“He had a reason for keeping these secrets.””
My father took it.
“What is this?””
“His will.””
I looked confused.
“Why would his will mention us?””
Laura looked at me.
“Because Daniel left something specifically for you.””
My heart stopped.
“For me?””
She nodded.
“He left instructions that this letter could only be opened after everyone knew the truth.””
My father unfolded the paper.
His eyes moved across the page.
Then he looked at me.
I knew something was wrong.
“What does it say?””
He swallowed.
“Maya…”
“What?””
He looked at my mother.
Then back at me.
“Daniel says he wasn’t your father.””
I felt my body go cold.
“But you said…”
My father shook his head.
“No.””
He looked at the paper.
“He says Michael wasn’t your father either.””
Nobody moved.
My mother whispered:
“That’s impossible.””
Laura’s face changed.
Because she knew something.
“What?”” I asked.
She looked at me.
“Daniel wrote one final sentence.””
My hands started shaking.
“What sentence?””
She opened the letter.
And read it aloud.
“The man who raised Maya is not her biological father…”
A pause.
Then she looked at Richard.
“But the man who raised her is the only father she has ever needed.””
My eyes filled.
For one second, I thought maybe the nightmare was over.
Then Laura turned the page.
Her expression changed.
Because there was one more line.
One more secret.
And this one wasn’t about my mother.
It was about me.
“The truth about Maya’s birth was hidden because someone was still alive…”
May you like
Laura looked up.
“…and that person has been watching this family for twenty years.””
