Chapter 2: The Name My Father Didn’t Know
Nobody spoke for several seconds.
It felt like the whole house was waiting for my mother to explain.
But Nicole didn’t.
She just stood there.
Silent.
Frozen.
My father slowly placed the appointment paper on the table.
“Nicole.””
She looked up.
“Tell me I’m misunderstanding this.””
Her lips parted.
Nothing came out.
That hurt more than an answer.
“Who is Daniel Carter?”” my father asked again.
My mother wiped under her eyes.
“Richard, this isn’t the way you think.””
I almost laughed.
Because every person who says that is usually about to confirm exactly what everyone thinks.
“Then what way is it?”” I asked.
Nicole looked at me.
“Maya, please.””
“No.””
My voice shook.
“But you don’t get to say my name like you’re protecting me anymore.””
Her expression cracked.
For years, I thought my mother was the strongest person I knew.
Now I saw something else.
Someone cornered.
My father grabbed the back of a chair.
“Is Daniel the father?””
The question landed like a slap.
Ethan covered his ears.
“Dad…”
My father immediately softened.
“Sorry, buddy.””
But he didn’t look away from Nicole.
“Answer me.””
My mother sat down.
Slowly.
Like her legs couldn’t hold her anymore.
“I didn’t mean for this to happen.””
My stomach twisted.
Those words were worse than yes.
Because they meant there was something to admit.
My father looked away.
For a moment, I saw him break.
Not loudly.
Not dramatically.
Just a tiny change in his face.
Like someone had taken a piece of his world and removed it.
“How long?”” he asked.
Nicole closed her eyes.
“I don’t know.””
“That’s not an answer.””
“Months.””
My father went completely still.
“How many months?””
She whispered.
“Six.””
I felt sick.
Six months.
Six months of family dinners.
Six months of watching movies together.
Six months of pretending everything was normal.
I looked at my mother.
“You knew?””
She looked confused.
“What?””
“You knew you were pregnant for six months?””
Tears rolled down her cheeks.
“I was scared.””
I stared at her.
“You were scared, so you made Dad think I was the one who messed up?””
She didn’t respond.
That silence answered everything.
My father pushed his chair back.
“I need air.””
Nicole stood.
“Richard—”
“No.””
He held up his hand.
“I need to understand how my wife could look at our daughter and make her carry your shame.””
My mother flinched.
“I wasn’t trying to hurt her.””
“But you did.””
The words were simple.
They destroyed her.
Dad walked outside.
I followed him a few minutes later.
He was standing on the porch, staring at the street.
The same street where he taught me to ride a bike.
The same street where he waited for me after school when I was little.
“Dad?””
He didn’t turn around.
“Are you okay?””
A strange question.
Because I was the child.
He was supposed to be the one who had answers.
“I don’t know,” he whispered.
I stood beside him.
After a while, he said:
“I should have noticed.””
I shook my head.
“Dad, no.””
“I’m your father. I should have known something was wrong.””
“You trusted her.””
He looked at me.
“I trusted both of you.””
That sentence hurt.
Because he wasn’t blaming me.
He was mourning the family he thought he had.
That night, nobody ate dinner.
Nobody watched television.
Nobody acted normal.
At 11:43 p.m., I was lying in bed when I heard voices downstairs.
My mother.
And someone else.
A man.
I quietly opened my bedroom door.
The hallway was dark.
I walked toward the stairs.
“Nicole, you promised me you would tell him.””
My blood ran cold.
Daniel.
My mother whispered.
“I tried.””
“You blamed Maya?””
There was a pause.
“I didn’t know what else to do.””
I covered my mouth.
Even Daniel sounded disgusted.
“You made your daughter look guilty?””
“I was protecting us.””
“No, Nicole. You were protecting yourself.””
I stepped backward.
My foot hit the floorboard.
It creaked.
The voices stopped.
Then my mother said:
“Who’s there?””
I ran back to my room.
A few seconds later, my bedroom door opened.
Nicole stood there.
Her face was pale.
“Maya.””
I looked at her.
“Was he here?””
She didn’t answer.
That was enough.
“Mom…”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I never wanted you to find out this way.””
I laughed bitterly.
“How did you want me to find out?””
She stepped closer.
But I moved away.
May you like
Then she said something that made my entire body freeze.
“There’s something else you don’t know about Daniel.””
