The Test That Wasn’t Mine / Chapter 4 / 10

Chapter 4: The Woman At The Door

The woman standing behind my father looked like she had been carrying anger for years.

Not the kind of anger that explodes.

The kind that sits quietly in your chest until one day, someone finally gives it permission to come out.

She held a brown folder against her stomach.

Her eyes never left my mother.

“Nicole,” she repeated.

My mother looked like all the color had drained from her face.

“Laura.””

The woman’s jaw tightened.

“So you remember me.””

My father looked between them.

“Someone want to explain what’s happening?””

Nobody answered.

That silence told me this wasn’t a misunderstanding.

It was history.

A history my mother had buried.

I stepped closer to Ethan and held his hand.

He was still crying.

“Mom?””

My mother looked at him.

Then at me.

Then at my father.

“I can explain.””

My father gave a humorless laugh.

“That’s what you said yesterday.””

Nicole flinched.

Laura opened the folder.

“I came here because I was tired of waiting.””

My father stared at her.

“Waiting for what?””

She pulled out a document.

“For the truth.””

My mother immediately moved forward.

“Laura, please.””

“No.””

Laura’s voice shook.

“But not because I hate you.””

She looked at Ethan.

“Because that little boy deserves to know who he is.””

Ethan squeezed my hand tighter.

I hated that he was hearing this.

He was eight years old.

He should have been worried about homework and cartoons.

Not secrets that could break adults.

My father looked at the paper.

“What is that?””

Laura handed it to him.

“A DNA test.””

The room went silent.

My father didn’t take it immediately.

“What kind of DNA test?””

Laura swallowed.

“The one that proves Ethan is not Daniel’s son.””

My father looked confused.

Then angry.

“Why are you telling me that?””

Because he already knew.

I could see it on her face.

Laura looked at my mother.

“Because Daniel never had the courage to tell you.””

My mother whispered:

“Stop.””

Laura ignored her.

“Ethan is your son.””

The words hit harder than anything else.

My father stared.

“No.””

Laura nodded.

“Yes.””

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Then my father looked at Nicole.

“Is this true?””

My mother opened her mouth.

But no words came.

That was enough.

My father stepped back.

“You knew?””

Nicole started crying.

“I found out later.””

“How much later?””

She looked down.

“Six years ago.””

My chest tightened.

Six years.

She had known for six years.

My father’s voice became quieter.

“Six years.””

“I was scared.””

“You keep saying that.””

He looked at her.

“Every secret you kept was because you were scared.””

My mother wiped her tears.

“I thought telling you would destroy everything.””

My father laughed softly.

“You mean destroy your life.””

She looked hurt.

But she didn’t deny it.

Laura closed the folder.

“I didn’t come here to ruin your family.””

I looked at her.

“Then why did you come?””

Her expression softened.

“Because Daniel died.””

The room froze.

“What?”” my mother whispered.

Laura looked at her.

“He died three weeks ago.””

My mother covered her mouth.

For the first time since this nightmare started, she looked genuinely shocked.

“You didn’t know?””

Laura shook her head.

“No.””

Nobody spoke.

Then my father asked:

“Why does Daniel’s death have anything to do with this?””

Laura looked at Ethan.

“Because before he died, Daniel left instructions.””

My mother looked terrified.

“What instructions?””

Laura opened the folder again.

“He wanted Ethan to know the truth.””

My father stared at her.

“And what truth is that?””

Laura looked directly at him.

“That Nicole knew Ethan was yours.””

The words cut through the room.

I looked at my mother.

She didn’t move.

My father’s face changed.

Not anger.

Something worse.

Betrayal.

“Nicole.””

She whispered:

“Richard…”

“No.””

He raised his hand.

“I need to hear this.””

My mother sat down.

Her shoulders collapsed.

“I found out when Ethan was two.””

My father looked like he couldn’t understand the sentence.

“When Ethan was two?””

She nodded.

“Daniel and I had doubts.””

My stomach twisted.

“You had doubts?””

My mother looked at me.

“Maya…”

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“You don’t get to explain this away.””

She looked down.

“We did a test.””

My father closed his eyes.

“And?””

Nicole cried silently.

“And it showed Daniel wasn’t his father.””

The room went completely still.

I watched my father process those words.

The man who had coached Ethan’s baseball team.

The man who sat beside him when he had nightmares.

The man who taught him how to tie his shoes.

He wasn’t learning that he wasn’t Ethan’s father.

He was learning that he had always been.

And someone had stolen the truth from him.

My father looked at Laura.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Laura looked away.

“Because Daniel begged me not to.””

“Why?””

“Because he was afraid.””

My father’s expression hardened.

“Afraid of what?””

Laura hesitated.

Then answered.

“Afraid you would take Ethan away.””

My father stared.

“I would never do that.””

“I know.””

Her voice became softer.

“That’s why I’m here.””

Ethan suddenly spoke.

“But Dad is my dad.””

Everyone looked at him.

His face was wet with tears.

“But I don’t understand.””

My father immediately walked toward him.

He knelt down.

“Ethan.””

“Did you know?””

My father’s eyes filled.

“No, buddy.””

“Then why didn’t Mommy tell you?””

Nobody answered.

Because the answer was ugly.

My father hugged him.

And Ethan cried into his shoulder.

I looked at my mother.

For the first time in my life, I didn’t recognize her.

Later that evening, after Laura left, the house felt like a place where nobody belonged.

My father sat in the living room.

Ethan slept upstairs.

My mother stood near the window.

I watched them from the hallway.

Finally, Dad spoke.

“There’s one thing I still don’t understand.””

Nicole turned.

“What?””

He looked at her.

“If you knew Ethan was mine…”

He paused.

“Why did you let Daniel stay in our lives?””

My mother’s face changed.

And before she answered, her phone rang.

She looked at the screen.

Then immediately went pale.

My father noticed.

“Who is it?””

She didn’t respond.

“Maya?””

I looked at the screen.

A name appeared.

Daniel Carter.

But Daniel was dead.

My mother answered.

May you like

And the voice on the other end whispered:

“Nicole… you need to tell them the baby wasn’t the only thing you lied about.””
