Chapter 5: The Secret Daniel Left Behind

My mother dropped the phone.

It hit the floor with a sharp crack.

Nobody moved.

My father stared at her.

“You said Daniel was dead.””

Nicole looked terrified.

“He is.””

“Then who just called?””

She didn’t answer.

My father picked up the phone.

The screen was still glowing.

No missed call.

No number.

Nothing.

Like it had never happened.

“What is this?””

My mother shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

But I knew.

She was lying again.

I could feel it.

After everything that happened, I could recognize it now.

The small pause.

The way her eyes moved away.

The way her fingers tightened around nothing.

She knew something.

Dad looked exhausted.

“Nicole, I’m running out of patience.””

She sat down.

“I need to tell you everything.””

I crossed my arms.

“Finally.””

She looked at me.

And the pain in her eyes almost made me feel sorry for her.

Almost.

“I didn’t just hide Ethan’s truth.””

She took a shaky breath.

“I hid Daniel’s connection to our family.””

My father stared.

“What does that mean?””

My mother looked toward the stairs.

Toward Ethan’s room.

Then she whispered:

“Daniel wasn’t only your son’s biological father figure.””

I frowned.

“What does that even mean?””

She closed her eyes.

“Daniel was involved in the accident.””

The room went silent.

“What accident?”” Dad asked.

Nicole looked at him.

“The night Ethan was born.””

I felt my stomach drop.

My father’s expression changed.

Because he remembered.

Everyone remembered that night.

The storm.

The hospital.

The phone call.

The fear.

But apparently, we didn’t know everything.

“What happened?”” Dad asked.

My mother’s hands shook.

“When I was driving to the hospital, I wasn’t alone.””

My father looked confused.

“Daniel was with you?””

She nodded.

“Why?””

She didn’t answer immediately.

And somehow that scared me more.

“Because I had called him.””

My father stood.

“You called him while you were in labor?””

“No.””

She looked down.

“Before.””

Dad stared.

“Why?””

Nicole swallowed.

“Because Daniel and I had been trying to end things.””

I felt sick.

She wasn’t just admitting an affair.

She was admitting there had been a whole second life.

“We were fighting,” she continued.

“And I told him I was done.””

My father’s face was empty.

“That night, I went into labor early.””

“And Daniel?””

“He came because he was worried.””

Nobody spoke.

My mother’s voice became smaller.

“On the way to the hospital, we argued.””

My father clenched his fists.

“What happened?””

“He grabbed the steering wheel.””

I froze.

“What?””

Nicole nodded.

“I told him to leave me alone.””

Her eyes filled.

“He was angry.””

The room felt colder.

“He pulled the wheel.””

My father whispered:

“Nicole…”

“We crashed.””

My hand covered my mouth.

I had never heard this story.

Nobody had.

“What happened after?”” Dad asked.

My mother looked broken.

“I woke up in the hospital.””

“And Daniel?””

“He wasn’t hurt badly.””

My father stared.

“And you?””

She looked at him.

“I lost blood.””

A pause.

“Ethan was born early.””

I looked toward the stairs.

My little brother.

The child who had no idea his entire life was built on secrets.

My father’s voice was barely audible.

“And Daniel?””

Nicole looked away.

“He told me if I blamed him, everything would come out.””

My father understood immediately.

“You were afraid.””

She nodded.

“He said he would disappear. He said nobody would believe me.””

I looked at her.

“Then why did you keep him around?””

My mother cried.

“Because he threatened me.””

That changed the room.

My father sat down.

“What?””

“He said if I ever told you, he would tell everyone about us.””

I stared.

“And you chose silence?””

“I chose protecting Ethan.””

“No,” I said.

My mother looked at me.

“You chose protecting yourself.””

The words hurt.

But they were true.

For years, my mother had called every secret protection.

But every secret had created more damage.

The next morning, Laura came back.

She had another envelope.

My father didn’t invite her inside.

He just opened the door.

“What now?””

Laura looked at him.

“I found something in Daniel’s belongings.””

She handed him the envelope.

“What is it?””

“A letter.””

“To who?””

She looked at Nicole.

“To you.””

My mother stepped back.

“I don’t want it.””

Laura’s expression hardened.

“You should.””

My father opened it.

The handwriting was messy.

Rushed.

Like someone writing before time ran out.

He read silently.

Then his face changed.

I watched him.

“What does it say?””

He didn’t answer.

He handed it to me.

I hesitated.

Then I read.

Richard,

I know you hate me. You should.

But there are things Nicole never told you.

Things she doesn’t even know.

Ethan is your son.

But Maya…

I stopped.

My heart started racing.

My father looked at me.

“What?””

I couldn’t speak.

The letter continued.

Maya was the reason I came back into your family’s life.

Because before Nicole and I ended things…

I made a mistake.

A mistake that changes who Maya really is.

The paper shook in my hands.

My father took it.

He read the final lines.

Then he looked at my mother.

“Nicole.””

She looked terrified.

“What?””

His voice was almost a whisper.

“Did you know?””

My mother stared.

“Know what?””

He held up the letter.

“Was Daniel talking about Maya?””

Nobody answered.

Then my mother’s phone buzzed again.

This time, everyone heard it.

A message.

From an unknown number.

My father opened it.

There was only one sentence.

May you like

And it destroyed the last piece of our family.

“Ask Nicole who Maya’s real father is.””
