Chapter 9: The Man Who Was Never Supposed To Return
Grace forgot how to breathe.
The hallway was dark.
The alarm continued screaming.
Broken glass covered the nursery floor.
But none of it mattered.
Because the person standing at the end of the hallway was impossible.
A ghost.
A memory.
A man everyone believed was dead.
Daniel took one step backward.
“No.””
The man looked at him.
His face was older than the photograph.
His hair had more gray.
There were scars near his eyebrow that Grace had never seen before.
But the eyes were the same.
The eyes from the family portrait hidden in Emily’s old room.
Daniel whispered the name.
“Thomas.””
Nobody moved.
Grace looked at Daniel.
“Who is Thomas?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
Because he couldn’t.
His entire world had stopped.
The man walked closer.
Slowly.
Carefully.
“I know this is a lot.””
Daniel stared.
“You’re dead.””
Thomas looked down.
“I was supposed to be.””
The words sent a chill through Grace.
Vivian covered her mouth.
“Thomas…”
He looked at her.
“You knew I was alive.””
Vivian’s face fell.
“I thought you were gone.””
Thomas gave a sad smile.
“That’s what everyone was supposed to think.””
Clara stepped forward.
For the first time since entering the mansion, she looked nervous.
“You shouldn’t be here.””
Thomas looked at her.
“You should know better than anyone that I’m hard to get rid of.””
Grace held Leo tighter.
Everything was becoming impossible.
Too many people.
Too many lies.
Too many secrets.
She looked at Thomas.
“Who are you?””
Thomas looked at her.
Then at Leo.
His expression changed.
A mixture of pain and love.
“I’m the reason Emily was afraid.””
Daniel finally found his voice.
“Stay away from my son.””
Thomas looked at him.
“Your son?””
The words were not mocking.
They were sad.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Don’t.””
Thomas shook his head.
“Daniel, you deserve the truth.””
Grace felt her stomach tighten.
Everyone kept saying that.
The truth.
But every truth seemed to destroy something.
Thomas looked at Leo.
“His name was supposed to be different.””
Daniel froze.
“What?””
Thomas looked at Grace.
“Before Emily met Daniel, she knew me.””
Grace stared.
“Were you…”
“Yes.””
He nodded.
“I was Leo’s father.””
The room went silent.
Even the alarm seemed distant.
Daniel looked like he had been physically struck.
“No.””
Thomas looked at him.
“I’m sorry.””
“No.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No, Emily would never…”
“She did.””
Thomas’s voice softened.
“She loved you.””
Daniel looked confused.
“Then why?””
Thomas swallowed.
“Because she thought I was dead.””
Grace stared.
“What?””
Thomas looked toward the broken window.
“Years ago, I discovered what Emily’s father was doing.””
The room became quiet.
“I found the records. The false identities. The children who disappeared.””
Rachel looked down.
Thomas continued.
“When I tried to expose it, someone tried to kill me.””
Grace felt cold.
“Who?””
Thomas looked at Clara.
Clara’s expression hardened.
“Don’t.””
Thomas ignored her.
“Her.””
Daniel looked at Clara.
“What?””
Clara laughed.
“You expect them to believe you?””
Thomas looked at her.
“I don’t need them to believe me.””
He pulled a small device from his pocket.
“A recording.””
Clara’s face changed.
Rachel immediately understood.
“What did you record?””
Thomas looked at her.
“Everything.””
He pressed a button.
A voice filled the hallway.
Clara’s voice.
From years earlier.
“You need to disappear, Thomas. Emily is already convinced you’re dead.””
Everyone froze.
Then another voice.
A man.
“You take care of the boy.””
Clara.
“And the girl?””
The man answered.
“Separate them.””
Grace felt sick.
The recording stopped.
Nobody spoke.
Clara’s confidence was gone.
Daniel looked at her.
“You did this.””
Clara shook her head.
“No.””
But nobody believed her.
Grace looked at Thomas.
“Why didn’t you come back?””
His face changed.
Pain.
“I tried.””
“Then why didn’t you?””
“Because every time I got close, someone moved Emily and the children.””
Grace looked down at Leo.
“The children.””
Thomas nodded.
“Emily knew she couldn’t protect both babies alone.””
Rachel whispered:
“So she chose Vivian.””
Vivian closed her eyes.
Thomas looked at her.
“She saved Lily.””
Vivian nodded.
“She saved both of them.””
Daniel looked confused.
“Both?””
Thomas looked at him.
“Yes.””
Grace noticed.
“What do you mean?””
Thomas looked at Leo.
“Emily didn’t hide Lily because she was in danger.””
He paused.
“She hid Lily because Leo was.””
Grace felt her heart stop.
“Why?””
Thomas looked at Daniel.
“Because the people after them believed Leo carried the key.””
“The key to what?””
Thomas reached into his coat.
He pulled out a small envelope.
Emily’s handwriting.
Again.
Grace recognized it immediately.
“She left this for me,” Thomas said.
Daniel stared.
“How?””
“She gave it to someone before she died.””
Thomas looked at Grace.
“She wanted you to have it.””
Grace took the envelope.
Her hands shook.
Inside was one page.
Only a few lines.
She read aloud.
“Grace, if you are reading this, it means they found Leo.””
Her voice trembled.
“Do not trust the person who tells you they are protecting him.””
Everyone became still.
Grace continued.
“Do not trust the person who claims to be his family.””
Daniel looked hurt.
“Emily…”
Grace read the final lines.
“The truth is not who Leo’s father is.””
She looked up.
Everyone waited.
“The truth is who Leo’s father was trying to protect him from.””
Thomas looked at the paper.
“That’s why I came back.””
A sound came from outside.
Cars.
Multiple cars.
Thomas immediately looked toward the front entrance.
“They’re here.””
Daniel gripped the folder.
“Who?””
Thomas’s face hardened.
“The people who started this.””
Grace looked around.
“How do we stop them?””
Thomas looked at her.
“You don’t.””
A pause.
“You survive.””
The front doors exploded open.
Men rushed into the mansion.
Everyone moved.
Daniel grabbed Leo.
Thomas pushed Grace behind him.
Vivian grabbed Rachel’s arm.
Clara stood frozen.
Then one of the men stepped forward.
He looked older.
Powerful.
Familiar.
Grace stared.
Because she had seen him before.
In the photographs.
At the Harrington mansion.
On the walls.
The man smiled.
“Hello, Daniel.””
Daniel went pale.
“Father?””
Grace felt the world tilt.
Thomas whispered:
“That’s the man Emily was afraid of.””
Daniel’s father looked at Leo.
Then at Grace.
And smiled.
“The boy belongs to the Harrington family.””
Thomas stepped forward.
“No.””
The old man’s smile disappeared.
“Then you’re going to learn what happens when people try to steal what belongs to us.””
Grace looked at Leo.
At the baby who had exposed every secret.
And she finally understood.
The pool accident was never about hurting Leo.
It was about finding out whether the people protecting him would reveal themselves.
And they had.
The old man raised his hand.
The men moved forward.
Then Leo reached out.
Not toward Grace.
Not toward Daniel.
Toward Thomas.
The entire room froze.
Because the baby recognized the father he had never met.
And Thomas whispered:
“Emily was right.””
He looked at Grace.
“She knew you would be the one to save him.””
Then the old man said something that made everyone stop.
“Before you protect Leo…”
He smiled.
“Ask Grace why Emily chose her.””
Grace’s blood ran cold.
Because for the first time, everyone was looking at her.
And she realized the final secret had never been about Leo.
May you like
It was about her.
