Chapter 5: The Girl Who Knew Vivian’s Secret
The silence after the phone call felt heavier than any scream.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
The only sound in the nursery was Leo’s soft breathing.
Grace held him closer.
The little boy who had spent his entire life surrounded by secrets he never understood.
Daniel still held the phone against his ear, even though the call had already ended.
“Daddy.””
That word kept hanging in the air.
A child’s voice.
A child who knew him.
A child who knew Grace.
A child who knew Vivian.
Daniel slowly lowered the phone.
His face looked completely different.
Not confused.
Not shocked.
Terrified.
“Daniel,” Grace whispered.
He didn’t answer.
“Who was that?””
He looked at her.
“I don’t know.””
Grace frowned.
“That was a little girl.””
“I know.””
“She called you Daddy.””
Daniel looked away.
“I heard.””
Vivian stood near the doorway.
Silent.
Too silent.
Grace turned toward her.
“You knew.””
Vivian’s eyes lifted.
“What?””
“You knew that girl existed.””
Vivian shook her head.
“No.””
“Then why did she say you know where she is?””
Vivian opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Daniel noticed.
“Vivian.””
Her expression changed.
“Daniel, listen to me.””
“No.””
His voice was colder than Grace had ever heard.
“Answer the question.””
Vivian looked between them.
Then at Leo.
“I need to explain.””
Grace almost laughed.
“Explain?””
She stepped forward.
“You’ve been lying since the day you walked into this house.””
“That’s not true.””
“You knew about Emily’s daughter.””
“I knew Emily had secrets.””
“You recognized the picture.””
Vivian said nothing.
“That’s not a guess,” Grace continued.
“That’s recognition.””
Vivian’s jaw tightened.
“You don’t understand.””
“Then make me understand.””
For a moment, Vivian looked exhausted.
Not angry.
Not cruel.
Just tired.
Then the mask returned.
“You want the truth?””
Grace held her stare.
“Yes.””
Vivian took a slow breath.
“Emily wasn’t just hiding a daughter.””
Daniel looked at her.
“What are you saying?””
Vivian’s eyes moved toward the window.
“She was hiding from someone.””
“Who?””
Vivian looked back.
“Me.””
The room went still.
Daniel’s face hardened.
“What?””
Vivian shook her head quickly.
“No. Not like that.””
Grace stared.
“Then what does that mean?””
Vivian walked into the room.
“I knew Emily before she met you.””
Daniel froze.
“You knew her?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
Vivian hesitated.
“We worked together.””
Grace noticed the way she avoided saying where.
Or when.
“What kind of work?””
Vivian ignored the question.
“Emily trusted me.””
Grace felt a bitter laugh rise.
“Trusted you?””
Vivian looked down.
“She trusted me because I helped her.””
“With what?””
Vivian’s voice became quieter.
“With protecting her daughter.””
Daniel stepped back.
“You knew?””
Vivian looked at him.
“Yes.””
The answer hit harder than Grace expected.
Daniel’s face twisted with disbelief.
“You knew Emily had another child?””
“Yes.””
“And you never told me?””
“I couldn’t.””
“Couldn’t?””
Daniel’s anger finally broke through.
“You married me.””
“I know.””
“You moved into my house.””
“I know.””
“You lived with my son.””
“I know!””
Vivian’s voice cracked.
For the first time, she looked emotional.
“I know exactly what I did.””
Grace watched carefully.
Because the emotion looked real.
But that didn’t mean it was innocent.
“Where is she?”” Grace asked.
Vivian looked at her.
“I don’t know.””
“You expect us to believe that?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because if I knew, she wouldn’t be safe.””
Grace felt a chill.
“Safe from who?””
Vivian didn’t answer.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Who are you protecting her from?””
Vivian’s eyes filled with fear.
Then she whispered:
“The same person Emily was afraid of.””
Before anyone could ask more, the nursery door opened.
A sound.
A small movement.
Everyone turned.
Leo was sitting in Grace’s arms.
His eyes were fixed on something behind Vivian.
A shadow.
No.
Someone.
Grace’s heart raced.
“Who’s there?””
The hallway was empty.
Vivian immediately moved.
Too quickly.
She walked toward the door.
“Wait.””
Grace grabbed her arm.
Vivian turned.
“Let go.””
“No.””
For the first time, Grace saw anger.
Real anger.
“You have no idea what you’re dealing with.””
“Then tell me.””
“I’m trying to protect this family.””
Grace looked at her.
“By lying?””
Vivian pulled away.
“You think the truth is always better?””
“Yes.””
“No, it isn’t.””
Her voice dropped.
“Sometimes the truth gets people killed.””
The words made everyone stop.
Daniel stared.
“What did you say?””
Vivian looked like she regretted speaking.
Then the mansion lights suddenly flickered.
Once.
Twice.
The room went dark.
Leo started crying.
Grace held him tighter.
“Daniel?””
“I’m here.””
A loud noise came from downstairs.
Something breaking.
Everyone froze.
Then came footsteps.
Someone was inside the house.
Daniel moved toward the door.
“Stay here.””
Grace shook her head.
“I’m coming.””
“No.””
“Daniel.””
The sound came again.
A drawer opening.
Someone searching.
Vivian’s face changed.
She knew that sound.
“Who is it?”” Grace whispered.
Vivian didn’t answer.
Daniel looked at her.
“Who?””
Slowly, Vivian whispered:
“She found us.””
Grace’s blood ran cold.
“Who found us?””
Vivian looked toward the hallway.
“The woman who killed Emily.””
Nobody spoke.
Then a voice came from downstairs.
A woman’s voice.
Calm.
Confident.
“Vivian?””
Vivian went completely still.
The voice continued.
“You always were terrible at keeping secrets.””
Grace looked at Daniel.
He looked confused.
“Who is that?””
The woman called again.
“Come downstairs, Vivian.””
Then she added:
“I know you have Emily’s daughter.””
Grace’s breath caught.
The girl.
The phone call.
The secret.
It was all connected.
Daniel grabbed the fireplace poker beside the door.
“Stay behind me.””
They slowly moved downstairs.
The mansion felt unfamiliar.
Every shadow looked like someone hiding.
When they reached the bottom of the staircase, Grace saw a woman standing near the front door.
She looked around fifty years old.
Dark hair.
Expensive coat.
A calm smile.
Too calm.
Vivian stopped.
The woman looked at her.
“Well.””
She smiled.
“Look what you’ve done.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Who are you?””
The woman ignored him.
Her eyes moved to Grace.
Then to Leo.
And the smile disappeared.
“Emily really did leave him with you.””
Grace held Leo tighter.
“How do you know my name?””
The woman smiled again.
“Because Emily wrote about you.””
Grace froze.
The woman reached into her purse.
Pulled out a folded piece of paper.
And held it up.
“She wrote this the night before she died.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“What is that?””
The woman looked at him.
“The truth.””
Then she looked at Grace.
“Emily knew she was going to die.””
Grace felt her chest tighten.
“No.””
The woman’s eyes stayed on hers.
“And before she did, she wrote down the one thing she believed would protect both of her children.””
She unfolded the paper.
Then read the first line aloud.
“Grace Miller is the only person I trust with my son.””
Grace stopped breathing.
Because below that sentence was another line.
May you like
A line that changed everything.
*“If anything happens to me, do not let Daniel know the truth about Leo’s birth.””*
