Chapter 4: The Secret Emily Buried
Grace stared at the photograph until the words on the back blurred.
*“Leo has a twin sister.””*
The sentence didn’t feel real.
It looked like a cruel joke.
A mistake.
A lie someone had written to destroy everything she believed.
But the handwriting wasn’t a stranger’s.
Grace knew Emily’s handwriting.
She had seen it on birthday cards.
On notes left beside Leo’s crib.
On little reminders stuck to the kitchen refrigerator.
Emily’s handwriting was careful and elegant.
The kind of handwriting that looked like every word mattered.
And these words mattered more than anything.
Daniel reached for the photograph.
Grace almost pulled it away.
“Wait.””
Her voice was quiet.
She turned it over again.
The picture showed Emily standing in the hospital.
She looked exhausted but happy.
In her arms was newborn Leo.
Beside her stood another woman holding another baby.
The woman had the same eyes as the voice on the phone.
The same tired sadness.
“Who is she?”” Grace whispered.
Daniel didn’t answer.
He was staring at the photograph like it had opened a door he had spent years trying to keep locked.
“Daniel?””
His jaw tightened.
“I don’t know.””
Grace looked at him.
“You don’t know?””
“No.””
“You expect me to believe that?””
Daniel looked away.
“Emily showed me a picture once.””
The room went silent.
Grace’s heart sank.
“What?””
Daniel sat down on the edge of the bed.
“She showed me a photo when Leo was about three months old.””
“Of this woman?””
“Yes.””
“Who was she?””
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
“She told me it was someone from her past.””
Grace stepped closer.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel shook his head.
“I asked her.””
“And?””
“She said she wasn’t ready to explain.””
Grace looked back at the photograph.
“She had a daughter.””
Daniel didn’t respond.
That silence told her everything.
“You knew.””
“No.””
“You knew something.””
Daniel stood.
“I knew Emily was hiding something. I didn’t know this.””
Grace held up the picture.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because Emily asked me not to.””
Grace’s eyes narrowed.
“She asked you to keep secrets from everyone?””
“She was scared.””
The word stopped Grace.
“Scared of what?””
Daniel looked toward the door.
Then lowered his voice.
“Someone was following her.””
The air changed.
Grace slowly shook her head.
“Following her?””
“She received calls.””
“From who?””
“I don’t know.””
“You didn’t ask?””
“Of course I asked.””
Daniel’s voice cracked.
“She told me it wasn’t about her.””
He looked toward Leo’s crib.
“It was about the children.””
Grace felt a chill.
“The children?””
Daniel nodded.
“She believed someone wanted to take Leo.””
Grace looked down.
Everything suddenly connected.
The note.
The phone call.
The stroller.
Vivian.
But one question remained.
“Where is the girl?””
Daniel looked at the photograph.
“I don’t know.””
Grace looked at him sharply.
“You don’t know?””
“No.””
His voice was full of guilt.
“After Emily died, I searched through her things. I found nothing.””
“But she had a daughter.””
“I didn’t know if it was true.””
Grace stared at him.
“How could you not know?””
Daniel looked broken.
“Because Emily was already gone.””
For a moment, Grace saw something she had never seen before.
Not the wealthy businessman.
Not the powerful man everyone respected.
Just a husband who had lost his wife and never found the answers she left behind.
A small sound interrupted them.
A baby crying.
Leo.
Grace and Daniel rushed into the nursery.
Leo was awake.
His little hands moved desperately.
Grace picked him up.
“Hey, sweetheart.””
But Leo wasn’t looking at Grace.
He was looking past her.
Toward the doorway.
Toward Vivian.
She was standing there.
Watching.
Grace’s grip tightened.
“How long have you been there?””
Vivian didn’t answer.
Her eyes moved to the photograph in Grace’s hand.
And for the first time, Vivian looked truly afraid.
“What did you find?””
Daniel stepped forward.
“You knew.””
Vivian blinked.
“Knew what?””
“You knew about Emily’s daughter.””
The color drained from Vivian’s face.
Just for a moment.
Then she recovered.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.””
Grace held up the picture.
“Then explain this.””
Vivian looked at it.
Her lips parted.
A tiny breath escaped.
“That’s impossible.””
Grace noticed.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
“You know her.””
Vivian looked away.
“I said it’s impossible.””
Daniel moved closer.
“Who is she?””
Vivian’s eyes flicked toward him.
Then toward Leo.
Then back to the photograph.
“She was supposed to be gone.””
The words made Grace’s skin crawl.
“Gone?””
Vivian realized what she had said.
She immediately corrected herself.
“I mean… I thought she was gone.””
“Who is she?”” Daniel demanded.
Vivian didn’t answer.
Instead, she looked at Grace.
“You found the letter.””
It wasn’t a question.
Grace felt her stomach drop.
“How do you know about the letter?””
Vivian stayed silent.
Daniel’s voice became dangerous.
“Vivian.””
She swallowed.
“I knew Emily hid something.””
“Because?””
“Because I found her searching through the house years ago.””
Grace frowned.
“What?””
Vivian looked at her.
“Emily was looking for something before she died.””
“What?””
“A file.””
Daniel froze.
“What file?””
Vivian shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
Grace stared.
“You’re lying.””
Vivian’s eyes hardened.
“You think you know everything because Emily left you a letter?””
The room became silent.
Then Vivian stepped closer.
“She chose you because she knew you were easy to trust.””
Grace felt hurt more than angry.
“Why would Emily trust me?””
Vivian smiled sadly.
“Because she knew you would do anything for Leo.””
Grace looked at the baby in her arms.
Leo’s fingers wrapped around hers.
The same tiny hand that had pointed toward the window.
The same hand that had somehow led them to the truth.
“What happened to the girl?”” Grace asked.
Vivian looked away.
“I don’t know.””
“Where is she?””
“I said I don’t know.””
But Grace saw something.
A flicker.
A memory.
Vivian knew more.
Before Grace could push further, Daniel’s phone rang.
Everyone froze.
The number was unknown.
Daniel answered.
“Hello?””
No one spoke.
Then a child’s voice came through.
Small.
Soft.
A girl.
“Daddy?””
Daniel’s face changed.
Grace felt her heart stop.
The voice continued.
“Daddy, please don’t let her find me.””
Daniel gripped the phone.
“Who is this?””
The girl started crying.
“Mom said if anything happened to her, I should call Grace.””
Grace stepped closer.
The girl whispered:
“She told me Grace was the only person who would believe me.””
Daniel looked at Grace.
The same words again.
The same impossible connection.
Emily trusted her.
The call suddenly became clearer.
The girl spoke one last sentence.
And it shattered everything Grace thought she knew.
“Grace… Vivian knows where I am.””
The line went dead.
Nobody moved.
Then Leo suddenly reached out his tiny hand toward Vivian.
But this time, he wasn’t pointing.
May you like
He was pushing away.
And Vivian’s face turned completely white.
