Chapter 8: The Truth About Leo’s Father

Nobody looked away.

Nobody breathed.

Clara’s finger remained pointed.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

At Daniel.

Grace felt the room shift.

The kind of silence that came before something broke.

Daniel stared at Clara.

“That’s impossible.””

Clara smiled.

“Is it?””

“You’re lying.””

“Am I?””

She opened the folder again and pulled out another document.

“A DNA report.””

Daniel’s face hardened.

“I don’t care what you have.””

“You should.””

Clara stepped closer.

“Because Emily knew.””

Grace looked at the paper in Clara’s hand.

“Emily knew what?””

Clara looked at her.

“That Leo wasn’t Daniel’s biological son.””

The words felt like they hit the entire room at once.

Grace looked down at Leo.

The baby who had been at the center of every secret.

Every lie.

Every fight.

“No,” Daniel whispered.

Clara smiled.

“That’s what everyone says when the truth hurts.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“You expect me to believe you broke into my house, waved around a piece of paper, and suddenly everything changes?””

“No.””

Clara tilted her head.

“I expect you to believe your wife.””

She pulled another folded page from the folder.

“This was written by Emily.””

Grace’s heart stopped.

Another letter.

Another secret.

Daniel reached for it.

Clara pulled it back.

“Not yet.””

His eyes narrowed.

“What do you want?””

Clara looked at Leo.

“I want what was taken from me.””

Rachel immediately stepped forward.

“No.””

Clara looked at her sister.

“You always did love playing protector.””

Rachel’s voice was cold.

“And you always loved destroying people’s lives.””

Clara smiled.

“Interesting coming from someone who stole my daughter.””

Grace looked between them.

“Wait.””

Everyone stopped.

“Clara is Lily’s mother?””

Rachel nodded.

“Yes.””

“And Emily?””

Rachel looked down.

“She was trying to save Lily from Clara.””

Clara’s smile disappeared.

“Careful.””

Rachel didn’t move.

“You don’t get to rewrite what happened.””

Grace looked at Clara.

“What happened?””

Clara laughed softly.

“You really want the story?””

“Yes.””

For a moment, Clara studied her.

Then she nodded.

“Fine.””

She placed the folder on the table.

“Emily and I were raised by a father who believed children were possessions.””

Her voice became quieter.

“He taught us that family was about blood. About inheritance. About control.””

Grace listened.

“When Emily discovered what he was doing, she tried to expose him.””

Daniel frowned.

“Your father?””

Clara nodded.

“He had been manipulating records for years.””

She looked at Leo.

“Creating new identities. Hiding children from their real families.””

Grace felt sick.

“And Lily?””

Clara’s expression softened slightly.

“She was my daughter.””

A pause.

“And Emily took her.””

Rachel’s voice cut in.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

Rachel stepped forward.

“She rescued her.””

Clara’s eyes hardened.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””

“I know exactly what happened.””

Rachel looked at Grace.

“Clara wasn’t just involved in the records.””

She swallowed.

“She was part of the operation.””

Clara laughed.

“An operation?””

“Yes.””

Rachel’s voice shook.

“You used children.””

Clara’s expression turned cold.

“You think you’re better than me?””

The question hung in the air.

Grace looked at Vivian.

Then Rachel.

Then Daniel.

Everyone had a piece of the truth.

Everyone had hidden something.

But Leo was the one who paid for it.

Daniel looked at Clara.

“If you knew about Leo, why didn’t you come sooner?””

Clara looked at him.

“Because Emily hid him.””

“From me?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Clara smiled.

“Because she knew you weren’t his father.””

Daniel flinched.

Grace saw it.

Not anger.

Pain.

A man watching his entire life collapse.

“Who is?”” Daniel asked.

Nobody answered.

Then Clara looked at Vivian.

And smiled.

“Tell him.””

Vivian looked terrified.

Daniel turned.

“Vivian.””

She shook her head.

“No.””

“Tell me.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Daniel…”

“Tell me.””

The room went silent.

Vivian looked at Leo.

Then at Grace.

Then finally at Daniel.

“Leo’s father was…”

She stopped.

A sound came from the hallway.

A crash.

Everyone turned.

Someone was moving through the house.

Clara looked annoyed.

“Not now.””

Daniel frowned.

“Who else is here?””

Clara ignored him.

But Grace saw fear cross her face.

Real fear.

Then the nursery window shattered.

Glass exploded across the floor.

Grace screamed.

Daniel grabbed Leo.

Everyone dropped low.

A figure moved outside.

Then disappeared.

Rachel rushed to the window.

“They found us.””

Grace looked at her.

“Who?””

Rachel looked back.

“The people who started this.””

Clara suddenly looked less powerful.

Less certain.

Because she knew exactly who Rachel meant.

The mansion was no longer a place full of secrets.

It was a battlefield.

Daniel pulled everyone away from the window.

“We need to leave.””

“No,” Vivian said.

Everyone looked at her.

She was staring at the broken glass.

At the person outside.

“I know who they are.””

Daniel stared.

“Who?””

Vivian swallowed.

“The people Emily was running from.””

Grace looked at her.

“And you knew?””

Vivian closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

Daniel’s anger returned.

“How long?””

“Since before I married you.””

The confession broke something inside him.

“You married me knowing all of this?””

“I married you because Emily asked me to.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“My wife asked you to marry me?””

Vivian looked at him.

“No.””

A tear rolled down her face.

“She asked me to stay close to you.””

The room went silent.

Grace felt a chill.

“Why?””

Vivian looked at Leo.

“Because Emily believed someone would come back for him.””

Daniel stared.

“Someone like who?””

Vivian didn’t answer.

Instead, she walked to the folder Clara had dropped.

She opened it.

Pulled out the DNA report.

Then looked at Daniel.

“I need to tell you the truth.””

Everyone waited.

Vivian whispered:

“Leo’s biological father is not a stranger.””

She looked at Grace.

“He’s someone you trust.””

Grace felt her heart race.

Daniel’s face tightened.

“Who?””

Vivian closed her eyes.

Then she said:

“It’s…”

A sudden gunshot echoed outside.

Everyone froze.

The sound came from the front gate.

Then the mansion alarm started screaming.

Clara looked toward the door.

Her expression changed completely.

“They’re here.””

Daniel grabbed the folder.

“Who?””

Clara looked at him.

“The people who don’t want Leo’s identity revealed.””

Grace held onto Leo.

“Why?””

Clara stared at the baby.

“Because if the world finds out who his father really is…”

She paused.

“An entire empire falls.””

The lights went out.

The mansion disappeared into darkness.

And in the distance, someone called Grace’s name.

A voice she knew.

A voice that should not have been there.

“Grace.””

She turned.

A figure stood at the end of the hallway.

And the person stepped into the light.

Grace dropped the blanket she was holding.

May you like

Because the person standing there was impossible.

It was the man Emily had told everyone was dead.
