Chapter 2: The Name Hidden In The Blanket

Grace couldn’t move.

The hallway suddenly felt smaller.

The walls of the Harrington mansion, which had always seemed grand and beautiful, now felt like they were closing around her.

Daniel stood frozen near the staircase, Leo pressed against his chest.

In his other hand was the wet piece of paper.

Her name was written across it.

*GRACE MILLER.*

Not a similar name.

Not a mistake.

Her name.

“Where did you get that?”” Grace whispered.

Daniel looked at her.

“I was hoping you could tell me.””

His voice wasn’t angry.

That almost made it worse.

Grace stepped closer.

“I don’t know.””

Vivian appeared behind her.

The moment she saw the paper, her face changed.

Just for a second.

But Grace saw it.

A flash of panic.

Then it disappeared.

“What is that?”” Vivian asked.

Daniel looked at her.

“You tell me.””

Vivian’s eyes widened.

“Daniel, why would I know?””

“You were the one with Leo.””

The words hung in the air.

Grace watched Vivian carefully.

The woman who always had an answer suddenly had too many pauses.

“I was outside,” Vivian said.

“I already told you. I heard the splash.””

Daniel looked down at the paper.

“And this?””

“I don’t know.””

Grace stared at the note.

The edges were soaked.

The ink had slightly blurred.

But the name was still clear.

She reached out.

Daniel hesitated before handing it to her.

The paper felt strangely familiar.

Not because she recognized it.

Because of the handwriting.

Grace’s fingers tightened.

“What is it?”” Daniel asked.

She swallowed.

“I’ve seen this handwriting before.””

Vivian’s eyes narrowed.

“Where?””

Grace didn’t answer immediately.

Because suddenly she was back in another time.

Eight years earlier.

Before the mansion.

Before Leo.

Before Daniel.

Before Vivian.

A hospital room.

A woman with tired eyes holding a newborn baby.

A promise whispered in the dark.

Grace closed her eyes.

No.

That couldn’t be connected.

It wasn’t possible.

“Grace?””

Daniel’s voice pulled her back.

She opened her eyes.

“I don’t know what this means.””

Vivian crossed her arms.

“That’s convenient.””

Grace looked at her.

“What?””

Vivian tilted her head.

“You find a mysterious note with your name on it, and suddenly you remember nothing?””

Daniel frowned.

“Vivian.””

“No, Daniel, think about it.””

Her voice became softer.

More reasonable.

That was what made it dangerous.

“Grace has been with this family for years. She knows every room, every person, every routine.””

Grace stared at her.

“You think I did this?””

“I didn’t say that.””

“You’re saying it without saying it.””

Vivian sighed.

“I’m saying we need to consider every possibility.””

Daniel looked between them.

“Enough.””

But Grace noticed something.

Daniel wasn’t looking at Vivian.

He was looking at the note.

And he was afraid.

Not confused.

Afraid.

“Daniel,” Grace said quietly.

“Why are you scared of this paper?””

He didn’t answer.

The silence was the answer.

Leo suddenly started crying.

A different cry this time.

A tired one.

A baby who had experienced too much in one afternoon.

Daniel looked down immediately.

“I’m taking him upstairs.””

He walked away.

Grace watched him disappear.

Then she turned to Vivian.

“What are you hiding?””

Vivian gave a small laugh.

“I could ask you the same thing.””

Grace stepped closer.

“I know you moved that stroller.””

Vivian’s smile vanished.

“You don’t know anything.””

“I know the wheel was locked.””

For the first time, Vivian looked genuinely surprised.

Grace continued.

“I know it couldn’t have rolled by itself.””

The hallway became silent.

Vivian looked toward the staircase.

Then back at Grace.

“You should stop digging.””

“Why?””

“Because sometimes the truth hurts the person looking for it.””

Grace held her stare.

“And sometimes it hurts the person trying to hide it.””

For a moment, neither woman moved.

Then Vivian leaned closer.

“You really think you’re protecting Leo.””

Grace felt her stomach tighten.

“What does that mean?””

Vivian smiled.

“It means you don’t know everything about the child you’ve spent years caring for.””

The words struck harder than Grace expected.

Because there was one thing she had always believed.

Leo was the one person in the world she understood completely.

She knew his cries.

His fears.

His favorite songs.

His little expressions.

But now Vivian was suggesting there was something she didn’t know.

Something important.

Before Grace could respond, Vivian walked away.

Grace waited until she disappeared.

Then she quietly followed Daniel upstairs.

She found him in Leo’s nursery.

The room was painted soft blue.

A wooden rocking horse sat near the window.

Family photos covered the walls.

Daniel was sitting in the rocking chair, holding Leo.

The baby had finally fallen asleep.

Grace knocked softly.

Daniel looked up.

“Is he okay?””

“Yes.””

She stepped inside.

“Daniel, we need to talk.””

He looked tired.

“I know.””

“You know what that paper is?””

A long pause.

Then Daniel looked away.

“I know what it could be.””

Grace’s heart beat faster.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel placed Leo carefully in his crib.

Then he walked toward the window.

“Before Vivian came into our lives, before you started working here, there was something that happened.””

Grace waited.

Daniel’s hands tightened.

“Something involving Leo’s mother.””

Grace froze.

“Emily?””

His first wife.

The woman Grace had loved and respected.

The woman who had died after giving birth to Leo.

“What about Emily?””

Daniel looked at the floor.

“She left something behind.””

“A letter?””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“A secret.””

The room felt colder.

“What secret?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Grace stepped closer.

“Daniel.””

He finally looked at her.

“Emily wasn’t only Leo’s mother.””

Grace frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel took a deep breath.

“When Leo was born, there was a woman who came to the hospital.””

“Who?””

“A woman who claimed she knew Emily.””

Grace’s heart started pounding.

“What woman?””

Daniel looked toward the crib.

“Someone who said she had information about Leo.””

Grace stared.

“What kind of information?””

Daniel’s voice dropped.

“She said Leo wasn’t the only baby involved.””

Grace felt a chill run through her.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“I know.””

“Daniel, what are you saying?””

He looked at her.

“I’m saying Emily believed someone was trying to hide something about Leo’s birth.””

Grace looked down at the sleeping baby.

The baby she had protected for years.

The baby who had pointed toward the second-floor window.

The baby who had somehow carried a note with her name.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Daniel looked ashamed.

“Because Emily made me promise.””

“Promise what?””

“That I wouldn’t tell anyone unless something happened.””

Grace’s voice became quieter.

“Something happened today.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

A sound came from the hallway.

A floorboard creaked.

Both of them turned.

Nobody was there.

Grace walked toward the door.

“Did Vivian know about this?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

That was enough.

“She knew,” Grace whispered.

Daniel looked away.

“Vivian found Emily’s old files after we got married.””

Grace’s eyes widened.

“And you still married her?””

“I thought she was trying to help.””

“Help with what?””

Daniel looked at the closed door.

“I don’t know anymore.””

A sudden noise came from downstairs.

A phone ringing.

Daniel and Grace looked at each other.

The old landline.

Nobody used it anymore.

Slowly, Daniel walked downstairs.

Grace followed.

The phone continued ringing.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Daniel picked it up.

“Hello?””

At first, there was only silence.

Then a woman’s voice.

Weak.

Shaking.

Almost a whisper.

“Is Grace Miller there?””

Grace froze.

Daniel looked at her.

The voice continued.

“She needs to know the truth about what happened the night Leo was born.””

Grace stepped forward.

“Who is this?””

The woman hesitated.

Then she said four words that made Grace’s entire world collapse.

“I’m Emily Harrington.””

May you like

The phone slipped from Daniel’s hand.

And from upstairs, baby Leo began crying.
