Chapter 6: The Truth Hidden Before Leo Was Born
Grace read the sentence again.
Then again.
Her eyes moved across the paper, but her mind refused to accept the words.
*“If anything happens to me, do not let Daniel know the truth about Leo’s birth.””*
The paper trembled between the stranger’s fingers.
The entire mansion had gone silent.
Even Leo had stopped crying.
As if somehow, even the baby understood that the world around him was changing.
Daniel stared at the woman.
“What are you talking about?””
The woman folded the paper slowly.
Her calmness made her more frightening.
“Exactly what it says.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Who are you?””
The woman looked at him.
“My name is Rachel Vale.””
Vivian’s face went pale.
Grace noticed immediately.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
“You know her,” Grace said.
Vivian didn’t answer.
Rachel smiled.
“Of course she knows me.””
Daniel turned toward Vivian.
“Explain.””
Vivian looked trapped.
“I…”
Rachel interrupted.
“Vivian was there.””
The words landed like a stone.
“There for what?”” Daniel demanded.
Rachel looked at Leo.
“For the night he was born.””
Grace felt her heart tighten.
The hospital.
The birth.
The secrets.
Everything seemed to circle back to that one night.
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
Rachel tilted her head.
“You really never asked enough questions, did you?””
His expression hardened.
“What does that mean?””
“It means Emily tried to tell you.””
“She never told me anything.””
Rachel gave a sad smile.
“She tried.””
Daniel looked confused.
Grace watched him carefully.
For the first time, she wondered if Daniel wasn’t the person who knew the least.
Maybe he was the person who had been protected from the truth.
“What happened that night?”” Grace asked.
Rachel looked at her.
“Emily gave birth to two babies.””
The room went completely still.
Leo.
And the girl.
Grace already knew.
But hearing it spoken aloud felt different.
“She had twins,” Rachel continued.
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“No.””
His voice broke.
“No, Emily would have told me.””
Rachel’s expression softened.
“She wanted to.””
“Then why didn’t she?””
Rachel looked toward Vivian.
Because Vivian suddenly looked terrified.
“Because someone stopped her.””
Daniel turned.
“Vivian?””
Vivian closed her eyes.
“Daniel…”
“No.””
His voice was quiet now.
Almost dangerous.
“Tell me.””
Vivian looked like she was carrying something too heavy to hold anymore.
“I didn’t know what would happen.””
Grace stared.
“What does that mean?””
Vivian looked at her.
“I thought I was helping.””
Rachel laughed softly.
“Everyone always says that.””
Vivian’s eyes flashed.
“You don’t know what I went through.””
Rachel stepped closer.
“I know exactly what you did.””
Daniel looked between them.
“What did she do?””
Nobody answered.
Then Rachel spoke.
“She helped separate the twins.””
Daniel’s face went blank.
“No.””
Grace felt sick.
“What?””
Rachel looked at Leo.
“When Emily gave birth, both babies were healthy.””
She paused.
“Someone wanted one of them hidden.””
Daniel whispered:
“Why?””
Rachel looked at him.
“Because of the father.””
The room froze.
Grace looked at Daniel.
“What does that mean?””
Rachel didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, she looked at Vivian.
“Tell him.””
Vivian shook her head.
“No.””
“Tell him.””
“No.””
Rachel’s voice sharpened.
“After all these years, you still want to protect yourself?””
Vivian stepped back.
“I was trying to protect Emily.””
Daniel looked furious.
“You knew about this?””
Vivian’s eyes filled.
“I knew there was danger.””
“Danger from who?””
She looked at Rachel.
Then away.
“I didn’t know.””
Rachel smiled coldly.
“You knew enough.””
Grace felt overwhelmed.
Too many secrets.
Too many missing pieces.
She looked down at Leo.
The baby who had no idea his entire identity was being questioned.
“Where is his sister?”” Grace asked.
Rachel’s expression changed.
“She’s alive.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
A mixture of relief and pain crossed his face.
“Where?””
Rachel looked toward Vivian.
“That depends on whether she’s willing to tell the truth.””
Everyone turned.
Vivian stood completely still.
Grace stepped closer.
“Where is she?””
Vivian whispered:
“I don’t know.””
Rachel immediately shook her head.
“Lie.””
“I don’t know where she is now.””
“But you knew where she was.””
Vivian looked down.
Grace felt anger rising.
“You knew.””
Vivian finally looked at her.
“I knew where Emily sent her.””
“Where?””
Vivian’s eyes filled with tears.
“She was supposed to be somewhere safe.””
“Where?””
Vivian swallowed.
“With Emily’s sister.””
Daniel frowned.
“Emily had a sister?””
Grace looked at him.
Another secret.
Rachel nodded.
“She did.””
Daniel looked broken.
“I knew nothing about my own wife.””
Rachel’s voice softened.
“Because Emily was trying to protect you.””
“From what?””
Rachel looked toward the front door.
“From the people who wanted Leo.””
A cold feeling moved through Grace.
“Why would anyone want a baby?””
Rachel looked at Leo.
“Because Leo wasn’t supposed to be born.””
Nobody spoke.
Daniel stared.
“What?””
Rachel continued.
“Before Emily met you, she discovered something about her family.””
“What?””
“She discovered a financial crime.””
Daniel frowned.
“I don’t understand.””
“She found evidence that powerful people were using children’s identities for illegal transfers.””
Grace felt sick.
“What does that have to do with Leo?””
Rachel looked at her.
“Everything.””
She lowered her voice.
“Emily discovered that one of the children involved was connected to someone powerful.””
Daniel stared.
“Who?””
Rachel looked at him.
“You.””
Silence.
Daniel stepped back.
“What?””
Rachel shook her head.
“Not because you did anything.””
She paused.
“Because of your family.””
Grace remembered the Harrington name.
Old money.
Old connections.
A family everyone respected.
Rachel continued.
“Emily found documents showing that someone had used the Harrington family name to hide something.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“My father?””
Rachel didn’t answer.
That was enough.
Grace watched Daniel absorb the impossible.
Then Leo suddenly started crying.
Grace immediately held him.
“Shh.””
But Leo wasn’t crying because he was scared.
He was reaching.
Toward the window.
Again.
Grace looked.
The second-floor window.
The same place he had pointed before.
Rachel noticed.
Her face changed.
“What is he doing?””
Grace looked at her.
“He keeps pointing there.””
Rachel walked closer.
Slowly.
Almost afraid.
“The nursery window?””
Grace nodded.
Rachel whispered:
“No.””
“What?””
Rachel stared at the window.
“Emily told me something.””
Grace held her breath.
“What?””
Rachel looked at Leo.
“She said if Leo ever pointed toward the window…”
She stopped.
“Then it meant someone had found the hidden message.””
Grace felt a chill.
“What hidden message?””
Rachel didn’t answer.
Instead, she walked upstairs.
Everyone followed.
The nursery window was closed.
Locked.
Grace looked around.
“Where is it?””
Rachel stepped closer to the wall beside the window.
She ran her fingers along the wooden frame.
Then she pressed a small corner.
A hidden panel opened.
Inside was a tiny envelope.
Daniel stared.
“How many secrets did this house have?””
Rachel took out the envelope.
The name written on it made Grace’s heart stop.
Not Daniel.
Not Vivian.
Not Emily.
It said:
*For Leo.*
Rachel opened it carefully.
Inside was a single photograph.
Everyone leaned closer.
The picture showed two newborn babies.
One was Leo.
The other was a little girl.
But on the back of the photograph, Emily had written one final message.
Grace read it aloud.
Her voice shaking.
*“Leo and his sister were never the danger. The danger was the person who raised them.””*
Everyone slowly looked up.
At Vivian.
And Vivian whispered the one sentence that made Grace realize they had been wrong about everything.
“I didn’t raise the girl.””
May you like
She looked terrified.
“I saved her from her mother.””
