Chapter 9: The Truth Behind My Mother’s Death

I didn’t sleep.

Not that night.

Not the next.

Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the photograph.

My mother.

Alive.

Standing beside Thomas Sterling.

The woman I had mourned for twelve years had apparently existed in a world I knew nothing about.

A secret world.

A world my father had locked away.

By morning, I had only one question.

Why?

I found my father in his office.

He already knew why I was there.

“You saw Vanessa’s message.””

It wasn’t a question.

“Yes.””

He looked exhausted.

“Vivienne…”

“No.””

My voice was steady.

“No more protecting me.””

He looked away.

“Tell me everything.””

For a long time, he said nothing.

Then he opened the drawer of his desk.

Inside was a small box.

My mother’s.

He placed it in front of me.

“I kept this because I couldn’t let anyone find it.””

I opened it.

Inside were letters.

Hundreds of them.

My mother’s handwriting.

My heart stopped.

“She wrote these?””

“Yes.””

“To who?””

My father looked at the letters.

“To you.””

I looked up.

“What?””

“She wanted you to have them when you were old enough.””

I touched the first envelope.

My name was written on it.

My hands trembled.

“Why didn’t I get them?””

My father closed his eyes.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“The truth.””

I opened the first letter.

The paper was old.

The ink faded.

But her words were clear.

*My beautiful Vivienne,*

*If you are reading this, it means your father finally decided you deserved to know.*

I stopped.

My eyes filled.

I kept reading.

*I need you to understand something. Your father is not the villain everyone believes he is. But he is also not innocent.*

I looked at my father.

He didn’t look away.

The letter continued.

*The biggest mistake Adrian made was believing power could solve everything. He thought he could protect us by controlling every danger. But some truths cannot be hidden forever.*

My fingers tightened.

My mother knew.

She knew who my father was.

She knew what he had done.

But what?

I looked at him.

“What did you do?””

My father sat down.

“I made a choice.””

“What choice?””

“A choice that hurt people.””

The answer was painful because it sounded honest.

“I thought I was protecting my company.””

“And my mother?””

His eyes closed.

“I failed her.””

The words shocked me.

My father admitting failure felt impossible.

“She found out Richard Vale was working with Thomas Sterling.””

I frowned.

“Working together?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“To destroy me.””

I looked at the letters.

My mother had discovered it.

She had tried to expose them.

“And then?””

My father’s voice became quiet.

“Then she disappeared.””

I stared.

“Disappeared?””

“Yes.””

“Not died?””

“No.””

The room tilted.

“Dad.””

He looked at me.

“I lied.””

There it was.

The truth.

The thing I had been waiting for.

“I told you she died because I believed it was the only way to keep you safe.””

I felt tears fall.

“You let me mourn someone who was alive?””

“I thought she was dead.””

The words stopped me.

“What?””

My father looked broken.

“Vivienne, I searched for her for years.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because every person who looked for her disappeared.””

A cold silence filled the room.

“What happened to her?””

My father looked at the letters.

“We don’t know.””

Later that afternoon, Daniel and I met Vanessa.

I didn’t trust her.

But I needed answers.

She looked different from the woman in the photograph.

Less confident.

More tired.

“You hate me.””

I looked at her.

“I don’t know you.””

She nodded.

“That’s fair.””

“Why did you send me the messages?””

“Because I realized I was helping the wrong people.””

I almost laughed.

“Convenient.””

She accepted that.

“I deserve that.””

Daniel stood beside me.

“You used me.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Yes.””

The honesty surprised him.

“I was assigned to get information from you.””

My eyes narrowed.

“By who?””

She hesitated.

Then answered.

“Richard Vale.””

My father’s cousin.

The same name appearing everywhere.

“Why?””

“Because he believed your father ruined his life.””

I looked at her.

“And Thomas Sterling?””

“Was his partner.””

The puzzle finally began forming.

Two men.

Two families.

Years of revenge.

But there was still one missing piece.

“My mother.””

Vanessa’s expression changed.

“She was the only person who discovered everything.””

“What happened to her?””

Vanessa looked down.

“I don’t know.””

I believed her.

Not because I trusted her.

Because she looked afraid.

Before we left, Vanessa grabbed my arm.

“One more thing.””

I turned.

“What?””

Her voice lowered.

“Your mother didn’t disappear because of Richard.””

“Then who?””

Vanessa looked toward Daniel.

And Daniel’s face changed.

Because he knew the name before she said it.

“Thomas Sterling.””

My heart stopped.

“But Thomas was her ally.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

She whispered:

“He was the reason she vanished.””

I stared.

“That’s impossible.””

Vanessa stepped back.

“He wanted your father destroyed.””

A pause.

“And your mother was the only person standing between them.””

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A voice I hadn’t heard in twelve years filled the silence.

“Vivienne?””

I dropped the phone.

Because I knew that voice.

Everyone has a voice they remember.

Even after years.

Even after loss.

Even after believing someone was gone forever.

May you like

My mother whispered:

“I’m sorry it took me this long to come home.””
