Chapter 5: The Marriage I Never Knew
I stared at the photograph until my eyes hurt.
Daniel.
Outside a courthouse.
His face was unmistakable.
But the woman beside him was someone I had never seen before.
She was holding his arm.
Not casually.
Not accidentally.
Like she belonged there.
My first thought was denial.
My second was anger.
My third was fear.
Because I realized something terrifying.
I had spent three years defending a man I barely knew.
“Vivienne?””
My father’s voice pulled me back.
I looked up.
He was standing in the doorway.
I quickly locked my phone.
Too quickly.
My father noticed.
“Who was that?””
“Nothing.””
He didn’t believe me.
But he didn’t push.
Instead, he walked into the room and placed a cup of tea beside me.
“You don’t have to carry every secret alone.””
The sentence broke something inside me.
Because I had been doing exactly that.
Carrying.
Always carrying.
Carrying the insults.
Carrying the embarrassment.
Carrying Daniel’s excuses.
I picked up my phone.
Then handed it to him.
He studied the photograph.
His expression changed.
“Who is she?””
“I don’t know.””
Marcus entered behind him.
My father looked at him.
“Find out.””
Marcus nodded.
Within an hour, we had answers.
Her name was Vanessa Hart.
Twenty-nine years old.
A legal consultant.
And according to public records…
Daniel Sterling had hired her six months after our wedding.
My stomach twisted.
“Why would he hire her?””
Marcus looked uncomfortable.
“Because she represented him during a private legal matter.””
“What matter?””
He placed another document down.
A court filing.
My hands shook.
The words blurred.
Then I saw it.
*Paternity Agreement.*
I stopped breathing.
“No.””
My father looked at me.
“Vivienne.””
I looked at him.
“He has a child?””
Nobody answered.
Because they didn’t need to.
The silence was enough.
I stood up so fast the chair moved backward.
“No.””
I walked across the room.
“No, that’s not possible.””
My father approached carefully.
“Vivienne.””
“When?””
Marcus checked the file.
“Two years ago.””
Two years.
I did the math.
Two years ago, I was pregnant with my first child.
No.
I wasn’t.
I had suffered a miscarriage.
A painful memory I had rarely talked about.
Daniel had held me that night.
He had cried.
He had promised we would try again.
Then months later, I became pregnant with our daughter.
But during that time…
He had been hiding this?
My hands went to my stomach.
My daughter.
My innocent little girl.
I sat down.
Because my legs stopped working.
My father crouched in front of me.
“Look at me.””
I did.
“You are not responsible for someone else’s betrayal.””
I nodded.
But my heart didn’t believe him yet.
Because betrayal wasn’t just what someone did.
It was everything they made you believe.
That evening, I went back to the Sterling house.
Not because I wanted to.
Because I needed answers.
Daniel opened the door.
The moment he saw my face, he knew.
“What happened?””
I held up my phone.
His expression changed.
Just slightly.
But I saw it.
The fear.
“You know who she is.””
He didn’t answer.
“Daniel.””
He stepped back.
“Come inside.””
“No.””
My voice was cold.
“Tell me here.””
He looked around.
The house we had chosen together.
The house where I had built a life.
Where I had cooked dinner.
Where I had waited for him to come home.
Where I had believed I was safe.
“Vivienne…”
“Who is Vanessa Hart?””
His face went pale.
“Who told you?””
That was all I needed.
Not denial.
Not confusion.
A confession hidden inside a question.
I laughed quietly.
“I spent three years thinking I was paranoid.””
“Please listen.””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“I listened for three years.””
Daniel’s eyes filled with regret.
“Everything I did was because I was scared.””
“Scared?””
“Yes.””
“Of what?””
He looked away.
And that hurt more.
“Daniel.””
Finally, he whispered:
“She knew about my family.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“Vanessa knew things about the Sterlings.””
“That doesn’t answer my question.””
He ran a hand through his hair.
“I made mistakes before I met you.””
I stared.
“How big?””
Silence.
Then:
“She had information about my father’s business.””
My heart sank.
“You’re avoiding the question.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“I had a relationship with her.””
The world became quiet.
I felt strangely calm.
“How long?””
“A few months.””
“When?””
He didn’t answer.
I already knew.
“Before me?””
He looked down.
“Daniel.””
“After.””
The word destroyed whatever hope remained.
After.
While we were married.
While I was carrying his child.
While I defended him.
I stepped backward.
“You cheated on me.””
His voice broke.
“Yes.””
I looked at him.
“And the ring?””
“I didn’t steal it.””
“Did you know about it?””
He hesitated.
A second.
That was enough.
My eyes burned.
“You knew.””
“I didn’t know they would accuse you.””
“But you knew something would happen.””
Daniel looked devastated.
“I was trying to fix it.””
“Fix what?””
He didn’t answer.
I turned away.
Because suddenly, the entire wedding made sense.
The accusation.
The setup.
The panic.
Someone wanted the Sterling family exposed.
But why use me?
Why destroy me?
As I reached my car, Daniel called my name.
“Vivienne.””
I stopped.
He said something that made my blood run cold.
“The woman who called you…”
I turned.
“What about her?””
Daniel looked terrified.
“She wasn’t trying to help you.””
My heart sank.
“Then what was she doing?””
Daniel swallowed.
“She was warning you because she knows what happens next.””
A cold wind passed between us.
“What happens next?””
Daniel looked toward the dark house behind him.
May you like
Then whispered:
“My family doesn’t let people leave.””
