Chapter 10: The Truth We Chose to Keep

For twelve years, I had imagined my mother’s voice.

Sometimes in dreams.

Sometimes when I was alone.

Sometimes during moments when I needed advice from the one person who always seemed to know exactly what to say.

I had imagined she would sound older.

Different.

Changed by time.

But when she said my name, she sounded exactly the same.

And that somehow hurt more.

“Vivienne?””

I couldn’t speak.

My hand covered my mouth.

The room disappeared.

No father.

No Daniel.

No Vanessa.

No secrets.

Just me.

A little girl waiting for her mother to come home.

“Mom?””

The word came out broken.

There was silence on the other end.

Then a quiet sob.

“Yes.””

My knees almost gave out.

Daniel reached for me, but I stepped away.

Not because I hated him.

Because this moment belonged to me.

“Where are you?””

Another pause.

“I’m close.””

“Close?””

“I’ve been close for a long time.””

The words made my heart ache.

“Then why didn’t you come back?””

I heard her breathe.

“Because every time I tried, someone stopped me.””

My eyes moved toward my father.

He looked like he already knew.

“Who?””

My mother didn’t answer immediately.

Then she whispered:

“Everyone you think protected you.””

The line went silent.

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

And the worst part was…

I didn’t know who she meant.

My father didn’t try to stop me when I told him I was going to see her.

That frightened me.

A man like Adrian Vale always had a plan.

Always had a solution.

Always knew the next move.

But this time, he simply said:

“She deserves to explain.””

Not defend.

Not justify.

Explain.

Maybe because he knew there was nothing he could say.

The location my mother sent was an old house outside the city.

Small.

Quiet.

Nothing like the world I grew up in.

When the car stopped, I couldn’t move.

My entire life had been built around an absence.

A missing person.

A missing piece.

And now she was behind that door.

My father stood beside me.

“I’ll wait here.””

I looked at him.

“You’re not coming?””

He shook his head.

“No.””

For the first time, I understood.

This wasn’t his story.

It was hers.

I walked to the door.

And knocked.

It opened almost immediately.

Then everything stopped.

My mother stood there.

Older.

Lines around her eyes.

Gray mixed into her hair.

But still my mother.

The same eyes.

The same smile.

The same expression she had when I was a child and came home crying after falling off my bicycle.

“Vivienne.””

I broke.

Not elegantly.

Not quietly.

I stepped forward, and she wrapped her arms around me.

For a moment, I was eight years old again.

For a moment, nothing had been lost.

Then reality returned.

And I pulled away.

“Why?””

Her face fell.

“I know.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“You don’t know.””

She nodded.

“Tell me.””

I looked at her.

“Tell me why you let me believe you were dead.””

Tears filled her eyes.

“Because I thought I was.””

I froze.

“What?””

She invited me inside.

“I need you to understand what happened.””

We sat across from each other.

Twelve years of questions between us.

“My disappearance started with Thomas Sterling.””

I looked at her.

“Everyone said he was helping you.””

“He was.””

That surprised me.

“Then why did Vanessa say he caused it?””

My mother looked down.

“Because both things were true.””

I waited.

“Thomas helped me discover Richard Vale’s crimes.””

She took a breath.

“But Thomas wasn’t a good man.””

The words were painful.

“He wanted justice.””

She looked at me.

“Then revenge.””

I listened.

“After Richard’s betrayal was exposed, Thomas wanted to destroy your father.””

“Why?””

“Because Adrian ruined his life.””

I frowned.

“My father didn’t.””

“No.””

My mother’s answer was immediate.

“But Thomas believed he did.””

She looked toward the window.

“Your father and Thomas were both brilliant men.””

A sad smile appeared.

“And brilliant men can be very dangerous when they believe they are right.””

“What happened between them?””

My mother looked at me.

“They fought.””

“That’s it?””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“They destroyed each other.””

My mother explained everything.

The company war.

The betrayal.

The lies.

Richard Vale manipulating both families.

Thomas blaming my father.

My father blaming Thomas.

And everyone losing sight of the truth.

But there was one thing I still didn’t understand.

“Why did you stay away from me?””

Her eyes filled.

“Because Richard knew about you.””

A chill moved through me.

“What?””

“He knew you were Adrian’s daughter.””

“So?””

“He threatened you.””

The room became cold.

“He told me if I returned, he would destroy everything your father loved.””

I swallowed.

“My father?””

“No.””

She looked at me.

“You.””

The answer broke something inside me.

Because suddenly, I understood.

My father had hidden the truth because he was afraid.

My mother had stayed away because she was afraid.

Everyone had made choices out of fear.

And I had been the person carrying the consequences.

“I hated you,” I whispered.

My mother closed her eyes.

“I know.””

“I spent years thinking you left me.””

“I know.””

“I thought I wasn’t important enough.””

Her face collapsed.

“Vivienne.””

“I thought everyone leaves eventually.””

She reached for my hand.

“But I never left you.””

I cried.

Because I believed her.

And somehow, that made it harder.

When I returned to my father’s house, everyone was waiting.

Daniel.

My father.

Marcus.

Even Eleanor.

The woman who had started this entire nightmare.

My mother entered behind me.

The room froze.

Eleanor looked like she had seen a ghost.

“Elizabeth.””

My mother looked at her.

“Eleanor.””

They knew each other.

Of course they did.

Everyone knew each other.

Except me.

Eleanor looked away.

“I thought you were dead.””

My mother smiled sadly.

“So did my daughter.””

The guilt on Eleanor’s face was immediate.

Then she looked at me.

“Vivienne…”

I raised a hand.

“Don’t.””

For once, she listened.

My father stepped forward.

“Everything ends today.””

Marcus placed a final folder on the table.

“We found the remaining evidence.””

Everyone looked at him.

“Richard Vale and Thomas Sterling worked together to manipulate both families for years.””

Daniel frowned.

“But Thomas is dead.””

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.””

The room went silent.

“Richard continued the plan after his death.””

My mother looked shocked.

“What plan?””

Marcus opened the folder.

“The Sterling family collapse. The Vale family scandal. The wedding accusation.””

He looked at me.

“Everything was designed to trigger a war between the families.””

“And why?””

My father answered.

“Because while we destroyed each other…”

He looked at the documents.

“Richard would take control of everything.””

A simple plan.

A cruel plan.

A patient plan.

My mother whispered:

“He waited twenty years.””

My father nodded.

“And almost succeeded.””

Months later, the Sterling empire collapsed.

Not because my father destroyed them.

Because the truth did.

The evidence cleared my name.

Eleanor faced the consequences of her actions.

Chloe apologized.

A real apology.

Not the kind people give when they are caught.

The kind they give when they finally understand the damage they caused.

I accepted it.

But forgiveness did not mean forgetting.

Daniel and I separated.

Not with screaming.

Not with revenge.

Just honesty.

He admitted he had spent his life trying to please people who never deserved it.

And I admitted I had spent mine trying to prove I was worthy of love.

We both needed to learn something.

Love was not sacrifice.

Love was not silence.

Love was not surviving someone.

It was choosing someone.

Every day.

My daughter was born three weeks later.

A healthy baby girl.

I named her Lily.

Because flowers grow even after storms.

My mother held her first.

My father cried when he thought nobody noticed.

Daniel stood in the doorway for a long time.

Then he smiled.

A real smile.

And for the first time in years, there was no pain between us.

Only acceptance.

A year after the wedding that destroyed my old life, I returned to the ballroom where everything began.

The same place.

The same walls.

But I was different.

I stood beneath the same white roses.

Not as a woman accused.

Not as someone’s wife.

Not as Adrian Vale’s daughter.

Just Vivienne.

My own person.

My father joined me.

“You okay?””

I smiled.

“Yes.””

He looked around.

“Funny.””

“What?””

“This was the night everyone thought they were exposing you.””

I laughed softly.

“And instead?””

He looked at me.

“They exposed themselves.””

I looked down at my daughter sleeping in my arms.

The ring.

The accusations.

The betrayal.

The secrets.

All of it had led here.

To this moment.

I once thought losing everything meant losing my family.

I was wrong.

Sometimes losing the life you built is the only way to discover the truth about the people standing beside you.

My father took my hand.

My mother stood on my other side.

And for the first time in twelve years…

We were together.

The Sterling family wanted to break me.

They wanted to prove I was nothing without my name.

Without my money.

Without my father.

But they made one mistake.

They never understood what they were really fighting.

They weren’t fighting Adrian Vale’s daughter.

They were fighting the woman who survived them.

May you like

And that woman…

was finally free.
