Chapter 3: The Enemy Inside the Family
The ballroom became silent again.
But this silence was different.
Before, everyone had been waiting for me to be exposed.
Now everyone was waiting to see who had actually done it.
The security officer enlarged the image.
The figure became clearer.
A man in a dark suit.
Walking into the bridal suite.
Holding a black velvet box.
Daniel stared at the screen.
“No.””
My eyes moved to him.
“You know him?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
That was enough.
My father noticed.
“Daniel.””
My husband looked trapped.
“It’s my uncle.””
Eleanor’s face changed instantly.
“Don’t say another word.””
The command came so quickly that everyone noticed.
My father turned toward her.
“Interesting.””
Eleanor forced a smile.
“This is a family matter.””
“No,” my father replied.
“This became my daughter’s matter when you accused her.””
The security team continued reviewing the footage.
Minutes passed.
Then another image appeared.
The man entered the suite.
Five minutes later, Chloe entered.
Then the screen showed something else.
The man leaving.
The box was gone.
Chloe looked terrified.
“I didn’t know.””
Everyone looked at her.
“You didn’t know what?”” I asked.
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
My father stepped closer.
“Answer her.””
Chloe looked at Eleanor.
That small movement revealed everything.
Her mother knew.
Maybe not every detail.
But enough.
Eleanor sighed.
“You’re making a mistake.””
I stared at her.
“A mistake?””
“Yes.””
She lifted her chin.
“You think money changes everything?””
I looked around the room.
“At least money didn’t make me cruel.””
Her expression tightened.
For the first time, Eleanor had no elegant response.
Because she knew.
Everyone knew.
The accusation against me had never been about the ring.
The ring was just an opportunity.
An excuse.
A reason to put me back in the place they believed I belonged.
Below them.
Daniel walked toward me.
“Vivienne.””
I didn’t move.
“I’m sorry.””
The words sounded empty.
Maybe because they came too late.
“I should have believed you.””
“Yes.””
He looked surprised by my answer.
I continued.
“You should have.””
His face fell.
Because there was no anger in my voice.
Only truth.
“I spent three years waiting for you to choose me.””
Daniel whispered:
“I love you.””
I looked at him.
“Love isn’t what you say when everything is easy.””
The room stayed quiet.
“Love is what you do when someone is standing alone and everyone else is against them.””
Daniel had no answer.
My father placed the evidence folder into my hands.
“Vivienne.””
I looked down.
Inside were documents.
Not about the ring.
About the Sterling family.
“What is this?””
My father’s expression changed.
“Everything you refused to investigate.””
I looked at the pages.
Financial records.
Company reports.
Legal documents.
My eyebrows pulled together.
“What does this mean?””
My father looked toward Eleanor.
“She knew exactly who you were.””
My blood went cold.
“What?””
Eleanor’s face turned pale.
My father continued.
“She knew before you married Daniel.””
Daniel looked shocked.
“Mom?””
I looked at Eleanor.
“You knew?””
She didn’t deny it.
That hurt more than I expected.
Because suddenly, every insult had a different meaning.
Every cruel comment.
Every reminder that I was “not enough.””
She knew I was Adrian Vale’s daughter.
She knew exactly who she was attacking.
And she did it anyway.
“Why?”” I asked.
Eleanor’s expression hardened.
“Because I wanted my son to marry someone respectable.””
I almost couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“You knew my family.””
“I knew your father’s company.””
“And still?””
She looked away.
“You were pretending to be ordinary.””
I laughed softly.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was unbelievable.
“I wasn’t pretending.””
I touched my wedding ring.
“I was trying to build a life where someone loved me for me.””
Daniel looked devastated.
But I was done searching his face for answers.
My father stepped forward.
“Vivienne.””
I nodded.
“I’m ready.””
As we walked toward the doors, I heard Chloe behind me.
“Vivienne.””
I stopped.
She sounded different.
Smaller.
Not the powerful bride who had screamed in front of everyone.
Just a frightened woman.
“I really didn’t steal it.””
I looked back.
For a moment, I believed her.
Then I saw Eleanor standing behind her.
Watching.
Waiting.
And I understood something.
Chloe had not been the mastermind.
She had simply been the easiest person to manipulate.
I turned away.
Outside the ballroom, the night air hit my face.
For the first time in years, I could breathe.
But before I reached the waiting car, my father’s phone rang.
He answered.
Listened.
Then his expression changed.
“Say that again.””
A pause.
He looked at me.
“Are you sure?””
Another pause.
Then he lowered the phone.
“Vivienne…”
Something in his voice made my stomach tighten.
“What?””
My father looked back toward the wedding hall.
“The ring was never stolen.””
I frowned.
“Then where was it?””
May you like
His answer made my entire body go cold.
“Someone planted it in your belongings before the reception even started.””
