Chapter 8: The Woman Who Knew Too Much
I couldn’t breathe.
My mother.
The woman who had been gone for twelve years.
The woman whose perfume I still remembered.
The woman whose voice I could still hear when I was afraid.
Standing beside Thomas Sterling.
Alive.
Together.
My hands shook.
No.
That wasn’t possible.
My mother died.
Everyone told me she died.
My father told me.
The doctors told me.
The world told me.
But the photograph in my hand told a different story.
I called my father immediately.
He answered on the second ring.
“Vivienne?””
I couldn’t speak.
“Vivienne, what happened?””
I sent him the photo.
The response took less than a minute.
*Where did you get this?*
My heart sank.
Because he didn’t say it was fake.
I called him.
“Dad.””
Silence.
Then:
“Come home.””
When I arrived, my father was standing in his office.
The same office where he made decisions that affected thousands of people.
But today, he looked lost.
“You knew.””
My voice was quiet.
He closed his eyes.
“Vivienne.””
“You knew my mother was connected to Thomas.””
“Yes.””
The word hurt.
Not because he admitted it.
Because he had hidden it.
“How much have you kept from me?””
He looked at me.
“More than I should have.””
I felt tears forming.
“Why?””
“Because I wanted to protect you.””
“Everyone says that.””
My voice broke.
“Everyone says they’re protecting me while they lie to me.””
My father looked devastated.
And that almost made it worse.
Because I loved him.
I trusted him.
“You deserve the truth.””
“Yes.””
He nodded.
“Your mother didn’t die because of an accident.””
The room went silent.
“What?””
My father walked to his desk.
Pulled out a file.
“I never told you because I didn’t have proof.””
I opened the folder.
Inside were investigation reports.
Photographs.
Documents.
My mother’s name.
“Your mother discovered something.””
“What?””
My father looked at the old photograph.
“Thomas wasn’t stealing from me.””
I looked up.
“What?””
“He was trying to expose someone else.””
My mind spun.
“Then why did you say he betrayed you?””
“Because I believed he had.””
My father sat down.
“Vivienne, I was young. Angry. Powerful. I thought I understood everything.””
“And you didn’t.””
“No.””
The admission shocked me.
“I didn’t.””
I read the documents.
Thomas and my mother had been investigating financial crimes.
Not against Vale Global.
Against someone inside it.
“Who?””
My father hesitated.
That hesitation terrified me.
“Dad.””
He whispered:
“My closest advisor.””
The name meant nothing to me.
But my father’s expression told me everything.
“Who?””
He looked at me.
“Richard Vale.””
I froze.
“Vale?””
“My cousin.””
Another piece moved into place.
Richard Sterling.
Richard Vale.
Two families.
Two betrayals.
One hidden connection.
Daniel came that night.
When he heard about the photograph, he went silent.
“My father and your mother?””
I nodded.
He sat down.
“My father always said there was someone controlling everything.””
“Who?””
“He never told me.””
I looked at him.
“Daniel.””
He looked ashamed.
“I know I should have told you more.””
“Yes.””
“I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
“That if I lost my family and you found out the truth, I would lose you too.””
I stared at him.
“You were already losing me.””
His eyes filled.
“I know.””
For once, he didn’t defend himself.
And somehow, that made it harder.
Because I could see the man I had loved.
Buried beneath all the choices that hurt me.
“Why did you marry me?””
The question escaped before I could stop it.
Daniel looked at me.
“Because I loved you.””
“Did you?””
“Yes.””
“Even knowing my father?””
“I didn’t know.””
I studied his face.
For the first time, I believed him.
But belief wasn’t forgiveness.
Not yet.
Marcus entered the room.
“We found something.””
Everyone looked at him.
He placed a tablet on the table.
“Security footage from the night before the wedding.””
The video played.
A person entered the Sterling house.
Carrying documents.
Not a ring.
Documents.
The person removed a file from Eleanor’s office.
Then placed something inside my bag.
My breath stopped.
“Who is that?””
Marcus paused the video.
The face appeared.
I recognized her.
Vanessa Hart.
Daniel’s former lover.
Daniel stood.
“No.””
My father looked at him.
“You knew her.””
Daniel shook his head.
“I didn’t know she was involved.””
The video continued.
Vanessa placed the documents inside my bag.
Not the ring.
Documents.
Marcus enlarged the image.
A name appeared on the file.
My heart stopped.
Because it wasn’t Vale.
It wasn’t Sterling.
It was my mother’s name.
The documents were about her.
My phone buzzed.
A message.
From Vanessa.
*You finally found the truth.*
Another message followed.
*Now ask your father why your mother was alive for three years after he told you she died.*
I dropped the phone.
Because suddenly, the question wasn’t who betrayed me.
May you like
It was worse.
Who had been protecting the lie?
