Chapter 6: The Family That Never Forgave
I should have been afraid.
Maybe I was.
But something inside me had changed.
Fear belonged to the woman who entered the Sterling family three years ago.
The woman who thought kindness could earn respect.
The woman who believed if she tried hard enough, everyone would eventually see her heart.
That woman was gone.
I looked at Daniel.
“What does that mean?””
He looked exhausted.
“It means you don’t know what my family is capable of.””
I almost smiled.
“Daniel.””
He looked at me.
“I know exactly what your family is capable of.””
I got into the car.
And I left him standing there.
The next morning, my father’s team uncovered more information.
The Sterling family wasn’t just wealthy.
They were desperate.
Their companies had been losing money for years.
The wedding wasn’t only a celebration.
It was a strategy.
Chloe’s marriage connected them to another wealthy family.
The ring was supposed to symbolize power.
But behind the scenes, the Sterling empire was collapsing.
And then there was me.
The daughter of Adrian Vale.
The person they never wanted to respect.
The person they secretly needed.
Marcus placed the files in front of me.
“They planned to use your relationship with Daniel.””
I frowned.
“How?””
“They expected you to eventually merge assets.””
I looked at the documents.
“So they didn’t want me.””
“No.””
Marcus paused.
“They wanted access.””
The words hurt.
Because deep down, I already knew.
My father entered the room.
“Vivienne.””
I looked up.
“Yes?””
“Daniel is here.””
My heart tightened.
“I don’t want to see him.””
My father nodded.
Then paused.
“He brought proof.””
I frowned.
“What kind of proof?””
“He says he knows who planned everything.””
I almost refused.
Almost.
But curiosity won.
“Bring him in.””
Daniel entered five minutes later.
He looked different.
Not physically.
Something else.
Like the confidence had disappeared.
He sat across from me.
“I know you don’t forgive me.””
“No.””
He nodded.
“I deserve that.””
I waited.
He placed a folder on the table.
“This is everything.””
I opened it.
Emails.
Bank records.
Messages.
The first page had Eleanor’s name.
My stomach tightened.
“What is this?””
“Your mother-in-law wasn’t trying to find the ring.””
I looked at him.
“What was she trying to do?””
Daniel swallowed.
“She was trying to destroy your reputation.””
I turned the pages.
The plan was clear.
The accusation.
The public search.
The humiliation.
They wanted a video.
A story.
A scandal.
A billionaire’s daughter caught stealing from the family she married into.
They wanted people to believe I was greedy.
Unstable.
Unworthy.
I felt sick.
“Why?””
Daniel looked ashamed.
“Because they thought if your father saw you as a problem, he would cut you off.””
I looked up.
“They wanted me disowned?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
His voice became quiet.
“Because they believed you were the only person who could save them.””
The room went silent.
My entire marriage suddenly looked different.
The dinners.
The questions about my father.
The casual interest in my family.
It was never curiosity.
It was research.
I closed the folder.
“Who gave them the idea?””
Daniel hesitated.
Then looked at me.
And I knew.
There was one more secret.
“Daniel.””
He whispered:
“It wasn’t my mother.””
My eyebrows pulled together.
“Then who?””
He looked terrified.
“The person who has been controlling the Sterling family for years.””
“Who?””
Daniel opened his mouth.
Then stopped.
Because his phone started ringing.
The screen lit up.
One name appeared.
Eleanor.
Daniel answered.
“Mom?””
Her voice was loud enough that I could hear part of it.
“Where are you?””
Daniel stood.
“I’m with Vivienne.””
A pause.
Then Eleanor said something that made his face lose all color.
“What?””
He listened.
Then slowly looked at me.
“Mom said…”
“What?””
His voice barely came out.
“She said if I tell you the truth…”
The call went silent.
Daniel stared at the phone.
Then whispered:
“She’ll tell you who your real enemy is.””
I felt a chill.
“Daniel.””
He looked at me.
“She knows something about you.””
Before I could respond, my phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
A message appeared.
One sentence.
*You think the Sterling family is your enemy because you don’t know what your father did to mine.*
I stared at the screen.
Then another message arrived.
A photograph.
A younger version of my father.
May you like
Standing beside a man I had never seen before.
A man who looked exactly like Daniel.
