Chapter 8: The Missing Three Years

The police took David away.

They searched the house.

They photographed the gun.

They collected the red box.

But none of it felt real.

I sat in the living room with Sarah beside me.

Emma was asleep against her.

For the first time in three years, my daughter had her mother's arms around her.

I watched them.

Sarah stroked Emma's hair.

Every few seconds, she kissed the top of her head.

Emma never woke.

I whispered, “Tell me everything.””

Sarah looked at me.

“I will.””

“No more secrets.””

She nodded.

“No more.””

Claire sat across from us.

Margaret had gone to make tea.

Sarah took a deep breath.

“Three years ago, I discovered the research program.””

“The one involving Emma?””

“Yes.””

She looked at our daughter.

“David's foundation had been collecting genetic material from patients without their knowledge.””

“How?””

“Routine blood tests. Fertility screenings. Prenatal testing.””

I remembered the hospital.

The strange documents.

The altered records.

“The baby switch.””

Sarah nodded.

“David wanted legal control over certain children.””

“Why Emma?””

“Because she had a genetic marker they hadn't seen before.””

“From me?””

“From both of us.””

I rubbed my forehead.

“So David paid someone to take her.””

“Not exactly.””

Sarah's eyes filled with shame.

“The person who helped him was Vanessa.””

I stared.

“But you said Vanessa wasn't involved.””

“I'm talking about the real Vanessa.””

I didn't understand.

Sarah explained.

“Vanessa was David's daughter.””

My heart sank.

“She worked for him.””

“At first.””

“What changed?””

“She found out what he was doing.””

“And she tried to stop him.””

“Yes.””

“Then what happened?””

Sarah looked down.

“David threatened her.””

“With what?””

“With you.””

I stared at her.

“Me?””

“He knew Vanessa loved you.””

I couldn't speak.

Sarah continued.

“She came to me because she believed we could expose him together.””

“What about the woman who replaced her?””

“Mara was David's employee.””

“She looks like Vanessa.””

“Close enough.””

“Then where was Vanessa?””

Sarah's silence answered before her words did.

“She was killed.””

I closed my eyes.

“By David?””

“Yes.””

I looked at Claire.

She nodded.

“Sarah found Vanessa's body the night before the crash.””

I felt sick.

“Then why was I told Sarah died?””

“Because David needed someone to take Sarah's place.””

I looked at my wife.

“And Mara became Vanessa.””

Sarah nodded.

“She had access to your home.””

“She knew everything about me.””

“She had been studying you for months.””

I remembered the first time I met Vanessa.

The first dinner.

The wedding.

The honeymoon.

The little things that suddenly seemed sinister.

I whispered:

“How did she know how Vanessa laughed?””

“She had recordings.””

“How did she know our private memories?””

“Mara had access to Vanessa's phone.””

I felt a chill.

“So the woman I lived with…”

“Wasn't your wife.””

“She hurt Emma.””

Sarah nodded.

“She wanted Emma afraid.””

“Why?””

“So Emma would depend on her.””

I looked at my daughter.

“And you?””

“They wanted me to disappear.””

“Why didn't they kill you?””

“Because they needed me.””

“For what?””

Sarah hesitated.

“They wanted me to cooperate.””

“With the research?””

“Yes.””

I stared at her.

“What did they do to you?””

She didn't answer.

“Sarah.””

She looked away.

“Three years is a long time.””

I reached for her hand.

“Tell me.””

Her fingers trembled.

“They moved me between facilities.””

“Facilities?””

“Private clinics.””

“For tests?””

“Yes.””

I felt rage burning through me.

“Did they hurt you?””

Sarah's eyes filled with tears.

“Sometimes.””

I squeezed her hand.

“I should have found you.””

“You couldn't.””

“I should have known.””

“You trusted the wrong person.””

I looked at her.

“Mara.””

Sarah nodded.

“And David.””

“And Claire?””

Sarah looked at Claire.

“Claire saved my life.””

I turned.

“Then why did the phone call tell me not to trust her?””

Sarah's expression changed.

“It wasn't me.””

“I know.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“Daniel, I mean something else.””

“What?””

“The call wasn't fake.””

I stared at her.

“You're saying you told me not to trust Claire?””

“Yes.””

My blood ran cold.

Sarah leaned closer.

“Because someone had taken my phone.””

I remembered the call.

Don't trust Claire.

“Who had it?””

Sarah looked toward the window.

“Mara.””

Silence.

“Then why would she tell me not to trust Claire?””

“Because Claire knew where I was.””

Claire nodded.

“She thought I'd lead you to Sarah.””

I looked at her.

“And you did.””

“Yes.””

“Why now?””

“Because Sarah told me to wait.””

“For what?””

“For Emma to be old enough to remember what happened.””

I looked at my daughter.

“What does Emma remember?””

Sarah's face tightened.

“More than you think.””

I frowned.

“She was two when you disappeared.””

“Yes.””

“She couldn't remember.””

“She remembered a room.””

“What room?””

“A white room.””

I felt a chill.

Sarah whispered:

“She told me once that someone put a needle in her arm.””

I stood.

“Emma?””

Sarah reached for me.

“Daniel, don't wake her.””

“Someone experimented on my daughter.””

“She was never harmed seriously.””

“Never?””

Sarah's eyes filled with tears.

“I don't know.””

I stopped.

“What do you mean?””

“I wasn't there every time.””

The room went silent.

Then Margaret entered holding four cups of tea.

She stopped.

“What happened?””

I looked at her.

“Did you know?””

She lowered the tray.

“Know what?””

“About Emma.””

Margaret's face changed.

Sarah stood.

“Mom.””

Margaret looked at her.

“You're alive.””

Sarah crossed the room.

They embraced.

I watched them.

Three years of grief.

Three years of lies.

And now my family was standing in front of me.

Then Margaret whispered something.

Sarah pulled away.

“What did you say?””

“I said I know who Rachel is.””

I froze.

“The surrogate?””

Margaret nodded.

“She isn't a stranger.””

“Who is she?””

Margaret looked at Emma.

Then at me.

“She is your sister.””

My mouth went dry.

“I don't have a sister.””

Margaret's eyes filled with tears.

“You did.””

I stared.

“Her name was Rachel.””

Claire stood.

“That can't be.””

Margaret nodded.

“Rachel was born before Daniel.””

I felt the room spinning.

“My sister died as a baby.””

“No.””

Margaret shook her head.

“She was taken.””

I couldn't breathe.

“By who?””

Margaret whispered:

“David.””

Sarah's face went pale.

“Mom, why would he take her?””

“Because Rachel was the first child he used in his research.””

I looked at Emma.

Then at the medical documents.

The silver bracelet.

The photograph.

Suddenly, something clicked.

Rachel wasn't just the surrogate.

She had been part of the experiment.

And Emma wasn't the beginning.

She was the continuation.

My phone buzzed.

A message appeared from an unknown number.

*Ask your mother why Rachel survived.*

Then another.

*Ask her why she gave you up.*

I looked at Margaret.

She began to cry.

Sarah whispered:

“Mom…”

Margaret shook her head.

“I never told Daniel because I was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?”” I asked.

May you like

She looked directly at me.

“Rachel isn't dead.””
