Chapter 2: The Woman Who Knew

I didn't drive away immediately.

I sat in my car with Emma buckled into the back seat, staring through the windshield at the house I'd once believed was safe.

Rain tapped softly against the glass.

My hands remained locked around the steering wheel.

“Daddy?””

I looked in the rearview mirror.

Emma was clutching the sleeve of her pajamas.

“What is it, sweetheart?””

“Are you mad at me?””

The question hit harder than anything Vanessa had said.

“No.””

“But I ate Max's food.””

“You were hungry.””

“I wasn't supposed to.””

I turned around.

“You're never going to get in trouble for being hungry.””

Emma stared at me.

“Promise?””

“I promise.””

She slowly nodded.

Then I noticed something on her wrist.

A faint red mark.

Like fingers had been wrapped around it.

I reached back.

“What's that?””

Emma pulled her arm against her chest.

“Nothing.””

“Emma.””

She looked down.

“Vanessa said I shouldn't show you.””

My jaw tightened.

“What happened?””

“She grabbed me.””

“When?””

“Yesterday.””

“Why?””

Emma's lower lip trembled.

“Because I asked when you were coming home.””

I closed my eyes.

For three years, I had told myself Vanessa was helping me raise Emma.

While I worked.

While I traveled.

While I tried to rebuild a life after Sarah's death.

I had mistaken absence for trust.

And now I was paying for it.

I started the engine.

Instead of heading to a hotel, I drove to 214 Willow Street.

I didn't know who lived there.

I didn't know why a stranger would send me there.

But whoever had recorded that video knew something I didn't.

Twenty minutes later, I parked outside a narrow blue house.

Emma pressed her face against the window.

“That's where the lady lives.””

I turned around.

“What lady?””

“The one with the camera.””

My pulse jumped.

“You've been here before?””

Emma nodded.

“Once.””

“Who brought you?””

She hesitated.

“Claire.””

I stared at her.

“Vanessa's sister?””

“Yes.””

I stepped out of the car.

“Stay here.””

Emma immediately grabbed my wrist.

“No.””

I looked at her.

“Daddy, don't leave me alone.””

I softened.

“Okay. You stay right beside me.””

We walked to the front door.

Before I could knock, it opened.

A woman stood there.

Early sixties.

Gray hair.

Dark sweater.

Tired eyes.

The moment she saw Emma, her face crumpled.

“Oh, sweetheart.””

Emma hid behind my leg.

The woman looked at me.

“You're Daniel.””

I nodded.

“Who are you?””

“My name is Margaret.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Come inside.””

I didn't move.

“How do you know Sarah?””

Margaret's hand tightened around the door.

“Because Sarah was my daughter.””

The world seemed to tilt.

I stared at her.

“No.””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

I shook my head.

“Sarah told me her parents died before we met.””

Margaret looked toward Emma.

“She told you what she needed you to believe.””

I couldn't speak.

Margaret opened the door wider.

“Please. You don't have much time.””

“What does that mean?””

“Vanessa knows you have the video.””

I felt the blood drain from my face.

“How?””

Margaret glanced at my phone.

“Because I didn't send it.””

Silence.

“Then who did?””

Margaret whispered:

“Claire.””

Emma's eyes widened.

I turned toward her.

“You know Claire?””

Margaret crouched.

“She does.””

Emma nodded.

“Claire said Mommy wasn't gone.””

Margaret's expression changed.

I felt my heart stop.

“What did you say?””

Emma looked at me.

“She said Mommy was watching.””

I crouched beside my daughter.

“Emma, what exactly did Claire tell you?””

“She said Mommy wanted Daddy to know the truth.””

Margaret covered her mouth.

Then she whispered:

“Sarah knew this would happen.””

I stood.

“What would happen?””

Margaret turned toward a cabinet.

From inside, she pulled out a thick envelope.

My name was written across it.

*DANIEL HARPER.*

My hands went cold.

“When did Sarah write that?””

“Three weeks before she died.””

I stared at the envelope.

“Why didn't you give it to me?””

Margaret looked ashamed.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of Vanessa?””

She nodded.

“And of Claire.””

I frowned.

“Claire is helping me.””

Margaret shook her head.

“Not exactly.””

Before I could ask what she meant, headlights swept across the front window.

A black SUV slowed outside.

Margaret's face went pale.

“Get away from the window.””

I pulled Emma behind me.

“Who is that?””

Margaret locked the door.

“I don't know.””

The SUV stopped.

A car door opened.

Footsteps approached.

Then someone knocked.

Three slow knocks.

Emma grabbed my hand.

Margaret whispered:

“Don't answer.””

The knocking came again.

Then a woman's voice floated through the door.

“Daniel?””

I froze.

I knew that voice.

Vanessa.

I looked at Margaret.

“How did she find us?””

Margaret didn't answer.

The door handle began to turn.

Locked.

Then Vanessa spoke again.

Calmly.

“Daniel, if you open that door, I'll explain everything.””

Emma whispered:

“Daddy…”

I looked down.

She was staring at the envelope in my hand.

“Don't open it here.””

“Why?””

“Because Claire said…”

Emma stopped.

“What did Claire say?””

My daughter looked toward the door.

“She said Vanessa would come if she knew Grandma still had Mommy's letters.””

Margaret's face went white.

May you like

And suddenly, from the hallway behind us, came the sound of a floorboard creaking.

We weren't alone in the house.
