Chapter 6: The Box Under My Bed
Emma pointed toward the exit.
“Under your bed.””
I stared at her.
“You've seen it?””
She nodded.
“Mommy showed me.””
My heart pounded.
“When?””
“Before she went away.””
Claire stepped closer.
“Emma, what did Sarah tell you?””
Emma looked at her.
“She said Daddy wasn't supposed to find it until Vanessa couldn't hurt us anymore.””
I looked at Claire.
“Then we're going home.””
Claire shook her head.
“That's exactly what Vanessa wants.””
“Maybe.””
“You heard her. She wants you back there.””
“I don't care.””
“Daniel—”
“My daughter knows where the evidence is.””
I looked at Emma.
“And I'm done letting other people decide what happens to her.””
We left the hospital through the emergency entrance.
This time, there was no SUV.
No David.
No Vanessa.
That somehow made it worse.
The silence felt deliberate.
I drove home with Claire and Margaret following in a separate car.
The house looked normal when we arrived.
Too normal.
The porch light was on.
The curtains were closed.
No cars in the driveway.
I parked.
Emma refused to let go of my hand.
“Daddy.””
“Yes?””
“Don't go upstairs alone.””
I squeezed her fingers.
“I won't.””
Claire looked at the house.
“She may have already been here.””
“I know.””
We entered.
The smell of Vanessa's perfume still hung in the hallway.
The kitchen was exactly as we'd left it.
The broken plate was still on the floor.
The dog bowl was gone.
I looked at the empty spot.
Someone had cleaned it.
Recently.
I bent down.
There were wet footprints near the pantry.
Not mine.
Not Emma's.
Women's shoes.
Claire saw them.
“Daniel.””
I followed the footprints.
They led upstairs.
I pulled out my phone.
“Call the police.””
Claire nodded.
I picked Emma up.
We climbed the stairs.
The bedroom door was slightly open.
I hadn't left it that way.
I pushed it.
The room was dark.
I turned on the light.
Everything looked untouched.
My closet.
The dresser.
The photographs.
Then I saw the mattress.
It had been moved.
Barely.
But enough.
Someone had searched underneath.
I dropped to my knees.
“Emma, stay behind me.””
I lifted the mattress.
Nothing.
Claire entered.
“She found it.””
“Who?””
“Vanessa.””
I looked around.
Then Emma spoke.
“Daddy.””
She pointed beneath the bed frame.
“Not there.””
I crouched.
There was a loose wooden panel inside the bed frame.
I pulled it open.
A red metal box sat inside.
My heart hammered.
I lifted it out.
There was a combination lock.
Three numbers.
Emma whispered:
“Mommy's birthday.””
I entered the date.
Click.
The lock opened.
Inside were photographs.
Documents.
A flash drive.
And a small silver bracelet.
The same bracelet from the photograph.
My hands shook.
I picked up the bracelet.
Claire stared.
“That's hers.””
“Whose?””
“The other woman's.””
I unfolded one photograph.
It showed Sarah holding a newborn baby.
On the back:
*Emma — Day One.*
I stared at the baby's face.
Then at Emma.
They looked identical.
My eyes filled.
“That proves she's Sarah's daughter.””
Claire shook her head.
“No.””
She pointed to another photograph.
It showed the same baby.
But this time, beside the baby was the woman from the hospital photo.
Written beneath it:
*Biological mother — Rachel Hayes.*
I couldn't breathe.
“Who is Rachel?””
Claire didn't answer.
I searched the documents.
A medical report.
A custody agreement.
A genetic test.
Then a letter from Sarah.
I opened it.
Daniel,
If you've found the box, then you finally know about Rachel.
She is the woman who gave birth to Emma.
I closed my eyes.
My entire life seemed to fracture.
But that doesn't mean Rachel is Emma's mother in the way you think.
I kept reading.
Rachel was part of a fertility program that Vanessa's father funded.
Emma was created from your genetic material and mine.
I stopped.
Claire whispered:
“What?””
I looked at her.
“The baby was ours.””
Claire took the paper.
Her eyes scanned the report.
“She was conceived through IVF.””
I nodded.
“Then why was Rachel carrying her?””
“I don't know.””
I read the next page.
The answer was there.
Rachel had agreed to be a surrogate.
But the agreement had been altered.
The legal parentage had been changed.
And someone had paid her to disappear.
Then I found the final document.
A photograph of Rachel.
Her face was older now.
But I recognized her.
Not from the hospital.
Not from Sarah's funeral.
From somewhere else.
She had been standing outside my office six months ago.
I'd thought she was a stranger.
She had watched me from across the street.
I had ignored her.
My phone suddenly rang.
The screen displayed a number I knew.
Vanessa.
I answered.
“What do you want?””
Her voice was strangely calm.
“You found the box.””
“How do you know?””
“Because I put it there.””
My blood froze.
“You?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“So you'd finally stop trusting the wrong people.””
I looked at Claire.
Vanessa continued.
“Open the flash drive.””
I stared at it.
“What’s on it?””
“Everything.””
“Everything about what?””
“Sarah.””
My heart raced.
“You expect me to believe you?””
“No.””
She paused.
“That's why I'm sending you something.””
A notification appeared.
A video file.
I opened it.
The screen showed a hospital room.
Sarah was sitting on a bed.
Alive.
Three years ago.
Her face was bruised.
She was crying.
A man stood beside her.
David.
Vanessa's father.
And beside him was another person.
A doctor.
Dr. Bell.
Sarah looked directly into the camera.
“Daniel, if you're watching this, I need you to understand something.””
Her voice trembled.
“I didn't die in that crash.””
I stopped breathing.
Claire covered her mouth.
Sarah continued.
“They took me because I refused to give them Emma.””
The video shook.
Someone behind the camera whispered:
“Tell him the rest.””
Sarah looked terrified.
She leaned closer.
“Daniel…”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“The woman you married isn't Vanessa.””
I stared at the screen.
Claire stepped backward.
“No…”
Sarah continued.
“Vanessa died before our wedding.””
The video suddenly cut to black.
Then one final frame appeared.
A recent photograph.
Sarah.
Alive.
Standing in front of a house.
Holding a little girl's hand.
Emma's hand.
The timestamp was from yesterday.
I dropped the phone.
Emma looked at me.
“Daddy?””
I couldn't answer.
Because the front door downstairs had just opened.
A woman's voice called from the hallway.
“Daniel?””
Claire went completely still.
Margaret whispered:
“That's Sarah.””
Footsteps moved toward the stairs.
One.
Two.
Three.
Then a woman appeared at the top step.
Her face was thinner.
Her hair was shorter.
But there was no mistaking her eyes.
The same eyes I'd loved.
The same eyes I'd buried.
She looked at Emma.
Tears rolled down her cheeks.
Then she looked at me.
“I'm sorry it took me three years to come home.””
Emma screamed one word.
“Mommy!””
Sarah dropped to her knees.
And behind her, from the bottom of the stairs, another voice whispered:
“Don't let her touch the child.””
I turned.
May you like
David was standing in the doorway.
And he was holding a gun.
