Chapter 1: The Bowl Beside My Daughter
“Daddy, please don’t make me go back there.””
Those were the first words my five-year-old daughter whispered after I found her eating beside the dog’s bowl.
I had imagined hundreds of ways my surprise return home would go.
Emma running down the hallway.
Her tiny arms wrapped around my waist.
Her laughter filling the house before I even put my suitcase down.
I had left for a three-day business trip, but the meeting ended early. I decided to drive home two days ahead of schedule, imagining the look on my daughter’s face when she saw me standing at the door.
Instead, I walked into a nightmare.
The front door clicked shut behind me.
“Emma?”” I called.
No answer.
The house was strangely quiet.
I stepped farther inside, my suitcase wheels dragging across the hardwood floor.
Then I heard something.
A small metal scraping sound.
Like a spoon hitting a bowl.
I followed the noise toward the kitchen.
And stopped breathing.
My daughter was sitting on the floor beside the cabinets.
Her knees were pulled against her chest.
Her hair was messy.
Her pink pajamas were stained.
And in front of her was our golden retriever Max’s metal food bowl.
Half-filled with cold rice, leftover gravy, and dog kibble.
“Emma?””
My voice came out louder than I intended.
She froze.
The small piece of rice in her fingers fell back into the bowl.
“Daddy?””
I dropped my suitcase.
It hit the floor with a heavy thud.
I rushed toward her and fell to my knees.
“Baby, what are you doing?””
Emma immediately wiped her mouth with her sleeve.
“I was hungry.””
My heart cracked.
Across the kitchen, my wife Vanessa sat at the dining table.
She was wearing a silk robe, her hair perfectly styled, calmly cutting into a steak dinner.
A glass of wine sat beside her plate.
She didn’t even look surprised.
“Daniel, don’t start.””
I slowly turned toward her.
“Don’t start what?””
Vanessa sighed.
“Don’t turn this into some dramatic performance.””
I pointed at the bowl.
“My daughter is eating from the dog’s bowl.””
Vanessa placed her fork down.
“She refused her dinner.””
“She’s five years old.””
“And five-year-olds need discipline.””
I stared at her.
“What kind of discipline is this?””
Vanessa leaned back.
“She needs to understand consequences.””
Emma lowered her eyes.
That hurt more than anything.
My daughter used to run to me whenever she was scared.
Now she looked like she was afraid to even breathe.
I picked her up.
She immediately wrapped her arms around my neck.
“Sweetheart,” I whispered, “when did you last eat a real meal?””
She didn’t answer.
I looked down at her.
“Emma.””
Her eyes moved toward Vanessa.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
Fear.
“Yesterday,” she whispered.
My stomach twisted.
I had only been gone for two days.
I slowly turned back.
“Vanessa.””
She looked annoyed.
“What?””
“Explain.””
She laughed softly.
“You’re acting like I starved her.””
“She’s eating dog food!””
“She is not starving.””
Vanessa stood up.
“She’s been difficult lately.””
“Difficult?”” I asked.
“Yes.””
She crossed her arms.
“Ever since you started traveling more, she’s become impossible. She cries, she refuses everything, she throws tantrums.””
I stared at my wife.
The woman who promised me, after Sarah died, that she would love Emma like her own child.
The woman who held Emma at the funeral and told me, She’ll never feel alone again.
Apparently, those words had expired.
“She lost her mother,” I said quietly.
Vanessa’s expression hardened.
“And I’m tired of pretending I’m her mother.””
The room went silent.
Even Vanessa seemed to realize what she had said.
But she didn’t apologize.
Instead, she walked toward the table.
“I have spent years raising another woman’s child.””
Emma flinched.
I felt my anger rising.
“She is not another woman’s child.””
“She’s Sarah’s daughter.””
I looked at her.
“She’s our daughter.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No, Daniel. She’s yours.””
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
I looked at the expensive steak on her plate.
Then at Emma’s dirty hands.
Then at the dog bowl.
Something inside me broke.
I grabbed Vanessa’s plate.
CRASH.
The steak hit the floor.
Vanessa screamed.
“Have you lost your mind?””
“No,” I said.
I picked Emma up.
“But I finally found it.””
Vanessa pointed toward the door.
“Then leave.””
I stared at her.
She laughed bitterly.
“Take your daughter and leave.””
Emma tightened her arms around my neck.
“Daddy…”
I kissed her forehead.
“We’re going home.””
Then she whispered the sentence that froze my blood.
“Not just today.””
I looked down.
“What do you mean?””
Her voice became smaller.
“She makes me eat there every time you go away.””
I stopped walking.
Vanessa’s face changed.
“Emma, stop lying.””
My daughter buried her face into my shoulder.
“She said nobody would believe me.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“What else happened?””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Daniel, she’s making things up.””
But Emma pointed toward the pantry.
“Daddy…”
I followed her finger.
“The camera.””
My eyebrows tightened.
“What camera?””
“The little one.””
She swallowed.
“The one with the red light.””
Vanessa went completely still.
I noticed.
And that scared me more than anything.
“What camera?”” I repeated.
Emma whispered:
“The one the lady put there.””
Vanessa suddenly moved toward the pantry.
I stepped in front of her.
“Don’t.””
“Move.””
“No.””
“Daniel, you’re being ridiculous.””
My phone vibrated.
A message appeared from an unknown number.
One sentence.
Daniel, Sarah asked me to protect Emma. You need to see this.
Attached was a video.
My hands started shaking.
Because Sarah had been dead for three years.
I opened the video.
The screen showed our kitchen.
The timestamp was from two nights earlier.
Emma sat at the table with a plate in front of her.
Vanessa stood behind her.
I turned up the volume.
At first, there was only the hum of the refrigerator.
Then Vanessa spoke.
“Finish it.””
Emma’s tiny voice answered.
“I’m not hungry.””
The video jumped forward.
Vanessa grabbed the plate.
“If you don't eat this, you know where you're going.””
Emma began crying.
“Please.””
Then came the part that made my blood run cold.
Vanessa crouched beside her and whispered something directly into her ear.
I couldn't hear the words.
But Emma immediately stopped crying.
She looked toward the camera.
Straight into the lens.
And mouthed two words.
Help me.
I paused the video.
My entire body went numb.
Vanessa reached for my phone.
“Give me that.””
I pulled it away.
“Who recorded this?””
“I don't know.””
“You know exactly who.””
Her face tightened.
“You're actually going to believe a hidden camera over your wife?””
I stared at her.
“I don't know who I believe anymore.””
Emma tugged at my shirt.
“Daddy?””
“Yes, baby?””
“Can we go?””
I picked up my suitcase with one hand.
“Yeah.””
As I carried her toward the door, my phone vibrated again.
Another message.
Don't go to a hotel.
I stopped.
A second message appeared.
Take Emma to 214 Willow Street.
Then another.
And Daniel… don't trust Vanessa's sister.
I stared at the screen.
Vanessa's sister, Claire, had been living across the state for almost a year.
At least, that was what Vanessa had told me.
I looked at my daughter.
“Emma,” I whispered, “do you know Claire?””
She nodded.
“Yes.””
My stomach dropped.
“Where have you seen her?””
Emma looked toward Vanessa.
May you like
Then she whispered:
“She comes when you're gone.””
