The Red Light in the Pantry / Chapter 5 / 10

Chapter 5: The Name on the Birth Record

I didn't wait for David to reach the car.

I reversed hard.

The tires screamed against the wet pavement.

David jumped aside.

I shifted into drive and accelerated.

“Daddy!”” Emma cried.

“I've got you.””

I kept one hand on the wheel and the other stretched toward the back seat.

“Are you hurt?””

“No.””

“Good.””

Claire looked behind us.

“He's following.””

I checked the mirror.

The black SUV was moving.

Fast.

“Where do we go?””

Claire pointed ahead.

“Turn left.””

“Where?””

“Anywhere. Just lose him.””

I turned.

The SUV followed.

I made another turn.

Then another.

Five minutes later, we were driving through a maze of narrow streets.

Finally, Claire pointed toward an underground parking garage.

“Go in there.””

I hesitated.

“It's private.””

“That's the point.””

I drove down the ramp.

The garage was nearly empty.

I parked behind a concrete pillar and killed the engine.

Everyone became silent.

We listened.

Nothing.

Then—

Headlights swept across the entrance.

The black SUV passed by.

It didn't enter.

We waited.

Thirty seconds.

A minute.

Two.

Only then did I breathe.

Emma whispered:

“Daddy?””

I turned around.

“Yes?””

“Can I tell you something?””

“Anything.””

She looked at Claire.

“Claire said I shouldn't say it unless Vanessa was hurting me.””

Claire closed her eyes.

I felt a chill.

“Tell me.””

Emma swallowed.

“Vanessa said my real mommy was coming back.””

My heart stopped.

“When did she say that?””

“Before Daddy's work trip.””

“What else?””

“She said if I told you, she would make Mommy disappear again.””

I couldn't speak.

Claire looked at me.

“That's why Sarah's message may not have been what it seemed.””

“What do you mean?””

“The phone call.””

I remembered the voice.

Don't trust Claire.

“Someone could have copied her voice?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

“I don't know.””

I looked at the phone.

“Then we're running out of time.””

Claire nodded.

“There is one place Vanessa can't reach easily.””

“Where?””

“The hospital.””

I stared at her.

“Why?””

“Because that's where the original records are.””

We left the garage twenty minutes later.

The hospital sat across town, its emergency entrance glowing against the darkness.

I parked underground.

We entered through a side door.

Claire knew exactly where she was going.

She led us to a basement records department.

An elderly security guard looked up.

“Can I help you?””

Claire smiled.

“I'm looking for archived maternity records.””

He frowned.

“Those aren't public.””

I stepped forward.

“My daughter was born here.””

“What year?””

I gave him the date.

His fingers moved across the keyboard.

Then stopped.

His expression changed.

“That's strange.””

“What?””

“There are two entries.””

Claire and I exchanged a look.

He printed both.

I stared at the pages.

One listed Sarah as the mother.

The second listed another woman.

The name was partially obscured.

I leaned closer.

“Can you retrieve the original?””

The guard shook his head.

“Those files were digitized.””

“Then show me the scan.””

He hesitated.

“Sir, I can't.””

I placed my identification on the desk.

“This is my daughter.””

He looked at me.

Then at the terrified little girl beside me.

Finally, he sighed.

“Give me ten minutes.””

We waited.

Ten minutes became twenty.

Then he returned carrying a sealed archival folder.

“This was never digitized.””

I opened it.

Inside were delivery notes, identification bracelets, and handwritten nursing records.

My hands shook as I turned each page.

Then I found it.

*Baby Girl — Mother: Sarah Harper.*

But beneath it was another line.

*Transfer requested.*

I looked up.

“Transfer?””

The guard nodded.

“Where?””

He pointed to the next page.

I read the destination.

*Pediatric Research Unit — Room 7.*

“What is that?””

Claire's face went pale.

“That unit was closed years ago.””

I turned another page.

A handwritten note appeared.

*Do not release infant until authorized by Dr. Bell.*

I frowned.

“Who is Dr. Bell?””

The guard looked at me.

“I don't know.””

Then he pointed to a signature.

I recognized it instantly.

Vanessa.

My wife.

I felt sick.

“She signed this.””

Claire looked at the document.

“Daniel…”

“What?””

“Look at the date.””

I did.

The date was three days after Emma's birth.

I shook my head.

“That doesn't make sense.””

Claire whispered:

“Because Vanessa wasn't working here three days after Emma was born.””

“What?””

“She quit before that.””

I stared at the signature.

Someone had forged it.

Someone had used Vanessa's name.

Then the guard suddenly grabbed my arm.

“Wait.””

“What?””

He pointed to a second signature.

*D. Harper.*

Mine.

My stomach dropped.

“I didn't sign that.””

The guard looked confused.

“Maybe you forgot.””

“No.””

I knew my own signature.

That wasn't mine.

Claire leaned closer.

“Daniel, that's not a signature.””

“What?””

“It's a tracing.””

I looked again.

The lines were unnaturally precise.

Someone had copied my name.

Then I saw another sheet underneath.

A payment receipt.

$250,000.

Paid to a private medical foundation.

The recipient name was:

*David Mercer.*

Vanessa's father.

My hands went numb.

“So this was about money.””

Claire shook her head.

“No.””

She pointed to the final line.

*Purpose: Genetic acquisition and custodial transfer.*

I stared at the words.

“Genetic acquisition?””

Claire's voice was barely audible.

“Someone paid to obtain a child.””

Emma stood behind us.

She looked frightened.

I immediately closed the folder.

“Enough.””

The security guard suddenly looked toward the hallway.

“Someone's coming.””

Footsteps echoed downstairs.

Slow.

Measured.

Claire grabbed my arm.

“We have to go.””

We hurried toward the stairwell.

The lights flickered.

Then went out.

Emma screamed.

I picked her up.

“It's okay.””

A voice came from the darkness.

“Daniel.””

I froze.

Vanessa.

She stepped into the dim emergency light.

Her face was calm.

Her clothes were dry.

She had somehow gotten into the hospital without us noticing.

She looked at Emma.

“Come here, sweetheart.””

Emma buried her face against my shoulder.

Vanessa's expression hardened.

“Daniel, you're frightening her.””

“You bought a child.””

Her face went still.

“What?””

I held up the document.

“Two hundred and fifty thousand dollars.””

Vanessa stared at it.

Then she laughed.

“You don't understand what you're holding.””

“Then explain.””

She looked at Emma.

“I was trying to protect her.””

“From who?””

Vanessa's eyes moved to Claire.

“From her.””

Claire stepped forward.

“Don't you dare.””

Vanessa smiled.

“You still believe Sarah trusted you?””

Claire's face drained of color.

Vanessa looked at me.

“Ask Claire what happened the night Sarah died.””

“I already know.””

“No.””

Vanessa's voice softened.

“You know the story she wants you to know.””

She took one step closer.

“I can prove Sarah wasn't your victim.””

I tightened my grip around Emma.

“Then prove it.””

Vanessa pulled out her phone.

She opened a photograph.

It showed Sarah.

Alive.

Standing outside a motel.

And beside her was Claire.

But Claire was holding something.

A small black bag.

Vanessa turned the screen toward me.

“Your sister-in-law didn't come to save Sarah.””

Claire whispered:

“That photo is fake.””

Vanessa smiled.

“Then ask her why Sarah's blood was found on the bag.””

I looked at Claire.

She didn't speak.

Vanessa walked toward the stairs.

“You want the truth, Daniel?””

She stopped.

“Go home.””

“Why?””

“Because the red box you're looking for…”

Her smile disappeared.

“…is already in your house.””

Then she walked away.

I stood frozen.

Until Emma whispered in my ear.

“Daddy?””

May you like

“What?””

“I know where the red box is.””
