Chapter 7: The Woman I Buried

Everything happened at once.

David raised the gun.

Claire screamed.

Margaret pulled Emma behind her.

And Sarah—

Sarah stood between us and the man who had apparently spent three years convincing me she was dead.

“David, don't,” she said.

His hand tightened around the weapon.

“You should have stayed gone.””

Sarah's face hardened.

“I tried.””

“You were given a chance.””

“You took my life.””

“No.”” David's voice was strangely calm.

“I gave you one.””

I stepped forward.

“Put the gun down.””

David looked at me.

“You still don't understand.””

“Then explain it.””

“You've been lied to for years.””

I laughed bitterly.

“That's becoming a familiar sentence.””

David's eyes flicked toward Sarah.

“She was never supposed to come back.””

Sarah looked at me.

“Daniel, don't listen to him.””

David raised the gun slightly.

“Tell him the truth.””

Sarah's voice shook.

“I already did.””

“No. You told him enough to make yourself the victim.””

I looked between them.

“What truth?””

Neither answered.

“Somebody better start talking.””

David smiled without humor.

“You want to know why Sarah disappeared?””

“Yes.””

“Because she discovered what Emma really was.””

I felt Emma's fingers tighten around mine.

“She already told me.””

“No.””

David shook his head.

“She told you the version that protects her.””

Sarah stepped forward.

“Daniel, please.””

“Stop.””

She froze.

I looked at her.

“You're my wife.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“You're supposed to be dead.””

“I know.””

“I buried you.””

“I know.””

“I spent three years talking to a photograph because I thought you were gone.””

Sarah covered her mouth.

“I know.””

“And you were alive.””

“I was trying to get back to you.””

“Then why didn't you?””

Her voice broke.

“Because every time I tried, they threatened Emma.””

The room went silent.

I looked at David.

“Who are they?””

David answered.

“People who wanted what Sarah discovered.””

“What?””

He glanced at Emma.

“Her.””

I stepped in front of my daughter.

“You're going to have to do better than that.””

David lowered the gun slightly.

“Emma's DNA is unusual.””

Claire snapped, “That's a lie.””

David looked at her.

“You know exactly what I'm talking about.””

“I know what you did.””

“You don't know everything.””

Sarah's eyes remained on me.

“Daniel, the IVF clinic where we conceived Emma was owned by David's foundation.””

I remembered the name on the payment record.

Mercer Medical Foundation.

Sarah continued.

“We thought it was just a fertility clinic.””

“It wasn't,” David said.

Sarah ignored him.

“They were collecting genetic samples from wealthy families.””

I stared at her.

“Why?””

“To build something they could patent.””

Claire stepped forward.

“Human genetic treatments.””

David corrected her.

“Genetic enhancement.””

The words landed heavily.

I looked at Emma.

She was five years old.

A child who loved pancakes, stuffed animals, and bedtime stories.

Not a product.

Not an experiment.

David continued.

“Emma carried a rare combination of genes.””

“From me and Sarah?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did you need her?””

“Because your daughter's genetic profile could solve a problem our researchers had been working on for years.””

Sarah's voice became cold.

“You mean you wanted to experiment on her.””

David's jaw tightened.

“We wanted to study her.””

“You wanted to own her.””

I looked at Sarah.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because Vanessa was watching you.””

I stared.

“Vanessa?””

Sarah nodded.

“The woman you married wasn't Vanessa.””

I looked toward the hallway.

“The woman in my house.””

“She was an impersonator.””

My mind raced.

“Then who was she?””

Sarah looked at Claire.

Claire answered quietly.

“Her name is Mara.””

I remembered every strange detail.

The little changes in Vanessa's handwriting.

Her sudden hatred of Sarah's photographs.

The way she never visited Sarah's grave.

The stories about her childhood that never quite made sense.

I had blamed grief.

Stress.

Time.

Anything except the truth.

“How did she fool me?””

Sarah looked down.

“She looked enough like Vanessa.””

“But Vanessa was my wife.””

“No.””

Sarah's voice softened.

“Vanessa was your friend.””

I stared.

“What?””

“Before we got married, Vanessa worked with Sarah.””

Claire added, “They discovered what David was doing.””

“Then why was Vanessa involved?””

“She wasn't.””

Sarah swallowed.

“She tried to expose him.””

David's expression darkened.

“She betrayed her employer.””

“She saved me,” Sarah said.

David suddenly moved toward the stairs.

I stepped in front of him.

“You're not going anywhere.””

He raised the gun.

“Move.””

“No.””

Sarah grabbed my shoulder.

“Daniel, please.””

Then the sound of sirens filled the street.

David's face changed.

Claire smiled faintly.

“I called the police.””

David looked at her.

“You stupid—”

A loud crash came from downstairs.

The front door burst open.

“Police! Drop the weapon!””

David turned.

For one second, his attention left us.

Sarah moved.

She grabbed his wrist.

The gun fired.

BANG.

Emma screamed.

I lunged forward.

David stumbled backward.

The gun fell down the stairs.

Officers rushed into the house.

“Hands where we can see them!””

David froze.

Then he slowly raised both hands.

One officer tackled him.

Another kicked the gun away.

I barely noticed.

I was looking at Sarah.

She was standing perfectly still.

Blood covered her sleeve.

“Sarah?””

She looked down.

“I think I'm hurt.””

I rushed toward her.

There was a small wound along her upper arm.

Nothing like the bullet wounds I'd imagined.

But enough to make me shake.

I held her.

She cried into my chest.

“I wanted to come home.””

I closed my eyes.

“I thought you were dead.””

“I know.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because they made me believe they'd kill Emma if I did.””

I looked at her.

“Who?””

She pulled away.

“Daniel…”

Her eyes moved toward the officers.

“There's still someone you haven't seen.””

I frowned.

“Who?””

Sarah whispered:

“Mara.””

My phone vibrated.

A message appeared.

*You found Sarah.*

Then another.

*Congratulations.*

May you like

And finally:

*Now ask her what happened to Vanessa.*
