Chapter 9: The Man Who Knew Everything

The photograph on my phone should have been impossible.

That was the only thought I could form.

My fingers went numb as I stared at the screen.

My father.

Daniel Marquez.

Standing beside my mother and Thomas.

Alive.

The date was clear.

Yesterday.

No matter how many times I blinked, the image did not change.

The man I had buried in my heart for twenty years was standing in a photograph taken only one day ago.

“Elena?””

Richard’s voice sounded distant.

I couldn’t answer.

My mother noticed my expression.

“What happened?””

I slowly turned the phone toward her.

The moment she saw the picture, all the color left her face.

That reaction told me everything.

“You know.””

My voice was quiet.

But everyone heard it.

My mother looked at me.

“Where did you get this?””

“Answer me.””

“Where?””

“From the person who wants me to believe you are lying.””

The silence became unbearable.

Thomas stepped closer.

“Let me see.””

I handed him the phone.

His expression changed immediately.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

“You know him,” I whispered.

Thomas looked at the photograph.

Then closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

My heart sank.

“How?””

Before he could answer, my mother spoke.

“Because Daniel is alive.””

The world stopped.

Richard stared at her.

“You knew?””

My mother looked at him.

“Yes.””

Richard stepped back.

“You knew Daniel was alive?””

“I found him.””

“When?””

“Years ago.””

The pain on Richard’s face was impossible to watch.

“How many secrets have you all been keeping?””

Nobody answered.

Because the truth was worse than any lie.

My entire life had been built around missing people who were never gone.

My father.

My mother.

The truth.

All of them had been somewhere.

Just hidden from me.

“Where is he?””

My mother looked at me.

“Elena…”

“Where is my father?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“He cannot come here.””

“Why?””

She looked at Thomas.

Then away.

“Because he is the reason everyone is still looking for us.””

That sentence made no sense.

“My father is the reason?””

My mother took a deep breath.

“Daniel knows the truth.””

Richard looked at her.

“What truth?””

She looked toward the abandoned road.

“The truth about Margaret Harrington.””

Everyone became silent.

Richard shook his head.

“No.””

My mother looked at him.

“You have to accept it.””

“She was my mother.””

“And she was also a woman who made terrible choices.””

Richard looked broken.

I understood.

It was not easy to accept that someone you loved could hurt others.

Sometimes the truth was painful because it did not fit the person you remembered.

Thomas handed me back the phone.

“There is something you need to know.””

I looked at him.

“Another secret?””

His expression was serious.

“Yes.””

I almost laughed.

“How many more?””

“This is the last one.””

I wanted to believe him.

Thomas looked at Richard.

“Your father did not kill Daniel.””

Richard frowned.

“What?””

“He planned it.””

A pause.

“But someone else carried it out.””

My mother looked down.

Richard stared.

“Who?””

Thomas looked at me.

“Someone Daniel trusted.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who?””

Thomas did not answer.

Instead, he reached into his coat.

He pulled out an old voice recorder.

My father’s voice came from the small device.

The sound was weak.

But unmistakable.

My entire body froze.

“Elena…”

I covered my mouth.

It was him.

My father.

After twenty years.

I heard his voice.

*“If you are hearing this, then everything failed.””*

Tears filled my eyes.

*“I need you to know something. The person who betrayed me was not Margaret.””*

Richard looked shocked.

Thomas looked down.

The recording continued.

*“Margaret was trying to expose the truth. She made mistakes, but she was not the person who gave me away.””*

Richard looked at my mother.

Then at Thomas.

*“The person who betrayed me was someone I treated like family.””*

My heart raced.

*“Someone who knew my plans. Someone who knew where I hid the evidence.””*

The recording crackled.

Then my father said the words that changed everything.

*“It was Thomas.””*

Nobody moved.

The silence was deafening.

I slowly turned toward him.

Thomas looked away.

Richard stepped forward.

“What?””

Thomas did not answer.

“You betrayed Daniel?””

The man who had spent the entire night claiming to protect the truth said nothing.

My mother closed her eyes.

Richard looked furious.

“You knew.””

He turned to my mother.

“You knew?””

She whispered:

“Yes.””

The betrayal hit from every direction.

I looked at Thomas.

“Why?””

His face was filled with regret.

“I didn’t have a choice.””

“Everyone says that.””

My voice shook.

“My whole life, everyone says they had no choice.””

Thomas looked at me.

“I was trying to save your father.””

“By betraying him?””

“No.””

He stepped closer.

“By getting close enough to the people who wanted him dead.””

I shook my head.

“But my father believed you betrayed him.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Thomas looked at the ground.

“Because I needed him to believe it.””

Nobody understood.

Until he explained.

“I was working undercover.””

Richard frowned.

“Undercover for who?””

Thomas looked at him.

“Your father.””

Richard froze.

“What?””

“Margaret knew her husband was dangerous. She contacted me before Daniel discovered the money.””

The pieces started moving.

Thomas continued.

“She asked me to protect Daniel.””

My mother nodded.

“She believed Thomas was the only person who could get close enough.””

I looked at the voice recorder.

“Then why did my father say you betrayed him?””

Thomas’s eyes filled with regret.

“Because he didn’t know the full plan.””

“What plan?””

“To keep you alive.””

My breathing stopped.

Thomas looked at me.

“The night Daniel disappeared, we knew someone would come for you.””

My mother whispered:

“Margaret wanted Elena gone.””

Richard looked at her.

“My mother?””

“Yes.””

“But why?””

My mother’s voice broke.

“Because Daniel had discovered Margaret was hiding something.””

Thomas continued.

“She was not stealing money.””

Richard frowned.

“Then what?””

Thomas looked at him.

“She was hiding the identity of Daniel’s real enemy.””

The warehouse became silent.

I felt the answer before hearing it.

“Who?””

Thomas looked toward the road.

“The person who has been controlling everything from the beginning.””

A car engine suddenly roared outside.

Everyone turned.

Another vehicle.

But this time, only one person stepped out.

A woman.

Older.

Elegant.

Walking slowly toward us.

Richard’s face went completely white.

“No.””

My mother looked terrified.

I stared.

Because I recognized her from old photographs.

The woman who had supposedly died years ago.

The woman whose name had appeared in every secret.

Margaret Harrington.

Richard whispered:

“My mother.””

Margaret stopped a few feet away.

She looked at her son.

Then at me.

Then at the folder.

“You have all been searching for answers.””

Her voice was calm.

“But you never asked the most important question.””

Nobody spoke.

She smiled slightly.

“Why did Daniel Marquez keep Elena away from the truth?””

I stepped forward.

“Where is my father?””

Margaret looked at me.

“He is waiting for you.””

My heart stopped.

“Where?””

She smiled.

“In the place where this story began.””

Richard stared at her.

“What did you do?””

Margaret looked at him.

A sadness appeared in her eyes.

“I protected you.””

“By destroying everyone?””

“No.””

She looked at me.

“By protecting you from your father.””

The words felt impossible.

“My father?””

Margaret reached into her coat.

She pulled out a final document.

A birth certificate.

She held it toward me.

And when I saw the name written beside *Father*…

I forgot how to breathe.

Because Daniel Marquez was not my biological father.

The man who raised me…

had spent twenty years hiding the truth.

May you like

And my real father’s name was:

*Richard Harrington.*
