Chapter 8: The Woman Who Never Left
The warehouse exploded into chaos.
The moment the doors broke open, everyone moved at once.
Richard grabbed Noah and pulled him behind a stack of old crates.
Thomas shoved the folder into my hands.
“Keep that safe.””
I stared at him.
“Who are they?””
His eyes stayed fixed on the armed men entering the building.
“People who have spent twenty years making sure this truth never came out.””
My heart pounded.
The truth.
My father’s evidence.
My mother.
Everything I had searched for.
Everything my family had lost.
It was all happening in one night.
“Where is my mother?”” I asked.
Thomas looked at me.
“She’s closer than you think.””
Before I could ask what that meant, a loud crash echoed through the warehouse.
The men moved deeper inside.
Richard held Noah close.
“Stay behind me.””
Noah nodded, but his eyes were fixed on me.
“Miss Elena…”
I looked at him.
“It’s okay.””
But I didn’t know if that was true.
Not anymore.
A man in a dark coat stepped forward.
Unlike the others, he was calm.
Too calm.
He looked around the warehouse like he owned it.
Then his eyes landed on me.
“Elena Marquez.””
Hearing my full name from him made my skin crawl.
“Who are you?””
He smiled.
“My name doesn’t matter.””
Thomas stepped forward.
“It does.””
The man looked at him.
“You should have stayed dead, Thomas.””
Richard’s expression changed.
“Dead?””
Thomas ignored him.
The man continued.
“Twenty years ago, you disappeared with evidence that belonged to us.””
“Evidence that exposed a crime.””
The man smiled.
“Depends who tells the story.””
I stepped forward.
“You people destroyed my family.””
He looked at me.
“No.””
His voice was almost gentle.
“Your family destroyed itself.””
I felt anger rise.
“You don’t know anything about my family.””
He smiled.
“I know more than you.””
He looked at the folder in my hand.
“That contains only half the truth.””
My grip tightened.
“What does that mean?””
“It means your father didn’t hide everything.””
Richard looked at him.
“Where is the other half?””
The man laughed.
“Still asking questions like your father.””
Richard moved forward.
“Answer me.””
The man’s expression changed.
“You really don’t remember.””
Richard froze.
Again.
That same sentence.
The same thing everyone kept saying.
He didn’t remember.
The man looked at him.
“You were there, Richard.””
Richard’s face tightened.
“I know.””
“You saw everything.””
“I was a child.””
“You were old enough.””
Richard looked away.
I watched him carefully.
Because now I understood.
Everyone had secrets.
Even the people who thought they were innocent.
The man raised his hand.
“Take the folder.””
Several men moved forward.
But before they reached us, Thomas threw a metal object across the floor.
A loud alarm exploded through the warehouse.
The lights flashed.
Smoke filled the room.
“Run!”” Thomas shouted.
Richard grabbed Noah.
I followed.
We moved through the back exit as footsteps chased us.
The cold night air hit my face.
For a moment, I thought we had escaped.
Then a voice called from behind.
“Elena.””
I stopped.
Not because I wanted to.
Because I knew that voice.
A voice I had only heard in dreams.
A voice I never believed I would hear again.
“Mom?””
Everything went silent.
A woman stood near the edge of the warehouse.
Older.
Tired.
But unmistakable.
My mother.
Isabella Marquez.
She looked at me with tears in her eyes.
For years, I had imagined this moment.
I imagined running toward her.
I imagined asking why she left.
I imagined being angry.
But when I finally saw her…
I couldn’t move.
“Isabella.””
The name escaped Richard’s lips.
He knew her.
My mother looked at him.
And sadness crossed her face.
“Richard.””
He looked shocked.
“You’re alive.””
She gave a small, painful smile.
“Yes.””
My voice shook.
“You knew her?””
Richard looked at me.
“I thought she was dead.””
My mother stepped closer.
“Everyone thought that.””
I stared at her.
“Why?””
The question carried twenty years of pain.
“Why did you leave me?””
Her face broke.
“I didn’t.””
The answer hurt more than anything.
“What?””
“I never left you, Elena.””
Tears filled her eyes.
“Your father took you away because he was trying to protect you.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“Yes.””
She stepped closer.
“When Daniel discovered what Harrington’s family was doing, he knew they would come after all of us.””
Richard looked down.
“My father…”
“Yes.””
My mother looked at him.
“Your father wanted Daniel gone.””
Richard closed his eyes.
“And you?””
She looked away.
“I tried to stop him.””
A cold silence followed.
“Then why did everyone tell me you died?””
My mother looked at Thomas.
Thomas answered.
“Because it was the only way to keep you alive.””
I looked at him.
“You knew?””
“Yes.””
“You all knew?””
Thomas looked guilty.
“I helped your father hide you.””
My breathing became uneven.
“You let me believe I was alone.””
“I let you survive.””
The words hurt.
But I understood them.
A little.
My mother reached toward me.
“I watched you from a distance.””
I stepped back.
“You watched me?””
“Yes.””
“While I grew up without you?””
Her eyes filled.
“I had no choice.””
“There is always a choice.””
The words came out harsher than I intended.
But I had spent twenty years missing someone who was alive.
She deserved to hear my pain.
“I had nightmares about you.””
Her face collapsed.
“I know.””
“You knew?””
“I saw you.””
My anger weakened.
“When?””
“Many times.””
She looked toward the ground.
“When you graduated.””
“When you moved away.””
“When you started working at Harrington’s house.””
I froze.
“You knew I was there?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t you come to me?””
Her answer was barely a whisper.
“Because someone was watching.””
The memory of Victoria flashed through my mind.
The old man.
The men chasing us.
Everyone connected.
My mother looked at me.
“You were never abandoned, Elena.””
A tear rolled down her face.
“You were protected.””
I wanted to believe her.
I wanted to run into her arms.
But twenty years of pain did not disappear in one moment.
Not even when the person you missed was standing in front of you.
Then Richard spoke.
“What about Daniel?””
My mother looked at him.
The sadness returned.
“He didn’t die because of the investigation.””
Everyone became quiet.
“Then why?””
She looked at me.
“Because he found out the worst part.””
My heart sank.
“What?””
She took a deep breath.
“He discovered that someone inside his own family had helped destroy him.””
Richard frowned.
“Someone inside Harrington?””
My mother nodded.
“Yes.””
“Who?””
She looked at him.
And then at me.
“Someone you both trusted.””
The silence was unbearable.
Richard’s face tightened.
“Tell us.””
My mother looked toward the road.
“It was not your father.””
Richard froze.
“What?””
“He wasn’t the one who betrayed Daniel.””
She looked at me.
“The person who gave Daniel’s location away…”
A pause.
“The person who helped arrange his death…”
My heart pounded.
“Who?””
My mother whispered:
“It was Margaret Harrington.””
Richard stepped back.
“No.””
His voice broke.
“My mother?””
My mother nodded.
“She was not trying to save Daniel.””
Everyone went silent.
“She was trying to save herself.””
Richard looked devastated.
The woman he had spent his life believing was kind.
The woman who had raised him.
The woman whose memory he protected.
Was the person behind everything.
Then my phone vibrated.
Everyone looked at it.
A new message.
Unknown number.
I opened it.
One sentence.
*Your mother is lying.*
Attached was a photo.
A photo taken moments earlier.
Of my mother standing with Thomas.
And behind them…
was Daniel Marquez.
May you like
Alive.
The date on the picture was yesterday.
