Chapter 1: The Fall Into Silence
“Get out of my sight right now!””
Victoria Harrington’s scream cut through the peaceful afternoon like broken glass.
I froze beside the garden pool, my hands shaking as I held the small, trembling body of six-year-old Noah Harrington against my chest. His expensive blue shirt was soaked through, his dark hair dripped water onto my uniform, and his frightened eyes clung to me as if I were the only safe thing left in the world.
“Hold on tight, sweetheart,” I whispered.
“I have got you. You’re safe now.””
But before Noah could even stop coughing, Victoria was already pointing at me.
Her perfectly manicured finger trembled with anger.
“You pushed him,” she said.
The entire garden went silent.
I looked at her in disbelief.
“What?””
“You heard me, Elena.”” Her voice became colder.
“You pushed my son into that pool.””
The words felt heavier than the accusation itself.
For three years, I had worked inside the Harrington estate. I had cleaned their rooms, prepared their meals, helped Noah with his homework, and stayed awake during countless nights when he was sick.
I knew every corner of that house.
I knew every family photograph hanging on the walls.
I knew every secret that people accidentally revealed when they thought servants were invisible.
But I never imagined that one day, I would stand beside their pool with a child in my arms while his mother accused me of trying to hurt him.
“Victoria, darling?””
A deep voice came from behind us.
Richard Harrington walked quickly across the stone pathway, his expression changing the moment he saw his son wrapped in my arms.
“What on earth happened out here?””
Victoria immediately rushed toward him, tears appearing in her eyes so quickly that anyone who did not know her would believe they were real.
“Richard, it was horrible,” she said.
“I came outside and saw Elena standing next to the pool. Noah was drowning.””
Richard’s face tightened.
His eyes moved from his son to me.
“What are you saying?””
Victoria stepped closer to him.
“That maid pushed your son into the deep end.””
My heart stopped.
“No,” I whispered.
Richard stared at me.
“Elena?””
“Sir, that is completely untrue.”” My voice shook, but I forced myself to continue.
“Noah slipped. I heard him fall, and I jumped in immediately. I saved him.””
Victoria laughed softly.
A cruel, quiet laugh.
“Of course you would say that.””
I looked at Noah.
He was still holding onto my sleeve.
“Tell them,” I said gently.
“Tell them what happened.””
Noah opened his mouth, but before he could speak, Victoria stepped between us.
“Noah is scared right now. He does not understand what happened.””
Something about the way she said it made my stomach turn.
She was not protecting her son.
She was controlling him.
Richard’s jaw tightened.
“Elena, why were you near the pool?””
“I was bringing Noah his towel. He asked me if he could play outside before dinner.””
Victoria crossed her arms.
“And somehow, while you were alone with him, he ended up underwater?””
“That is not what happened.””
“Then explain it.””
“I don’t have to explain something I didn’t do.””
The moment those words left my mouth, I realized my mistake.
Richard’s expression darkened.
In the Harrington house, servants were expected to apologize, not defend themselves.
Victoria noticed it too.
She stepped forward.
“Do you hear the attitude?”” she said.
“After what she did, she still speaks to us like this.””
I looked at Richard.
“Sir, please. You know me. You know I would never hurt Noah.””
For a brief second, something flickered in his eyes.
Doubt.
I saw it.
But then Victoria grabbed his arm.
“Richard, darling, you cannot seriously believe a maid over your own wife.””
The doubt disappeared.
His face became cold.
“Elena, hand Noah to me.””
I carefully passed the boy into his arms.
Noah immediately reached back toward me.
“Don’t go,” he whispered.
That small voice almost broke me.
“I’m right here,” I told him.
But Victoria pulled Noah closer.
“Stop pretending to care.””
I stared at her.
“What?””
“You heard me.””
Her eyes were no longer angry.
They were satisfied.
Like this was the moment she had been waiting for.
Richard turned away from me.
“Elena, you are fired from this house immediately.””
The garden seemed to spin.
I could barely hear the birds anymore.
The only sound was the rushing water inside the pool behind me.
“Sir…”
“Pack your things and leave.””
“Please,” I said.
“Just check what happened first.””
Victoria immediately interrupted.
“There is no need.””
“Yes, there is,” I replied.
She looked at me with disgust.
“We do not need to check any silly videos.””
I stared at her.
“Videos?””
For the first time, her expression changed.
Only for a second.
But I noticed.
The Harrington estate had cameras everywhere. Every hallway, every entrance, every corner of the garden.
Victoria knew that.
And she did not want Richard remembering.
“Richard,” I said quickly, “please check the CCTV cameras. The truth is right there.””
Victoria shook her head.
“Richard, darling, just throw her off our property.””
“Silence.””
The word surprised everyone.
Richard looked at his wife.
Then at me.
“Let me open the camera app on my phone.””
Victoria’s face became pale.
“Richard, this is unnecessary.””
“No.””
His voice was firm.
“For once, I want to see what actually happened.””
He pulled out his phone.
I held my breath.
Noah watched silently from his father’s arms.
The screen loaded.
A live connection appeared.
The garden camera.
The moment before the accident.
Everyone gathered around Richard.
Victoria stood unusually still.
I watched her carefully.
Because suddenly, I was no longer afraid.
I was waiting.
Richard touched the screen and moved the video back.
“Look at the screen and see the truth, sir,” I said quietly.
The recording began.
There I was, walking toward the pool with Noah’s towel.
There was Noah, laughing as he chased a small butterfly near the edge.
Then Victoria appeared.
My heart started pounding.
Richard leaned closer.
The video showed Victoria looking around.
Checking if anyone was watching.
Then she walked toward Noah.
“No…”
The sound came from Richard.
Victoria grabbed his arm.
“Richard, stop watching this.””
But he pulled away.
“No.””
His voice was different now.
The video continued.
Everyone saw Noah step backward.
Everyone saw Victoria’s hand move.
Everyone saw the exact moment that changed everything.
Richard’s face lost all color.
Victoria whispered, “I can explain.””
But he was no longer looking at her.
He was staring at the screen.
At the truth.
The recording showed something none of us expected.
Something that made Richard Harrington take a step back in horror.
Because the person who pushed Noah into the pool…
was not me.
Richard slowly turned toward Victoria.
His voice was barely recognizable.
“You absolute monster…”
Victoria’s lips parted.
“How could you do this to my son?””
And then the screen revealed one final detail.
A detail that made even me forget how to breathe.
Before pushing Noah, Victoria had been holding something in her hand.
May you like
A small envelope.
An envelope with my name written across the front.
