Chapter 5: The Mother I Was Told I Lost

I stared at the photograph on the warehouse floor.

For several seconds, I forgot how to breathe.

The world around me disappeared.

The voices.

The footsteps.

The fear.

Everything faded until there was only that image.

My father.

Richard Harrington.

And the woman standing between them.

A woman with my eyes.

My smile.

My mother.

The woman I had spent my entire life believing was gone.

“No…”

The word escaped my lips without permission.

Richard looked at me.

“Elena?””

I picked up the photograph with shaking hands.

The edges were worn, like someone had carried it for years.

Like it had been hidden.

Protected.

Waiting.

“That’s impossible.””

Thomas watched me carefully.

“You recognize her.””

I couldn’t answer.

Because I did.

Not from memories.

Not from moments I had shared with her.

But from the only picture I had of my childhood.

A faded photo my father kept inside his desk drawer.

A photo of a woman smiling beside a little girl.

Me.

“My mother died when I was a baby.””

Thomas said nothing.

Victoria looked away.

And that terrified me more than anything.

Because Victoria knew.

She knew the truth.

I turned toward her.

“You knew.””

Her expression remained cold.

“You were always asking the wrong questions.””

My hands tightened around the photograph.

“You knew my mother was alive?””

Richard looked at Victoria.

“What is she talking about?””

Victoria sighed.

“Richard, don’t.””

“No.””

His voice was sharp.

“Answer her.””

For once, Victoria looked uncomfortable.

“She wasn’t supposed to find out.””

My heart sank.

“What does that mean?””

Richard stepped closer.

“Victoria.””

She looked at him.

Then at me.

“Your mother left.””

The words hit me.

“No.””

“She did.””

“You’re lying.””

Victoria smiled sadly.

“You want me to be lying because the truth hurts more.””

I shook my head.

“My father said she died.””

“Your father said many things.””

I looked at Thomas.

“Is she alive?””

The warehouse became silent.

Thomas looked at me.

“Yes.””

One word.

One impossible word.

My knees almost gave out.

“Where is she?””

Thomas didn’t answer.

Richard stepped forward.

“Where is Elena’s mother?””

Thomas looked at him.

“Ask yourself why you never knew she existed.””

Richard’s face changed.

“What are you talking about?””

Thomas walked toward the table and placed his hand on the folder.

“Because the people who destroyed Daniel Marquez also destroyed Elena’s family.””

Victoria suddenly moved.

“Enough.””

Everyone looked at her.

She sounded angry.

But underneath it was panic.

“You don’t get to rewrite history.””

Thomas laughed.

“History?””

He opened the folder.

“No, Victoria.””

“This is what happened.””

Inside were dozens of documents.

Old papers.

Financial records.

Photographs.

Letters.

Evidence.

My father’s lost proof.

Thomas pulled out a document.

“Daniel discovered that money was being transferred from Harrington Industries into private accounts.””

Richard stared.

“That cannot be true.””

“Why?””

Thomas looked at him.

“Because you didn’t know?””

Richard said nothing.

The silence was his answer.

Thomas continued.

“Your father created a hidden financial network. When Daniel discovered it, he tried to expose it.””

Richard’s face became pale.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

The name hung between us.

The founder of Harrington Industries.

The man Richard had admired his entire life.

The man who built the company.

The man who taught him everything.

I looked at Richard.

“You didn’t know.””

He shook his head slowly.

“No.””

For the first time, I saw something break inside him.

His entire identity was built around believing his family was honorable.

Now everything was collapsing.

Victoria stepped forward.

“You’re letting a stranger manipulate you.””

Richard looked at her.

“A stranger?””

His voice was quiet.

“You knew.””

Victoria didn’t respond.

“You knew all of this.””

“I knew enough.””

The answer shocked everyone.

Richard stared at his wife.

“You knew my father was involved?””

Victoria crossed her arms.

“I knew your family was never as perfect as you believed.””

“And you married me anyway?””

A small smile appeared on her face.

“Richard, everyone marries for something.””

The cruelty of that sentence made the room colder.

Richard looked away.

I looked at Noah.

The little boy was standing near the wall, holding onto his father’s jacket.

He looked confused.

Scared.

I moved toward him.

“It’s okay.””

Noah reached for my hand.

“Are you leaving?””

The question broke something inside me.

“No.””

I squeezed his hand.

“I’m not leaving you.””

Victoria watched us.

And suddenly I understood.

This was never only about money.

It was about control.

She hated that Noah trusted me.

She hated that Richard trusted me.

She hated that the truth was something she could not control.

Thomas closed the folder.

“There is one more thing you need to know.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He pulled out another photograph.

This one was newer.

Much newer.

My hands froze before I even touched it.

Because I knew that face.

The woman standing outside a small apartment.

Older.

But alive.

My mother.

The photograph was dated three months earlier.

“She has been watching you,” Thomas said.

My voice barely worked.

“Why?””

“Because she was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

Thomas looked at Victoria.

Then Richard.

“She knows who really ordered Daniel’s disappearance.””

The room went silent.

Richard frowned.

“Disappearance?””

I looked at him.

“What do you mean?””

Thomas’s expression became serious.

“Your father did not die the way you were told.””

My entire body went cold.

“What?””

Thomas looked directly at me.

“Daniel Marquez did not have a heart attack.””

I stopped moving.

“He was murdered.””

The word echoed.

Murdered.

For years, I had lived with the pain of losing him.

But I had accepted the reason.

A natural death.

A tragedy.

Something cruel but unavoidable.

Now Thomas was telling me that someone chose it.

Someone planned it.

Someone took my father from me.

“Who?””

My voice shook.

“Who killed him?””

Thomas looked toward Victoria.

She immediately stepped back.

“No.””

Richard looked between them.

“Victoria?””

Thomas continued.

“The person who ordered Daniel’s death is someone you both know.””

Richard’s eyes narrowed.

“Who?””

Thomas reached into the folder again.

This time, he pulled out a letter.

A handwritten letter.

My father’s handwriting.

My breath caught.

“That’s impossible.””

Thomas handed it to me.

“He wrote this the night before he died.””

My fingers trembled as I opened it.

Only a few lines were written.

But they changed everything.

*Elena, if you are reading this, it means I failed to protect you.*

My eyes blurred.

*Trust no one in the Harrington family. Not even the person who claims to love you most.*

I stopped.

Because below those words was a name.

A name written with my father’s final warning.

A name that made Richard step back in horror.

A name that made Victoria lose the color in her face.

May you like

The name was:

*Richard Harrington.*
