Chapter 3: The Name I Was Forced to Hide

The paper slipped from my fingers.

For a moment, I could not understand the words in front of me.

*If you want your son back, ask Elena who she really is.*

The sentence seemed impossible.

Unreal.

Like someone had reached into the darkest corner of my life and dragged out a secret I had spent years burying.

Richard noticed my expression.

His eyes narrowed.

“Elena.””

I looked up slowly.

“Sir…”

“Who are you?””

The question I had feared for years had finally arrived.

Not from a stranger.

Not from an enemy.

From the man whose home I had worked in.

The man whose child I had protected.

I opened my mouth, but no words came out.

Richard stepped closer.

“Someone just took my son and left a message with your name on it.””

His voice was controlled, but I could hear the anger underneath.

“I need answers.””

I looked down at the paper.

“I never wanted this.””

“That is not an answer.””

“I know.””

The silence between us felt heavier than the accusation from Victoria.

Because this time, I could not simply say I was innocent.

There was something I had hidden.

Something I had never told anyone in the Harrington house.

A past I thought was gone forever.

“I’m not who you think I am,” I whispered.

Richard’s face hardened.

“Then tell me who you are.””

Before I could answer, the back door of the mansion opened.

Victoria rushed outside.

Her makeup was slightly ruined, but her eyes were dry.

Too dry.

A mother whose child had disappeared should have looked broken.

Terrified.

Desperate.

But Victoria looked like someone who had lost control of a plan.

“Richard.””

He turned toward her.

“Where is Noah?””

Her lips parted.

“I don’t know.””

“You don’t know?””

“I was upstairs looking for him.””

Richard laughed once.

A cold, empty sound.

“You expect me to believe that?””

Victoria looked at me.

Then at the paper in Richard’s hand.

Her face changed.

“You found it.””

Richard stared at her.

“You know about this?””

“No.””

Her answer came too quickly.

Richard noticed.

So did I.

“You’re lying.””

Victoria stepped closer.

“Richard, you need to listen to me. Elena is dangerous.””

I felt anger rise inside me.

“Still?””

She ignored me.

“You have no idea who she really is.””

Richard looked between us.

“Then tell me.””

Victoria hesitated.

That hesitation said more than words ever could.

“Her real name isn’t Elena.””

My heartbeat stopped.

Richard looked at me.

I stayed silent.

Because I knew it was time.

The truth had found me.

“My name is Elena Marquez,” I said quietly.

Victoria smiled.

Like she had won.

“There it is.””

Richard frowned.

“What does that mean?””

I looked at him.

“My father was Daniel Marquez.””

The name seemed to hit him.

Richard’s expression changed instantly.

“Daniel Marquez?””

I nodded.

“You knew him.””

The garden became silent again.

Victoria crossed her arms.

“Tell him the rest.””

I looked away.

Because the rest was the part I hated.

The part that explained everything.

“Twenty years ago, my father was the financial director of Harrington Industries.””

Richard’s face became distant.

“He was accused of stealing money.””

“Yes.””

My voice became quieter.

“He lost everything.””

Victoria watched me carefully.

“And your family blamed Richard.””

I looked at her.

“My family lost our home. My father lost his reputation. He spent years trying to prove he was innocent.””

Richard shook his head.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“You remember.””

His eyes moved away.

“I remember the investigation.””

“But not what happened afterward.””

Richard said nothing.

“My father died believing nobody cared about the truth.””

A painful silence followed.

Victoria stepped forward.

“Because your father was guilty.””

I looked at her.

“You still believe that?””

“Yes.””

Her answer was immediate.

“Because he was.””

“No.””

My voice surprised even me.

“No, he wasn’t.””

Richard stared at me.

“You’re saying my company destroyed your family based on a lie?””

I nodded.

“I spent years trying to find proof.””

Victoria laughed.

“And you came here as a maid?””

I looked at her.

“Yes.””

Richard’s eyes darkened.

“Why?””

I took a deep breath.

“Because the only people who knew what happened were inside this house.””

The truth finally came out.

I had not entered the Harrington estate because I wanted revenge.

I had entered because I wanted answers.

Three years ago, I found documents showing that someone inside the company had framed my father.

The trail led back here.

To the Harrington family.

But I never expected Noah.

I never expected a little boy who would ask me to read him bedtime stories, who would hide cookies in his backpack for me, who would call me his second mother.

I never expected to love the family I came to investigate.

Richard looked at me.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I didn’t know if you were involved.””

His face changed.

The words hurt him.

But he knew they were fair.

Victoria, however, looked almost satisfied.

“See?””

She pointed at me.

“She lied to us for years.””

Richard turned toward her.

“You lied too.””

Victoria froze.

The accusation landed.

Hard.

But before anyone could say more, Richard’s phone rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone stopped.

He answered immediately.

“Who is this?””

A distorted voice came through.

A man.

Calm.

Almost amused.

“Richard Harrington.””

Richard’s hand tightened around the phone.

“Where is my son?””

“You are asking the wrong question.””

“Who are you?””

A soft laugh.

“Someone who remembers what your family did.””

Richard looked at me.

Then at Victoria.

The voice continued.

“Twenty years ago, Daniel Marquez was destroyed because someone needed a victim.””

Richard’s expression changed.

The caller knew.

“Bring Elena to the old Harrington warehouse.””

My blood ran cold.

Richard said nothing.

The voice continued.

“Come alone.””

“No.””

The man laughed.

“You have always been a man who thinks money can fix everything.””

A pause.

“But some things cannot be bought back.””

Richard’s voice became dangerous.

“If you touch my son—”

“You should worry less about what I will do to Noah.””

Silence.

Then the caller spoke again.

“And worry more about what Elena will discover when she opens the file waiting for her.””

The call ended.

Richard immediately tried calling back.

Nothing.

The number disappeared.

Victoria looked frightened.

For the first time, truly frightened.

Richard turned to me.

“You know that warehouse?””

I nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

I swallowed.

“Because that is where my father worked before everything happened.””

Richard stared at me.

Then he looked toward the road.

“We’re going.””

Victoria stepped forward.

“Richard, no.””

He turned.

“You’re not coming.””

Her eyes widened.

“What?””

“You heard me.””

“But Noah is my son.””

Richard’s expression was cold.

“And right now, I don’t know who I can trust.””

Victoria looked at me.

Her hatred was obvious.

But underneath it was something else.

Fear.

As Richard walked toward the garage, I followed.

But before I reached the door, my phone vibrated.

I had not received a message on it all day.

The screen lit up.

One message.

From an unknown number.

My hands went numb.

Because there was a photo attached.

A photo of Noah.

Alive.

Sitting in a dark room.

And beside him was a folder.

The same folder my father had spent his entire life trying to find.

May you like

The message below contained only six words.

*You were never supposed to find him.*
