Chapter 6: The Letter That Changed Everything
The name on the page stared back at me.
*Richard Harrington.*
My fingers went numb.
The paper slipped slightly in my hand, but I refused to let it fall.
Not because I believed it.
Because I needed to understand.
The man standing in front of me had saved his son.
The man who had trusted me enough to bring me here.
The man who had looked at Victoria with the same shock I felt.
Could he really be the person who destroyed my family?
“Richard…”
My voice barely came out.
Everyone looked at him.
Even Noah.
The little boy who had spent the entire day holding onto his father now looked up with confusion.
Richard stared at the letter.
His face had lost all emotion.
“That is not possible.””
Thomas crossed his arms.
“Your reaction says otherwise.””
Richard looked at him sharply.
“You expect me to believe a letter written by a dead man?””
“No.””
Thomas stepped closer.
“I expect you to remember.””
Richard’s jaw tightened.
“I remember my father.””
“No.””
Thomas shook his head.
“You remember the version of him you were allowed to know.””
The warehouse became silent.
Victoria suddenly moved toward the folder.
“That letter is fake.””
I turned toward her.
“You knew about it.””
Her eyes narrowed.
“I knew your father was obsessed with blaming everyone else.””
“You knew about the letter.””
She didn’t answer.
That was enough.
Richard noticed too.
“Victoria.””
Her expression changed.
“What?””
“You knew this existed?””
She looked away.
“I heard rumors.””
“Rumors?””
His voice became colder.
“You have been hiding things from me for years.””
Victoria laughed softly.
“Now you’re angry because someone lied?””
The bitterness in her voice surprised me.
“You lied to me too.””
Richard stared at her.
The pain on his face was obvious.
Not anger.
Betrayal.
Thomas watched them.
“This is what happens when people build their lives on secrets.””
I looked back at the letter.
My father’s handwriting.
His final words.
A warning.
But warnings could be wrong.
Couldn’t they?
I looked at Richard.
“Did you know my father?””
He was quiet.
Then he answered.
“Yes.””
My heart tightened.
“How?””
Richard looked at the floor.
“He worked for my company.””
“You said you only knew about the investigation.””
“I was twenty-eight.””
His voice was low.
“My father controlled everything. He made decisions without telling anyone.””
“Did you hate him?””
Richard looked at me.
The question surprised him.
“Yes.””
The answer came immediately.
Not because of my father.
Because of his own.
“I hated how he treated people.””
Thomas nodded.
“Then you know exactly what he was capable of.””
Richard looked at him.
“But I didn’t know about the theft.””
Thomas’s eyes narrowed.
“Didn’t you?””
The accusation landed.
Richard looked angry.
But then something happened.
Something unexpected.
He looked uncertain.
Like a memory had just returned.
“My father had a private office.””
Nobody spoke.
Richard continued.
“After Daniel disappeared, I found documents there.””
My breathing stopped.
“What documents?””
Richard looked at the folder.
“I don’t know.””
“You don’t know?””
“I was young. I was scared.””
He ran a hand through his hair.
“My father told me never to ask questions.””
Thomas gave a bitter smile.
“And you listened.””
Richard looked at him.
“Yes.””
The honesty surprised me.
For the first time, I realized something.
Richard was not defending himself.
He was trying to understand his own past.
But then Victoria spoke.
“Richard.””
Everyone turned.
Her voice was softer now.
Almost gentle.
That scared me more.
“You need to think carefully.””
Richard looked at her.
“About what?””
“About who benefits from you believing this.””
She pointed at me.
“Elena came into your house with a fake identity.””
I stayed silent.
Because it was true.
I had lied.
Even if my reasons were different.
Victoria continued.
“She has been searching for revenge.””
“No.””
Richard’s response was immediate.
Victoria looked surprised.
“You believe her?””
Richard looked at me.
“I believe Noah.””
The words stopped her.
“He trusted her.””
Victoria’s face hardened.
“You’re choosing a maid over your wife?””
Richard stared at her.
“I’m choosing the person who saved my son.””
Noah quietly moved closer to me.
Victoria noticed.
And something in her expression changed.
Not sadness.
Resentment.
A deep, ugly resentment.
“You have no idea what she is.””
I looked at Victoria.
“And you do?””
Her silence answered.
Before anyone could say more, a loud crash came from outside.
Everyone turned.
Thomas immediately moved toward the door.
“What was that?””
Another sound.
Metal hitting concrete.
Richard grabbed Noah.
“Stay behind me.””
The warehouse lights flickered.
Then went out.
Again.
But this time, nobody moved.
Because everyone knew someone else was here.
A voice came from the darkness.
“You should have left the past buried.””
Richard froze.
“Who are you?””
No answer.
Only footsteps.
Slow.
Confident.
The person walked closer.
Then the emergency lights turned on.
A man stood near the entrance.
Older.
Gray hair.
Expensive suit.
Someone who looked like he belonged in a boardroom, not an abandoned warehouse.
Richard’s face changed.
“Father…”
I felt the entire world stop.
The man smiled.
“Hello, Richard.””
Noah buried his face against his father.
I stared at the man.
Because I knew that face.
Not personally.
But from company photographs.
The founder of Harrington Industries.
The man everyone believed had died ten years ago.
“Your father is dead,” Richard whispered.
The man smiled.
“That is what everyone was told.””
Thomas stepped forward.
“You should have stayed hidden.””
The older man looked at him.
“You should have stayed quiet.””
Richard held Noah closer.
“What is going on?””
The man looked at me.
Then at the letter in my hand.
“So Daniel finally found a way to speak.””
My blood ran cold.
“You knew my father.””
He smiled.
“Of course I did.””
“Did you kill him?””
The room became silent.
The man looked almost amused.
“You sound just like him.””
I stepped forward.
“Answer me.””
Richard looked at his father.
“Did you?””
For the first time, the old man’s smile disappeared.
“Your father was a fool.””
That was not an answer.
But it was enough.
Richard’s face changed.
“You did.””
The man sighed.
“Daniel was given a choice.””
My hands shook.
“What choice?””
“He could protect his family…”
A pause.
“Or he could expose the truth.””
I felt tears forming.
“What did you do?””
The man looked at me.
“What had to be done.””
Richard’s voice became furious.
“You killed him.””
The man ignored him.
Instead, he looked at Victoria.
“You failed.””
Everyone turned.
Victoria’s face went pale.
“What?””
“You were supposed to remove Elena from this house.””
My heart stopped.
Richard looked at his wife.
The realization hit him.
“You were working for him.””
Victoria said nothing.
The man continued.
“You had one simple task.””
He looked at me.
“Make sure she never discovered who she really was.””
I stared at Victoria.
The woman who had accused me.
The woman who had tried to destroy me.
The woman who had been in my home for years.
She wasn’t just hiding the truth.
She was protecting it.
Richard’s voice was barely a whisper.
“Victoria…”
She looked at him.
And for the first time, there were tears in her eyes.
But I could not tell if they were regret.
Or fear.
The old man stepped forward.
“You all want answers?””
He smiled.
“Fine.””
He pointed at me.
“Ask Elena why her mother disappeared.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
The man looked directly into my eyes.
“Because your mother didn’t leave your father.””
A pause.
“She left because she discovered what Daniel had done.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
He smiled.
“The truth you have been searching for your entire life…”
He looked at the letter.
“…is that your father was not the victim you believed.””
Then he reached into his coat and pulled out a small envelope.
An envelope with my name on it.
“This was found with your mother’s belongings.””
My blood turned cold.
Because the handwriting on the front was familiar.
It was my father’s.
May you like
And underneath my name were four words.
*Do not trust Elena.*
